Patented Nov. 20, 1923.
wales PATENT OFFEE GEORGE CURRAN, F PLYMQUTH, PENNSYLVANIA.
AUTOMOBILE LIGHT AND LICENSE HOLDER.
Application filed April 4,
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE CURRAN, of Plymouth, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automobile Lights and License Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to automobile lights and has for its object the provision of a lamp which will contain means for holding the chaufleurs license in such a position that it may be easily examined at any time without being withdrawn from the holder, thereby enabling the operator to comply with those State laws which require the license card to be carried somewhere on the vehicle, without being apt to lose the card.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing and will be hereinafter fully set forth. v
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying my invention,
Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same,
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
The invention is illustrated as embodied in a parking light but it will be understood that it may be embodied in a headlight, tail light, dash light, or other light. The body 1 may be of any suitable material, preferably metal, and may have any desired configuration, being shown as circular in cross section.
In the annexed drawing, the front end of the body is shown as covered by a pane 2 of transparent material, such as glass or mica, held in place by a cap or flanged ring 8 which may be secured upon the body in any desired or convenient manner, as by. a set screw 4-. The opposite or rear end of the body is covered by a lens 5 colored red and held in place by a cap or flanged ring 6 which may be secured to the body by a set screw 7. In the side of the body is a sight opening 8 which may be glazed, as shown at 9, and is normally covered or closed by a shutter 10 of any preferred material having its ends slidably fitted in ways 11 on the inner surface of the body and equipped with a knob or handle 12 playing in a slot 13 in the body. While I prefer to employ the shutter 1923. Serial No. 629,919.
and to glaze the opening, it will be understood, of course, that the opening may be left unglazed and that the shutter may be omitted. On the inner surface of the body, opposite the opening 8 are longitudinal cleats 14: in which are engaged and held the edges of the operators permit or license card, indicated at 15.
Between the ends of the body, a foot or base 16 is secured thereto in any desired manner, and this foot or base is hollow, as shown, so as to form a housing or guard for the conductors 17 which feed an electric bulb 18 held in a socket 19 formed in the body at the top of the foot or base.
It willbe readily seen from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing that I have provided a very simple means whereby the license card will be secured against loss yet may be easily examined whenever the occasion arises. The card is held directly opposite the sight opening so that it may be easily seen and read therethrough and said opening should be so located that the area of the imperforate portion of the body below the sight opening will serve as a shield to protect the eyes of the observer from the glare of the bulb 18 which shines directly upon the card.
Further it will be obvious that by this device a dual purpose or function is performed, that is it acts not only as a holder or carrier and a protection for the license card but also is a signal or indicator at night when the car is parked for example.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1s In a device of the character described, for use on vehicles, the combination of a lamp body open at both ends, a lens fitted in each of said open ends, said body having a sight opening in one side. card holding means on the interior of the body opposite the sight opening, a shutter slidably mounted in the body and operable from the exterior thereof to cover or uncover the sight opening, and an illuminating element mounted in the body below the sight opening.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature.
GEORGE CUR-RAN.
