Description

Nov. 113 11923.
S. J. VESELY SHOCK ABSORBER Filed Oct. 27. 1921 Patented Nov. 13, 1923.
Unit
STANLEY J'. VESELY, OF CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA.
SHOCK ABSORBER.
Application filed October 27, 1921. Serial No. 510,738.
To all whom it may] concern:
Be it known that I, STANLEY J. VEsnLY, citizen of the United States, residing at Cedar Rapids, in th 5 State of Iowa, havei and I do hereby decl a full, clear, and ex&
tor vehicles, has more espe e county of Linn and nvented certain new and efnl Improvements in Shock Absorbers;
are the following to be ct description of the inntion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and e the same.
This invention relates to the springs of moparticularly automobiles, and
cial reference to shock-absorbers of a type set forth in Letters Patent No.
1,384,545, issued to In July, 1921.
In the patent referred to, the shock-absorber was more especially designed for that type of motor vehicles in which the body springs are mounted The object of this in a shock-absorb e other class of springs, disposed ing had to the accom which: F 1g. 1 is a side elevation of a device emthereof being in se Fig. 2. same in the line 2-2 the lett.
dying my invention, the
line 83 of Fig. 2.
The shock-absorber itself is same as that described in the patent referred to,
e on the twelfth day of parallel with the axles, ventlon 1s to adapt such er for use in connection with cross panying drawing, in
principal parts ction in the line 11 of Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the of Fig. 1, looking to 3 is a plan view below the practically the above but modified to meet the r qnirements of the other type of spring. It
comprises a pair of coil-s washer hicle axle,
prings 5 mounted a pair of spring-barrels 6 connected by a which is adapted to be clamped to a The springs are held between 5 8, which have a limited movement the barrels, by bolts 9, which at their upidge slides up and down in slots 11 connect with a bridge 10.
The in the spring barrels. in the patent referred to the spring is connected with this bridge. tit This invention contemplates its connection with either a spring, of which 12 represents the lower member, or a part of the frame 13, as shown. In either case it is preferred to hang the part below the bridge and the same is accordingly arched at to admit the con necting member. It is also provided with a pairof depending lugs 10 to support said member by means of a cross-pin 14. F or connection of the lower spring a bearing- 6w plate 15 is provided, which fits the top of the yoke, and is bolted thereto at 16, the same holes being used that are otherwise employed for clamping the absorber to an axle by stirrups. his bearing-plate is provided with vertical lugs 15 to receive a springpin 17.
By this simple device the shock-absorber is adapted for any ordinary type of vehicle spring, however disposed with respect to the 7 body of the vehicle.
Having thus described my invention, claim:
l. A shock-absorber, comprising a pair of separated springs, slotted housings for said springs, a connecting yoke, springreceiving lugs projecting upwardly from the yoke and a bridge, slidable in said slots, and hearing on the pair oi springs, provided with de pending lugs to engage an upper member. so
2. A shock-absorber, comprisin; a pair oi separated compression sprin s, slotted hous ings therefor, a connecting yoke, a lower spring bearing-plate with upstanding lugs connecting with the yoke, an. upper bridge 8 siidable in the housing slots. and having depending lugs to engage an upper i'r'icmher, and pins to connect the spring members with the bearing-plate and bridge.
In testimony whereof? I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
