To mii whom t amy concern:
Be it hewn 'that I, Roanne. R. RUST, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York city, Queens County, New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Manhole Covers, of which the following is a speciflcation, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in whichhig. 1 is plan of my improved cover; Fi
1e 2 is an eniarged central section thereo `Fig. 2i5 is a detail showing the meeting faces of the inner cover and seat therefor; Fig. 3 is a section on lines 3-3 of Fi 2; Fig. t is a plan of a modied form o m inven-l tion; Fi 5 is an enlarged centra section thereof; ig. 6 is a section on lines 6-6 of Fig. e; Fig. 'Z'A is detail showing a socket 12 with the end of the lock-bar in position therein; and. F ig. 8 is a detail showing a modification of the meeting faces lof manhole and cover.
My invention relates to manhole covers and consists in the construction of a manhole and of a cover which is designed to tit tightly and accurately in thev manhole to prevent the entrance of dirt and moisture thereinto, and also prevent tampering with wires, pipes and tubes where the manhole 'ves access to conduits, tunnels, etc. My
se Invention also consists 1n the construction and arrangement, of parts which I shall hereinafterdescribe and claim.
Referring to the drawings, 2 indicates the manhole frame, 3 the exterior cover and 4 as the seat therefor.
The inner cover 5 has its periphery 6 preferably tapered at an angle of approximately 2 from the rpendicular, while the seat 7 on the ma ole is preferably at an angle o of 2} from the perpendicular. The tapered surfaces 6 and 7 are preferably machined in order that true meeting surfaces may be obtained and a tight joint insured.
In Figs. 1, 2, 3, I have shown the cover 5 secured m position by means of a lock-bar 8. The end 9 of the lock-bar is inserted in a socket 10 of the frame, and the reduced end 11 is droaped into the socket 12 yon the opposite si e of the frame. The end of the saddle plate 13 is inserted beneath the lugs of the socket 12 and forced down into ition on top of the bar 8, with the stap e le extending through the slot 15, in which position it may be secured hy a padlock ln Figs. 5, 6, 7, the lock-bar 8' is inserted f into the sockets 10' and 12 from the side., and is secured in this position by passing the staple 1t through the slot 16 in the lug 17 on the cover.
In Fig. 8 l have shown a modification of the meeting faces of manhole and cover in which the meetingy facet of the cover is machined at an angle of 295, while the face 7% ci' the manhole is machined at an angle o 2.
The inner cover is equipped with lifting rings 18, to permit its easy removal.
By reason of the differential tapers between the meeting surfaces of the seat and cover, a line contact therebetween is obtained and a tight joint thereby secured. The lock-bar assists in causing the cover to settle firmly in its seat, and when'it is in position and locked it holds the cover in place and prevents its removal without unlocking the bar.
The terms and expressions which I have employed areV used as terms of description and not of limitation, and -I have no intention, in the use of such terms and expressions, of excluding an mechanical equivalents of the features s own and described, or portions thereof, but recognize that various structural modifications are possible within the scope of the invention claimed.
What I claim is:
1. The combination of a manhole and a cover having cone-shaped metal meetin surfaces, the said surfaces being tapete the taper of one of said surfaces being at a greater angle from the perpendicular than the taper on the other of said surfaces to insure a tight metal-to-metal .joint therebetween.
2. The combination of a manhole and a cover therefor having cone-shaped metal meeting surfaces, the least diameter of the said manhole surface being less than the least diameter of the cover, the said meeting surfaces bein tapered, but the taper of the di'erent angles, the angle of one of said manhole surace being at a greater angle surfaces from the perpendicular being 10 5- from the perpendicular than vthe cover surgreater than that of the other of said surface `so as to provide a tight metal to metal faces to provide a line Contact therebetween,
I 5 joint between manhole midfnover.V and means for securing the cover in posi- 3. The combination, of a manhole and e tion upon the said manhole surface. cover having eonegshaped metal meeting Surfaces, the said surfaces being arranged at ROBERT R. RUST.
