CALCULATING MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE L. JOHN- sroN, a citizen of the United States and a resident of Oakland, Alameda County, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calculating Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to calculatingl machines in which the figure discs of the registering mechanism are arranged on a carriage, which is disposed in parallel displaceable relation to the actuating mechanism, for the purpose of making the direct action of the units of the actuating mechanism on figure discs of different denomination possible. For this purpose the carriage is movable longitudinally in a step by step motion and the present invention relates to means for moving the carriage in a step by Step motion in either direction.
An object of the invention is to provide a carriage moving mechanism which is positive and practically noiseless in operation and simple in construction.
The invention possesses other advantagenus features, some of which, with the oregoing, will be set forth at length'inthe followin description, where I shall outline in full t at form of the invention which I have selected for illustration in the drawings accompanying and forming part of the present specification. In said-drawings, I have shown one form of the invention, but it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to such form since the invention, as set forth in the claims, may be embodied in a lurality of forms.

The calculating machine shown in the drawings, and which is one type of machine to which my invention is applicable, comprises ,a frame having side walls 2 .between which the actuating mechanism is mounted and a base 3, projectin forward from the side walls and on whici the 'carriage 4 is mounted in longitudinal displaceable relation, so that the figure wheels 5 of the registering mechanism ma be moved in cooperative relation with di erent units of the actuating 'or counting mechanism. The carria'ge is movable in a step by step movement, the length of each step being equal to the spacing of corresponding parts of the iig- -ure discs, so that the figure discs are moved at each step to bring the discs of the next denomination into cooperative relation with the respective actuating units.
Secured to the carriage 4, and projecting therefroimat the base, is a serrated bar 6, havin a series of re ularly spaced depressions mits upper sur ace, the spacing of the depressions being equivalent to the len h of the step movement of the carriage. T e depressions are preferabl rectangular and contiguous, so t at they orm a series of rectan ular serrations 7.` Secured to the front of t e base of the machine, usually at the center, is. a housing 8, which is disposed above the toothed bar 6.' Arranged within the housing are -two o positely disposed guide blocks 9--12, the b ocks being pivoted on pins 13 secured in the housing. The bloc are spaced apart at their adjacent pivoted ends and are normally held in a orizontal position by the springs 14 connectin the blocks with the housing. Disposed 1n the pivoted blocks are slides 15--16 which are guided on the pivot ins 13 and which are provided with rounde lower ends adapted to enter the depressions in the bar 6. The slides are alined with depressions in the toothed bar, so that when a slide is rejected it engages in a depression in the ar. Pivotally engaging the slides 15-16 are levers 18-19 pivoted in the respective blocks and provided on their ends with keys 21H22. The keys are normally held raised by springs 23, interposed between the lever and the housing. The springs 23 are weaker than the springs 14, so that when a key is depressed it operates to iirst move the slide into a depression in the toothed bar before the guide block is rocked on its pivot. When the slide has seated in the depression, further movement of the key causes the' guide block to rock on its pivot, causin the slide to move the carriage. For eXamp. e, depression of key 22 moves slide 16 into engagement with the rack, and then rocks the slide about the pivot of the block 12, moving the carriage one step to the right. When the key is released, the slide moves out of the depression and slides back into4 the block, which returns to its normal position with the *slide in position to be moved into engagement with the next depression. Similarly, depression of the key 2l causes the carriage to be moved one step to the left, When the carriage has been moved a distance of one step, motion of the rocking block is halted and with the key depressed the slide is jammed in the depression in the rack bar, locking said bar against movement in either direction. The carriage is thus positively moved in a step by step movement and overthrowing of the carriage is prevented. Means are also provided for accurately centering the carriage in displaced position and 4for preventingr accidental movement of the carriageduring the time that the slide is out of `engagement with 'the toothed bari Arranged inthe rear Wall of the housing, immediately over the toothed bar, is a spring pressed detent engaging the toothed bar preferably comprising a ball 27 ressed downward by a spring 28. The ba seats in a depression and as the carriage is moved, the ball is raised and then springs into the next depression, properly positioning the carriage. y
The sprlngs 23 for 'raising the keys may be dispensedl with, when' desired, and the springs '14 relied on to return the slides 15-16 and the keysto normal position. The springs 14 return the blocks to normal position and, in the movement of the block to such position,'the slide is forced upward by the inclined side of the depression in the serrated bar.
I claim:
1. In a calculating machine, 'a frame, a carriage movable on said frame, a toothed bar on said carriage and a slide pivotally mounted on said'frame adapted to be moved into contact with said bar and to be moved about its pivot to move said carriage.
2. In a calculating machine,.a frame, a carriage movable on said frame, a toothed bar on said carriage, a slide adapted to be moved into engagement with said bar,` a pivote` l 'ziember in which said slide is movable and means for moving said slide into engagement with the bar and movin said member about its pivot to move sai cal'- riage.
