c. w. WYMAN MINING APPARATUS Original Filed July 25, 1919 Patented Nov. 13, 192 3.
UNITED STATES.
CHARLES W. WYMAN, OF CLARE-MONT, NEW HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOR TO SULLIVAN MACHINERY COMPANY, CORPORATIQN OF MASSACHUSETTS,
MINING APPARATUS.
Application filed July 25, 1919, Serial No. 313,206. Renewed October 16, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. W'YMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Claremont, in the county of Sullivan and State of' New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mining Apparatus, of whichthe following is a full, clear, and exact specification. I
My invention relates to mining apparatus.
It'has'for its object to provide an improved and simplified controlling mechanism for electrically propelled mining machines. A further object of my invention is to provide an improved controlling mechanism for such machines wherein sparking at the controller is eliminated, the danger of grounding on the machineframe is minimized, and wherein without unduly increasing the cost of the apparatus the entire mechanism. may be made to function in an improved manner. These and other objects and advantages of my improved construe tion will, however, hereinafter more fully appear.
For purposes of illustration, I have shown "in the accompanying drawings one embodiment which my inventionmay assume in practice.
In these drawings,- r
Fig. l is a plan view'of a mining apparatus equipped with my improvement.
Fig. 2 is a diagram of the circuit connections.
In this illustrative construction I have shown a mining machine 1 which may be of any desired constructionadapted to be trans" ported upon a usual mining machine truck 2, the mining .machine having an electric motor 8 connected to a cable 4 on a cable reel 5 carried on the truck, through connections including an intermediate flexible leador cable 6, all in a generally well known manner.
In this construction the controller mechanism, illustrated generally in Fig. 1 at 7, and including a supplementalv controlling switch, hereinafter described, is shown to be enclosed in one side of the mining machine, and the resistance controlled thereby, herein indicated at 8, is also carried by the machine and herein enclosed in the opposite side of the same, while an improved controlling switch, hereinafter described, controlled by the controller and itself controlling the main motor circuit, is, with the usual line fuses 22, disposed in the line, the same herein being disposed between the lead 6 and suitable reel leads 9 and 10 connected to the opposite ends of the reel 5, both the contactor and the fuses preferably being housed in a suitable casing 11 disposed on the truck slightly in front of the reel and connected between the lead 6 and the reel leads 9 and 10. r
Referring to Fig. 2, it will be observed that I have shown in this figure a wiring diagram of the electrical connections required, substantially as described and claimed in my co-pending application Serial No. 300,455, filed May 28, 1919. As the controller mechanism and these electrical connections, however, do not enter specifically into the present invention, it is believed unnecessary to consider the same more in detail herein than to say that when the controller mem: ber, herein an arm 12, is operated tocut out or in the resistance 8 connected in the armature circuit, gripping contacts 13 movable with the arm engage a slidable sector 14 and, through the interlocking of this sector with a bell crank switch member 15 cause the latter to be thrown into or out of engagement with a contact 16, thereby opening or closing a light control circuit through a conductor 17 connected to the line conductors 18, 19, and adapted to energize or deenergize an electro-responsive switch or contactor 20 to close or open One side of the line, herein making or breaking the current flow through contacts 21 in the line conductor 18. Herein, it will be observed that the entire controller, including its resistance and its switch 15, is carried upon the machine frame 1, and that the contactor 20 is disposed between the motor and the line, the same herein being carried upon the rear end of the truck frame and preferably housed in the same casing 11 with the line fuses 22.
As a result of my improvement wherein a supplemental line circuit making and breaking mechanism is used and the controller per se serves only to make or break a controlling circuit for a contactor which takes all the arcing, objectionable arcing on the machine is eliminated and the danger of grounding on the machine frame, and consequent danger to the operator, is minimized. At the same time it will be noted that a simple and inexpensive construction I the invention may be modi is made possible, and one which, if desired, permits the contactor to be carried on t truck by the use of only a single additional conductor in the cable Further, it will be observed that by l eating my improved contactor on the truck, s disti" l from on the machine the space on the machine is materially increaseo so that the size of the mining machine mechanism per so, which is preferably housed v. i in the machine casing, is not li iiited by the necessity for reserrin oace for the eontrob ling mechanism. .3 ention is also directed to the liactthat throag gh mounting the con taetor upon the truck, as disti guis'ahed fr Lil upon the fti'iachine, the injurious Jr to which the con .ctor would otherw. subjected is .ted, the machijsiie remoyed from the truck (lurii cui'ti that the contractor is subject to whatsoever.
While 1 have in this applic cally described one Qllllj'OtlllllQ invention may assume in pr; be understood that this l'orm ()"if the same is used for purposes of illustration. and that.
