Description

J. YORKS Nov. 27 1923 TANK VALVE Filed April 13 1921 lullen/60T: JTM/i105 Y-ras. @his Patented Nov. 27, 1923.
UNITED STATES JULIUS YORKS, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
TANK VALVE.
Application led April 13, 1921. Serial No. 461,116.
To ult wlw/m, t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JULIUs Yomis, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tank Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tank valves and has for its object to provide a simple, durable and efficient valve, particularly adapted to be used in connection with flush tanks to control the passage of water therefrom.
The invention particularly contemplates a novel method of guiding and steadying the movable member' of the valve to the end that said member will seat more readily and more tightly, with the result that there will be less tendency for the valve to leak.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the claims thereof.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is .a vertical, longitudinal section partly in elevation of my improved tank valve.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings, 5 represents a portion of the bottom of a flush tank of the usual construction for domestic use in which a bushing 6 is inserted through an opening 7 and securely fastened by a clamp nut 8 in the usual well known manner. Formed integral with the bushing 6 at the upper end thereof is an annular valve seat 9 against which a movable valve member 10 is adapted to seat and thereby prevent the passage of water from the tank 5 into the bushing 6 between said valve seat 9 and the lower extremity of jthe movable valve member 10.
"apThe movable valve member 10 embodies therein a tube 11 having a flange 12 formed integral therewith at the lower end thereof, a bushing 13 having screw-threaded engage ment with the interior of the tube 11 at the lower end thereof and Va leather washer 14 which is clamped against the under surface of the flange 12 by the bushing 13. When the movable valve member 10 is seated upon the valve seat 9, thereby preventing the discharge of water from the tank 5 into the bushing 6 between the valve seat 9 and the lower extremity of the movable valve member 10, the tube 11 constitutes an overflow discharge for said water if the same rises to the level of the top of said tube, at which time the water passes into the opening 15 at the top of said tube and thence passes downwardly through said tube and into and through the bushing 6.
The movable valve member 10 is guided as it is raised and lowered by a rod 16 which is rigidly secured at its lower end in a cross member 17 formed integral with the bushing 6' and located below the valve seat 9. The rod 16 passes through a cross member 18 formed integral with the bushing 13 and the lower end of the movable valve member 10.is guided and positioned thereby. The upper portion of the rod 16 is screwthreaded at 19 to receive a spider 20 which has a plurality of radially projectingarms 21, the outer extremities of which arc located adjacent tothe inner surface of the tube 11, therebeing just enough clearance therebetween to allow the tube to move up and down freely and at the same time be guided and prevented from tipping thereby.
A spring 22 surrounds the rod 16 between the cross member 18 and the spider 20 and the tension of said spring is regulated by adjusting the position of said spider upon said rod. The spring 16 will positively seat the movable valve member 10 upon the valve seat 9 and furthermore the pressure of said spring being exerted upon said movable valve member at a point adjacent to the lowest extremity of said valve member and upon the median longitudinal line thereof will also tend to increase the stability of said movable valve member and thereby prevent leakage thereunder.V
A suitable hanger 23 is fastened to the upper end of the tube 11 and any of the well known devices in common use may be con neeted thereto in order that the valve may be operated when it is desired to release the water stored within the tank.
`The operation of my improved tank valve is as follows When it is desired to release the water contained within the tank 5 the movable valve member 10 is raised through suitable mechanism not shown which is connected to the hanger 23 thereby lifting said movable valve member away from the valve lliy seat 5) against the tension of the spring 22. The pressure ot the spring 22 is Vapplied at the Center ot' the very lowest extremity of the movable valve member l0, thereby eliminating a tendency commoninmostvalves to cause the movable valve member' to tip. The movable valve member l0 is guided at all times by the rod 16 and the arms 21 or' the spider 20 which ismounted upon said rod. Then the movable valve member l() is raised7 the Water Within the tank esca-pes thereunder and passes downwardly through the interior of the bushing 7. If the level of the Water Within the tank reaches to the top of the tube ll, it overflowsthrough the interior of said tube.
I ela-im:
l. A tank valve having, in combination, a bushing embodying therein an annularvalve seat, a movable valve member adapted to rest upon said annular valve seat, a rod rigidly secured to said bushing andextendingV upwardly through said movable valve member adapted to guide said movable valve member at the lower end thereof, a spider adjustably mounted upon said rod and adapted to guide said movable valve member adjacent to the upper end thereof and a spring surrounding said rod adapted to positively seat said movable valve member upon said annular valve seat.
2. A tank valve having, in Combination, a bushing embodying therein an an'nular'valve seat, a' movable valve member adapted to rest upon said annular valve seat, a rod rigidly secured to said. bushing and extending upv wardly through saidv movable valve member upon the longitudinal median line thereof' adapted to guide said movable valve member at the lower end thereof, a spider adjustably mounted upon said rod and adapted to guide said movable valve member adjacent tothe upper end thereof and a spring surrounding said rod and bearing against said spider adapted to positively seat said movable valve member upon said annular valve seat, the tension of said spring being regulated by said spider.
3. A tank valve having, in combination, a bushing embodying therein an annular' valve seat, a movable valvemember adapted to rest upon said annular valve seat and embodying therein a tube provided with a flan-ge formed integral therewith at the lowerend thereof and a Washer secured against the under surtace of said flange, a rod rigidly secured to said bushing and extending upwardly through said movable valve member upon the longitudinal median line thereofl adapted to guide said movable valve member at the lower end thereof, a spider adjustably mounted upon said'rod and Vadapted to guidev said movable valve member adj aeent to the upper end thereof and a spring surrounding said rod and bearing against said spider adapted to positively seat said movable valve member upon said annular valve seat, the tension of said spring being regulated by said spider. l
In testimony whereof IV have hereunto set my hand in presenee'of twosubseribing Wit-V nesses.
