7 diate its ends with a slot 19 at approximately formed with the middle of the slide, the upper end of this slot being downwardly inclined and away from the wall 12, while the lower end of the slot'is upwardly inclined and away from the wall 12. The slot is cut away at 20 andthe faces of the slotadjacent; this cut-away portion are slightly rounded off or thinned; c V v V Disposed within the chamber '11 is a slide 2-1. The upper end of this chamber is the inwardly extending shoulders 22 and 23 .and the, slide at its lower end 2e has a width equal to the extreme width ofthe chamber'll'and then is reduced in width so as to'provide shoulders 25, these shoulders being adapted to engage with the shoulders 22- andf28 to limit the outward movementof the slide. The upper end'of the slideis formed with the enlarged head 26 which, of course, is larger inarea than the cross sectional area of the chamber 11 so that this head limits the inward movement of the'slide as well as forms a handle whereby the slide may be operated. This slide is formed witha slot 27. The bottom of thisislot extends straight inward from that portioniof the, slot nearest the opening 13 and on a level with the lower end of this opening and then extends upward, as at 28. The upper endof the slot is curved downward and away from the partition 12,
' miner to whom the check belongs and who has mined certain'coal.
In the use ofsthis device, the'holder. is attached to the car,'as illustrated in Figure 5. and after the miner has filled the car,
with coal he pulls out'the slide 15 which,
when pulled out, permitsthe checkto be in.- troduced at the cut-away portion 20. The check is held within the slot 19 by the end walls of the chamber 10 until the slide is fully pushed in. When the slide is fully pushed in, the check will roll down the inclined bottom of the slot 19 and roll down the inclined bottom of the passage 13 and onto the bottom of the slot 27.
When it is in place within the slot 27. it cannot roll back up these inclined faces and must remain within the slide'21. If it is desired to inspect this check, thenv the slide 21 may jbe pulled outward, carrying the check with it. l/Vhen the slide is pulled outward, as illustrated in Figure 2, the slots 31 are disposed beyond the wall'so t the chamber 11 and, therefore, the number on the check may be readily seen. Preferably,
as before remarked, the. numbers are di v posed on opposite faces of the checkin 'diaf metrically opposite positions sothat no matter where the check is disposed the number Wlll be observable through the openings liurthermorawhen the slide 211s fully re-J tracted, the check 32 may be shifted byhand until the number is observable.
Under ordinary circumstances the chain bers 10 and 11 are vertical and, "therefore, once the check is deposited'and passed into the slide 21 it cannot be removed, but whenthe car is carried to the tipple and is tipped, 7
as a consequence'the check will roll from the slot 27 through the passage 13 into the slot 19 and under these circumstances when this slide 15 is pulled out the check-will come with'it and may be readily removed by the weigher; i a '3 It will be seenthat with this device two checks cannot be deposited in the slot 27 at the same time and if a second check is deposited it will remain in the slide 15.. This device is very simple, can be readily applied, and is certain in its action. Of course, it is obvious that the slot 27 might be made large enough to holdtwo checks if desired as, for instance, where there is a V check for the miner and also a check for an V operator working with him. Of course. 7
