and useful Pumping Jack, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to pumping jacks for deep wells; and has for its salient objects, first, to provide a simple rig adapted for cable operation and readily attachable to a well casing in situ; second, to afford facilities for engaging the polish rod for operation at any desired position of the latter; and, third, to furnish. means for varying the throw or travel of the pump rod.
Other objects and advantages will appear hereinafter, and while I show herewith and will describe a preferred form of construction, I desire to be understood that I do not limit myself to such form, since various ch-anges and adaptations may be madetherein without departing from the spirit of my invention as hereinafter claimed.
My objects are attained by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Figure 2 is an end elevation, of my improved jack in place on a well casing. Figure 3 is a plan view of the same. Similar numerals refer views.
The form of my invention selected for illustrative purposes comprises a pair of base timbers 1 having centrally positioned saddle blocks 2, held together by bolts 3. By means of the latter thebase may be tightly clamped upon a well casing 4 at any desired position below the casing head 5. I
On the base timbers are mounted four pillow blocks 6 and each pair of these carries a transverse rocker shaft 7. Each of these shafts has an overhung bifurcated crank 8 keyed thereto, and these are linked together by connecting rod 9 in such manner that they are constrained to rotate in opposite directions through their operating angles.

cave gripping jaws 14: at their inner-ends. Jaws 14 are eccentric with respect to pins 15, about which they are adapted to swing, and in this way they are enabled to exert a very powerful toggle grip upon polish rod 16 which operates thepump plunger in the well casing.
An actuating crank 17 is affixed to either of the rocker shafts, and cable 18 is attached thereto in such] a manner that a sufiicient pull exerted by the cable will cause the mechanism to lift the polish rod. The weight of the latter, together with that of the pump plunger and parts depending therefrom, will serve to restore the mechanism to the position it assumes at the bottom of its stroke as soon as the pull on the cab-1e is released. Obviously therefore a reciprocating up and down motion will be imparted to the polish rod by alternately pulling on and slacking off the cable in the manner commonly employed for pumping in oil districts and similar situations.
The pumping mechanism proper forms no part of the present invention and therefore is not shown. It may consist of any suitable plunger and working barrel at any depth within casing 4:, or the latter may be used as the working barrel. As depicted I have shown the casing head provided with an out-let orifice 19, and a gland 2O surrounding the polish rod.
It will be noted that the weight of the de pending parts will not only serve to restore the mechanism to its low position as explained, but will also continuously maintain the toggle grip on the polish rod unless it is intentionally released. Furthermoreit will be seen that this grip may be applied at any point on the rod, permitting of lengthening the latter and pumping at any desired depth.
For securing a variable stroke of the polish rod, I provide rocker arms 10, and toggle arms 12, with a series of holes as 21 and 22 respectively. By changing the connecting pins of links 11 to these other respective holes, a variation in the throw of the mechanism is effected.
The alignment of the polish rod is maintained by gland 20, and this in turn maintains the alignment of the rest of the mechanism.
