HENRY LEVINE, OF PHILADELPIEIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BOX.
Application filed August 17, 1921. Serial No. 492,929.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, lilnnnx LEVINE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Boxes, which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to boxes, particularly those made of pasteboard or other like more or less flexible material.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a box consisting of a single integral sheet of material, such as pasteboard, having means whereby difierent parts thereof may be more securely interlocked or locked together than heretofore has been the case.
A still further object of the invention is to simplify and cheapen the construction of boxes of this character.
To these and other ends the invention coniprehends the construction as hereinafter described in detail and particularly pointed out in the claims and as shown in the ac coinpanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan viev: of a blank cutand shaped so that when folded it is adapted to produce a box embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a box formed from the blank shown in 1, but so with the cover flaps in open position;
Fig. 3 is a central transverse sectional View showing the cover flaps in process of being closed and interlocked;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the box enibodying my invention with the cover flaps in closed interlocked position; and
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional View taken on the line 55 of Fig. 4:.
Referring to the drawing: l designates, as a whole, a blank which is marked or creased along the dotted lines 1, 2, 8, 4c, 5, 6, 7 and 8. It is along these lines that the blank is folded in the formation of the box, as shown in the subsequent figures of the drawing. The portions 10 and 11 constitute the sides of the box, while the portions 12 and 13 constitute the ends thereof. Each of the sides 10 and 11 of the box is provided with narrow slots or slits 14: near opposite ends thereof.
Each of the ends 12 and 13 is provided with tapered extensions 15 at its opposite ends, which extensions are provided at their ends with lateral extending projections 16 forming ears. In forming the box, the sides 10 and 11 are first turned upwardly into position, substantially at right angles to the portion 17 of the blank which constitutes the bottom of the finished boxstructure. Thereafter the ends 12and 13 are turned upwardly and the extensions 15 thereof are folded over the ends of the sides 10 and 11 and the T- shaped outer ends of he said extension 15 are inserted through theslots or slits 14.. In order to facilitate the insertionof the outer T-shaped ends of the extension through the said slots or slits 14L, the projections 01 ears 16 are folded inv ardly along the dotted lines 20. After they have been inserted, as described, the lateral projections or ears 16 are straightened out into the positions shown in Figs. 4 and 5, so that thereby the ends of the box structure are securely interlocked with and fastened to the opposite ends of the sides 10 and 11 of the box structure.
After the sides and ends have been thus secured together, the box may be then closed by means of the extensions 25 and 26 from the outer edges of the sides 10 and 11. Opposite end portions of the outer edge of the extension 25 extend inwardly from points adjacent the outer ends thereof, as indicated at 27, and within the angle between the edges of said portions a tongue-like projection 28 is provided, having laterally projecting or extending ears 29 which are adapted to be folded inwardly along the dotted lines 31, so as to overlap each other, as indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The extension 25 is provided with a slit 32, the central intermediate portion of which extends in parallel relation to the top edge of the side 10. At
its opposite ends, the slit is provided with outwardly inclined extensions 33, so as to provide a short tongue-like portion.
The extension 26 is provided with a narrow slot 35 through which the tongue-like extension 28 is adapted to be inserted. During the insertion of the tongue-like extension 28 through the said slit, the ears 29 are folded inwardly, so as to overlap each other in the manner indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The said tongue with the lateral projections 29 in folded, overlapped posi-.
tion with respect to each other is shown in Fig. 3 partially inserted through the slot 35. After the tongue-like extension 28 has been inserted through the slot 85, the lateral projections or ears 29 are straightened or flattened out, as indicated in Fig. 4 of the drawing, and are inserted through the slots 38 which are situated inwardly of and a short distance from the opposite ends of the slot 35. These slots 88 extend transversely of the extension 26 and also transversely and in a direction transverse of the length of the adjacent side 11,. For the purpose of facilitating the insertion of the projections or cars 29 into the said slits, the lower ends thereof are provided with angular extensions 39. After the tongue-like extension 28 has been inserted through the slot 85 and the projections or ears 29 flattened out, as indicated in Fig. 4, the cover flaps 25 and 26 occupy horizontal positions; that is, positions substantially parallel with the bottom 17, of the box. In order to protect the outer edge of the top flap 26, it is provided with a relatively narrow tongue or extension to whichis adapted to be inserted through the slit 32, previously referred to and which is provided within the extension 25 near the line of connection between the latter and the top edge ofthe side 10 oi the box structure.
I have also provided extensions 41 at the outer edges of the end of the box structure, which extensions are adapted to be folded inwardly in the completed box structure, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5 of the drawing. These extensions not only strengthen the ends of the box structure, but they also cooperate with the opposite ends or the cover flaps 25 and 26 to form a more complete clo sure for the box.
It will be seen that I have provided a box structure in which the sides and ends and the cover flaps thereoi are adapted to be interlocked in such manner that they can not accidentally become disengaged from eachother.
It will also be seen that by my invention, I am enabled to produce a box of unusual strength and neatncss. v
Althoughl have shown my invention as embodied in but a single form of construe tion, it will be understood that it is; susceptible oat embodiment in other forms and thatchanges in the details or the construction may be. made within the scope of the claims without departing from the said in vcntion.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: l
l. A box consisting of a single integral blank of flexible material having bottom, side, end portions and a co vercomprising two flap portions, the said side and end portions adapted to be bent into positions substantially at right angles to the said bottom diagonally extending opei portion and means for securing the said Y the atongue-like extension having laterally ex tending rojections thereon and the other of said cover port-ions being provided with narrow opening therein which extends in parallel relation to the edge ot' the side to which said portion is connected and other ngs spaced "from the opposite ends or said opening and the saidtongue-lilie extension ther Y i the lateral projections thereon being soil to extend from the underside of the st other cover portion through the said narrow open ing and the said lateral projecti us on said tongue adapted to engage said diagonal openings, substantially as described.
2. A box consisting of a'single int al blank of flexible material having bo om, side, end portions and a cover comprising two flap portions, the said side and nd por tions adapted to be bent into positions substantially at right angles to the said bottom portion and each of the end portions being provided at their opposite ends with tapered extensions which terminate in Tshaped heads and each of the side portions being provided near their opposite ends with narrow transversely extending openings through which the said T-shaped heads extend, whereby the said extensions are interlocked with the side portions of the b x structure and one oi the said cover portions: being provided with a slit intermediate its opposite edges and a tongue-l re extension having laterally extending projections thereon, and the other otsaid cover portions bein provided with a narrow opening therein 1 i 11 opening extends in parallel relation to the. edge of the side to which said portion is connocted and other diagonally extending openingspaced from the opposite ends of said opening and the said tongue-like extension together with the lateral projections thereon being adapted to extend from the underside of said flap throu the said narrow op ng and the said lateral projections adapted t6 engage said diagonal openings and the said other cover portion having a tongue expansion which is adapted to engage the said slit in the first named cov portion, substantially as described.
lntestimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, 1 have hereunto'subscribed my name this 13th day or" August, 1921.
