To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gorrrnrno H. Rain, a citizen of the Republic. of Switzerland, residing in Cincinnati, in the county of I'Iamilton and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Razor- Blade Stropper, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for stropping razor blades of either the double or single edged type, in which an object is to produce a stropping device adapted to permit of the rough and finish stropping operation on both sides of each edge to be without having to remove the blade from the device or to change the adjustment or relation of the parts of the derice with relation to each other or the blade. This invention, as I have shown it in Figs. 1 and 2, consists of a frame of relatively heavy wire 6, which is in the form of a V. the point of the V being made of a series of spring loops 7, 8, and 9, loops and 9 of which are in the form of coils while loop 8 is merelv U shaped to leave a space 10 between coil s 7 and 9. The action of the coils is that of an expanding spring which holds the frame branches 11 and 12 apart. This spreading action is to hold a strop 13 in taut condition, the strop being mounted on the branches by means of loops 14 and 15. To prevent the strop from slipping upon the braches I provide friction rings 16 and 17 which hold it adjacent to the handles 18 and 19 which are mounted on the ends of the branches. Upon loop 8 I mount for pivotal and sliding actionthereon a blade holder having a clip 20 which has apertures 21 and 22 in the branches 23 and 24. thereof the device with its Serial No. 601,444..
to'permit such freedom of movement. An aperture 25 in the base 26 of the clip mounts the reduced end 27 of a rod 28 pivotally therein. the end being headed as shown at 29 to prevent disengagement from the clip. Rod 28 is provided with a flattened portion 36 at the point where it crosses strop 13, two headed pins 31 and 32 beingprovided for receiving apertures 33 and 3st of a razor blade 35 which is to be stropped. A cl amping plate 36, which has apertures 87 and 38 therein, is provided for placing it over the headed pins 31 and 32, slots 39 and 40, which extend from the apertures 37 and 38, having been provided for permitting the plate being shifted to clamp the razor blade in position upon surface 30- of the rod. To permit the rod to be mounted I have provided a handle 41 attached to the end thereof.
In the operation of the device the action of the spring loops causes the strop to be drawn taut so that the movement of the rod 28 in the arc of a circle will permit of the edges of the blade being brought into stropping contactwith the surface of the strop. In this movement but very slight rotative or pivotal movement of the rod will permit of an edge being stropped upon each forward and backward movement of the rod 28. This operation takes place first over the rough side of the strop and then over the finishing side, the latter operation being car ried out. by swinging rod 28 and clip 20 through space 10 to the other side of the strop.
In Fig. 5 I have shown a modification of the coiled spring shown in connection with the construction illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2,
in which there has been but one loop 42 provided.
To remove the strop the handles may be pulled from the ends of branches 11 and 12, when the looped ends of the strop may be slipped from the branches. To remove rod 28 and clip 20, one handle, as for example handle 18 may be removed. loop 14 of the strop slipped off the branch, friction ring 16 also slipped off, and the clip 20 slipped aroundthe coils of loop 7cand off of the branch 11, the coils of loops 7 and 9 being separated for this purpose as shown in 2. The modification shown in Fig. 5, having but one loop 42, does not permit of the swinging of the blade holder from one side to the otherofthe .strop. For this reason 7 it is but necessary in this construction to remove the strep from one branch of the frame and to pass it to the other side of the blade holder in order to accomplish the result obtained by providing the space '10 described in the preferred construction.
H. ving thus described my invention what I claim is 1. A razor blade stropper comprising a frame having-two branches, a strep extending between the branches, and a-blade holder adapted to be moved over-the strep between the branches, said frar shaving means between the branches adapted yieldingly to hold them apart and to mount the blade holder for movement between them.
A razor blade stropper consisting of a substantially V-shaped frame having a spring at the point of the V adapted to hold the branehes apartyieldingly, a strop between the branches and attached thereto, and
a blade holder attached to the spring for mowemeni; thereonover the strop.
