Description
c. E. WARNER, E `-NEW YORK, N. Y., .assieNoR'uoJoHN .'nsTEvENs, 'or sAME PLAGE.
MACH-INE non ,runtime WOODEN BOXES.
AvSpecification of Letters Patent No. z*154.715, dated January 18, 1.840. i
Y To all whom it may concern Be it known vthat I, CHAUNGEY E. WAR- NER, ofthe city, county, and State of New York, machinist, have invented, lmade, and applied to use certain fnew and useful Improvements 1in ethe ycombination and arrangement of welll-known `mechanical means with parts invented or improved by me for the purpose of manufacturing Wood boxes, commonly known as druggists boxes, and
p similar boxes for other purposes, for which improvements I seek Letters Patent of the United States, and that the said improvements, andthe mode of constructing and using :the same and the effects obtained thereby are .fully set forth vand shown in the following .description and in the drawing attached to and making part of :this specica'tion, whereinf Figure 1,is a plan ofthe machine. Fig. 2 is an elevation o-f the same, and Fig, -3 a cross section of the principal Working parts, the auxiliary figures, for clearer .explanation, are separately referred to, and the same letters and numbers, as marks of reference, apply to the same parts in all the several figures.
A, A1 is the frame or bed carrying the working parts of the machine.
B, is the mandrel head or frame sliding on two side slideways a, a, screwed on the beds A and A1; b is the mandrel arbor, with the driving drum c, from which a belt is to communicate `with any prime mover. d is the mandrel nose on which is screwed a solid chuck e connected by two Wing flanches flanch f1, is a chisel edged flat cutter g1. These form the rebate on the top of the box and are held in place by screwed clamps h and h1. In front of the chuck c, a spiral v bit or auger z' is screwed in long enough to go nearly or quite through the cylinder e1 but of a less diameter than the interior of the cylinder, this chuck withv the cylinder and bit are shown in half size nearly in the detached Fig. 5.
At the opposite end of the bed frame A, A1, is a platform C with a semi-circular groove Z, Whose center is on the same line with the -center of the Achuck 'and cylinderv e, 61. Above this la broad' clamp piece 7c is jointed on by --hinges, with a triangular groove, corresponding with `the groove'Zin the platform C. These serve-to yhold the rounded material which is to be formed into boxes and covers. A
r0n the side of the lbed frame A1, is the saw vplatform D, made of a set of upper blocks m, :upon the bed, on that side, Aand similar blocks n, below the bed. These Jare connected lat the cuter end, 'by a pair of cross clamps and screw Ibolts 0, and atthe part :next the bed by a similar pair of cross clamps and'screw bolts 01. By'sla'cking these the platform D can be shifted' longitudinally on the bed vA1 and secured again at any required adjustment by tightening the screw vbolts'on the clamps 01. On the platform are .the slide ways p, p1, between these is the slide g with two small standards g1,
in these the arbor rvcarries the driving drums and :small circular saw yt. Aft the backend of the slide fg is a joint bar 'v whose other end is :connected to a vertical lever u whose fulcrum is ina roller fw., through which it passes and Aat the lower end of the lever fa is the counterweight 00.
At the back of the mandrel frame B Ia long cross lever y is screwed on, extending back and finishing with a slotted end, through which ay bolt and nut connects the bar y to a longitudinal bar a which at the other end is widened out, to allow of a triangular groove al being formed in it, and on the hypothenuse lof the groove a long spring a2 extends to reach the outer face of the groove forming the base, this groove receives a pinza, on the saw slide g, the fore .end of the bar iskept in place by the pinesY of the main frame, and on this end of the upper piece of the main frame a quadrant guide piece asf prevents the lever passing under this end of thel frame, when the leveris depressed by the workman, to draw the Y' ments and sizes. i.,
The workman places' a long solid cylinmandrel` forward,A From the' backV end ofl the mandrel B a strap y1 passes over' a roller y2 and finishes with a counterweight 3/3,
which brings back the mandrel'tothe origi-V the workman? 1 On the Vside A of nal position, when the lever `as. is raisedby themain frame a pair of slotted slides g4 are screwed down havingeach a small carriage g5 tojreceive theV ends of a small arbor y, which carries the triangular gage stopy, whose use is to'gage the length of the materialgto be worked on. Upon the foot of the mandrel frame B-on the side A a'counter slide g/is Vfitted with slots to receive bolts y", by which it maybe adjusted to any position, theuse of this is,
that as the mandrel comes up for its work,
the -counterslide passingV under the gage, throws it outward clear ofthe materiall which is to be operated on by the-bit c'. A small stop gage w1 on the side A1, regulates the extent of the motion ofthe mandrel head' and the machine thusmade is to be used as follows when adjusted to the required moveder of any description of `wood made accurately the size of thelhollow cylinder 'el into the groove Z, with the inner end against the point of the gage stop y?, and holding it by the clamp k, draws ,the lever e? 4in` the direction of the arrowV 1, the strap 2,5 will draw the mandrel head B and chuck toward the wooden materialA which passing into the cylinder c1, will be bored o ut by thebitz' until the 'motion of the mandrel head is stopped by thegage m1, andthe shoulder of the box will be cut by theY cutters bottom of the box.
g and g1, on the wings f, f1. The longitudinal bar a havino` been Vadjustedby the bolts and slots on tzhe bar y will'now-have slidden in the sameV direction` untilA the Y spring e2 in the slot el has passed the-pin z3,
on Q, the workman now returns the lever backward, by which theVV counterweight g/S will begin to withdraw the bit i at thesame time that the hypothenuse of the grooveel will force the pin e3 with the saw slide g and saw ,toward the centeroflthe machine, and the position having been adjusted accordingly, the saw will cut` o' Vthe wood,-so as'to leave the proper thickness to form theV On the mandrel ,head returninggto its original position thebar 1e will also vreturn until the pin "e3 comes into the rightangled part of the triangularf groove el and 'the weight m on the vertical lever@ fand joint piece 'v will draw the saw slide g andV saw t back into the standing position, out offthe Y Vway of the nextlength of mandrel to be operated on.` By repeating theseoperations any Vnumber of boxes may be successfully made.
By substitutino' thechuck shown in the detached Fig. 6 for that shown inthe Fig. 5, andV fitting a bit therein the same dianieterasthe shoulders of the boxes made, and adjusting the .parts ofthe machine for the required length the covers or'tops of the boxes can be made in the same manner in all otherfrespectswith the advantage that each cover or top will lit everybox, and by usingV chucks and cylinders with` bits of various dianfietersV and lengths every required size or length of box may bereadily` made.` The levers7 may be attached to a treadle and workedby the foot` instead of by hand if foundconvenient todoV so. w
l W'hat` I claim'as new andof myown in vention isf` j y l; The mode of connecting the chuck e with the hollow` cylinderel, by the, wing ianges f, f1, thereby giving a space for clearing chips in workingV and .forming bearings for the cutters. g, g1, and thecombination of these parts with the bit and sliding mandrel head B, when used for the purposes of bo-ring out woodenfboxes and rebating the tops for the covers andV making the covers substantially as the same are herein described.
.in the underside,` and` the operation of the saine through'the pin cato advance the saw t to cut 01T thematerial and allow thesaw to return immediately by the operation of the -weight w, and the combination of the said bar z'andgroove el, and spring e3, with Vthe saw and Vparts connected therewith when used forforining wooden boxes, substantially as the same are herein described.
Inwitness whereof I have heretunto set.
my hand this twenty ninth day of October one thousand eight hundredgand thirty nine in the presence of the witnesses subscribing hereto. l 1 y n f i CHAUNCEY EpWARNER. Witnesses: j Y
