Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J ONATHAN X. PEASE, OF' IRWINS STATION, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS BIGHT TO CHARLES H. CARUTHERS IMPROVEMENT !N CAR-COUPLINGS.
Specication forning part of Letters Patent No. l47,428, datedFelrnary10,1874;applicaicn filed December 13, 1873. V
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ONATIIAN X. PEASE, of Irwin s Station, in the County of lVestmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Couplin g Pins and I do hereby deelare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this speeification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a View of my coupling-pin. Fig. 2 is a view of my eoupling-pin as applied. Fig. 3 is a detail view.
This invention has relation to link-pins for the couplin gs of railroad-cars; and it consists in a wrought-iron coupling-pin having a castiron head. My object is not only to facilitate and cheapen the manufacture of these pns, but also to construct them in such nanner that, in the event of a pin becoming bent from any cause, the head thereof can be rea-dily cracked and removed from its shank, and the latter straightened and again used by casting another head on it, as will be hereinafter fully explained.
In the anneXed drawings, A represents the shank of the improved coupling-pin, which is made of wrought-iron, and which may have an have been removed from the sand and the sec tons of the fiask have been put together, the metal poured through the sprue-hole will fill up the mold for the head and leave shank A hcaded, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Such a head can be readily'broken and removed from the shank in ease the latter becomes bent, so that the bent shank can be easily straightened and again used by casting another head on it.
hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A wrought-metal coupling-pin, A, having a cast-metal head, B, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testinony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JONATHAN X. PEASE.
