Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J OH'N S. RYAN, OF MILIVAUKEE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO THOMAS C. RYAN, OF BERLIN, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-CHECKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,434, dated February 10, 1874; application filed August 16, 1873.
To all 207mm yit may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. RYAN, of Milwaukee, IVisconsin, have invented an Improvement in Door-Holders, ot' which the following is a specication:
My invention relates to devices called a door-holder to be attached to a door, and used for the purpose of holding it open any desirable space, as shown by Fin the perspective vieiv, Figure l of the accompanin g drawing. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the holder, but it is more fully illustrating by a reference to the sectional view, Fig. 3, which shows its inner construction and mechanism.
My improvement consists particularly of the .foot-catch device pivoted to the upper end ot' the bolt, and arranged for action with a ratchet-rack, forming a, prolongation of the bolt-case, whereby the bolt can bc operated by the foot, both to hold and release the door, by turning the catch device to bring it into or carry it from the ratchet-rack.
The holder consists of a sliding` bolt, G, operating in a case or box, F. y To the lower end of the bolt I att-ach a block of rubber or other pliable material, H, which forms a protection to the iioor or carpet, the end` being beveled to permit of more freedom of pressure against the floor.
On the upper end of the bolt I atl tach a ratchet-dog, I, Where it can be operated upon by the foot, both to press the bolt down and attach itself to or be freed from the ratcheti K on the upper end of the case F. The bolt is raised from the oor by the action of the spiral spring L placed in a groove in the bolt and resting on a stationary pin, B, fastened to the inside ofthe case F, and enters the groove in the bolt.4 The same action oi' the spring can also be had by having the spring coiled around the bolt, a portion of it on the inside of the case being made round for that purpose.
The holder operates by placing the foot on the dog I and pressing the bolt G down until the block H is firmly pressed against the floor. Then the dog I is tipped back from the ratchet K, the spiral spring L, having been contracted in pressing the bolt down, will raise the bolt from the iloor.
I claim as my invention The foot-catch device I, pivoted to the top ot' the bolt G, and arranged for action with the ratchet-rack K, forming aprolongation ot' the bolt-case F, as and for the purpose described.
` JOHN S. RYAN.
