Application filed July 27, 1920. Serial No. 399,229.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. \VILLIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of lVayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Conveyors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in conveyors .and aims to provide a conveyer or carrier, by means of which material may be elevated or lowered, the invention being especially designed for use in completing construction.
Another object is the provision of a conveyer, by means of which material of various kinds used in the construction of a building may be conveniently and economically handled.
A further object is the provision of a portable conveyer for the above purpose, which is simple in construction and which may be lengthened or shortened to suit the needs of the building, in connection with which it is used.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings. 7
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the conveyor showing a portion of a scaffold and illustrating the use of the invention.
Figure 2is a front elevation of the conveyer. i
Figure 3 is an enlarged end elevation of one of the timber carriers.
Figure 4 is a front elevation of the same.
Figure 5 is an enlarged front elevation of one of the hod carriers. 7
Figure 6 is a plan view of the same.
Figure 7 is an enlarged section on the line 77 of Figure 5 showing a hod by dotted lines. I
Referring to the drawingsin detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the invention which is of the portable type of conveyer comprises a frame 10, the latter including spaced upright members 11 which rise from a base 12 and which are suitably braced as shown at 13. Disposed transversely of the upright members 11 areshafts 1 1 and 15, the former being mounted in adjustable bearings 16 which are carried by the members 11 of the frame, while the shaft 15 rotates in removable bearings 17. Mounted upon the shafts 1 1 and Marc sprocket wheels 18, the said wheels being capable of adjustment longitudinally of the shafts to regulate their relative positions. Operating over the sprocket wheels 18 are, sprocket chains 19, the said chains being formed of a plurality of links, any one of which may be secured to carriers which, together with the chains form the conveyer. By providing the adjustable bearings 16, the relative positions of the shafts l4 and 15 may be regulated to adjust the tension of the chains, while by means of the removable bearings 17 the shaft 15 may be removed and positioned upon an extension (not shown) provided for the members 11 so as to increase the length of the conveyer.
The carriers are of novel construction, being especially designed for holding different materials used in building construction. They may be alternately arranged as shown in the drawings, one carrier 20 being designed to receive lumber, pipe, or like ma- 7 terial, while the other carrier 21 is designed for the purpose of holding a hod such as usuallyemployed to hold bricks or mortar.
The carriers 20 are arranged in pairs and oppositely disposed, each pair of carriers being secured to side bars or brackets 22, having cars 23 secured to the chain links. Secured to each of the bars or brackets 22 are the opposite ends of receptacles and include oppositely disposed straight rectangular walls 24; and divergingwalls 25 extending from adjacent edges of the straight walls 24 and terminating in outwardly directed extensions 25' of each pair of carriers being connected by brace bars 26. As the carriers are oppositely disposed,
they may be operated in either direction and to receive material are elevated or lowered.
The carriers 21 include transverse membrs 27 which are secured to the chains 19 and are provided with spaced outwardly extending V shaped tapered receptacles 27 one end of which is inclined upwardly as at 28. These receptacles are designed to receive hods, the body portions of which are seated within the receptacle with the handles of the hod extending downward. The hods may thus'be elevated in filled condition and removedfrom the carriers and seated there in after they have been emptied in order that they may be'returned and refilled.
As illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawings the conveyer may be arranged so as to deposit material at difierent elevations, so that material for the erection of a wall'or scaffold may be handled simultaneously.
The invention is susceptible of various 5 changes in its form, proportlonsand mlnor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall Within the scope of the appended claim. Having described the invention, what is 10 claimed is 1 terial, said carriers comprising brackets, ears arranged in said brackets mid-Way between their ends and being secured to said chains, straight Walls secured to said brackets in contacting engagement therewith, one of said Walls being arranged on each side of the ears, arms arranged at diverging inclinations and formed on the adjacent ends of the straight Walls an extension formed in each inclined arm and being inclined in the same direction as the inclined arms but to a greater degree and a brace rod l'iaving inclined ends secured to the ends of the respective extensions.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
' GEORGE H. WILLIS.
