FRANK P. MTT TS OF BERWRTEY, ml TIFORNIA,
ADJUSTMENT ATTACHMENT FO?. HYDSBAULC TESTNG APPARATUS.
Application filed January 24, 192i.
T all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that i, 'FRANK BVMILLs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berkeley, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustment Attachments for Hydraulic Testing Apparatus, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention is an adjustment attachment for hydraulic testing apparatus, for adjusting the position of the pressure cylinder and piston with relation to the work table.
Referring to the annexed drawing inV which my invention is illustrated and which forms a part of this specification:
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of a hydraulic testing apparatus Vand my adjustment attachment Yattached thereto.
VFigure 2 is a horizontal section ofthe testing apparatus taken on line 2-2 of .Figure 1.
A hydraulic testing apparatus to which my invention is attached will firstY be described. Through a horizontal work table 1 at the corners thereof extend vertical rods 2, on the lower end of which rods screw nuts 3 and et respectively against the lower and upper side of the work table. A cylinder head 5 is provided with apertures 6 at its corners through which apertures extend the rods 2. Said head is secured to the upper end of a cylinder 7 by means of bolts 8 which extend through an external iiange 9 onV the upper end of the cylinderinto the head. Nuts 10 screw on the rods 2 which are threaded, upon which nuts rest the cylinder head 5 whereby the cylinder 7 may be supported at diiferent elevations. W ing nuts 11 screw on the rods 2 against the upper side of the cylinder head 5 for holding the head firmly on the nuts l0. A piston 12 reciprocates in the cylinder 7, to which piston is connected a rod 13 which extends through a stufling box 14: in the lower head of the cylinder. A press head 15 is mounted on the lower end of the piston rod 13, said head being made in two sections 16 and 17 secured together by bolts 18, the upper section being provided with a central aperture 19 through which theV rod 13 extends, and with a recess 20 in its under side below said aperture in which fits a head 21 on the lower end of the piston rod. A pipe 22 extends below the working table and upwardly through the center thereof, said pipe being Serial No. 439,638.
controlled by a valve 23. A port 24textends through one side of the lower head section 16 and through the center of the under side thereof, the end of said port at the side of the section being connected to a pipe 25 controlled by a valve 26. A pipe 27 controlled by a valve 28 extends into the cylinder 7 through the upper head 5. A pipe 2) controlled by a valve 30 extends into the cylinder 7 through the lower head thereof.
My adjustment attachment includes a plate a() mounted on the'upper end of rods 2, a cylinder fit1 mounted on said plate, a piston i2 mounted to reciprocate in said cylinder, and a piston rod t3 connected at its lower end tov the cylinder head 5. The cylinder Ll-l has a stuffing box iet at its lower end which extends through an opening d5 in the plate i0, the lower head of the cylinder resting on said plate. The plate et() has apertures 4:6 through which extend the upper end of the rods 2. Nuts a7 screw on the upper end of rods 2 on which nuts rest the plate .40. Nuts i3 screw on the upper end of the rods 2 against the top of the'plate 40, locking the plate on the rods 2 against the nuts i7.
A valve t) controls the air in the cylinder d1. T he valve a9 includes a piston 50 which is controlled by a rod 51, said rod passing through a gland 52 in the end of the valve 56. An air line 53 enters at the lower end of the valve di?, and a branch 54 enters the top of said valve. An intake 55 enters the bottom of the cylinder Ll1, the mouth of which is directly opposite the line 53. A cylinder exhaust 56 is positioned slightly above 'the bottom of the cylinder 41, and enters the side of the valve i9 above the pipe 55. A valve exhaust pipe 57 is adapted to lead the air from the valve 119 when the annular groove 58 in the piston 50 registers with the pipes 56 and 57. During this period the lower end of the piston rests over the line and pipe to prevent any intake of air.
The pipe sections, joints, couplings, and so forth, indicated 59, 60 and 61 which are to be tested are placed one upon another with gaskets 62 therebetween, upon the work table 1 over the upper end of the tube 22 and under the inner end of the port 24. lli/vater under pressure is introduced through pipe 27 into the top of the cylinder 7 which forces the piston 12 downwardly and the pressure head 15 tightly into engagement with the upper end of the part 61. -Water under great pressure is introduced through vraising,` the piston 12 and the pressure head l5, the Water in the top of the cylinder being forced out through the pipe 27. The pipe parts 59, 60 and 6l are then removed.
lit the cylinder 7 is too low :t'or the length or' pipe to be tested, the nuts ll are turned until they are raised a suitable height; compressed air is then introduced through pipe 55 into the cylinder 4l raising the piston 42 and the head 5, cylinder 7 and head l5; the nuts l0 are then screwed up to the head 5; the nuts ll are then screwed down to the head, and the compressed air .is then allowed to pass out of the cylinder' Al1 through pipe 56. To lower the cylinder 7 and head l5, compressed air is introduced into the cylinder Lil to hold up the piston 4:2, cylinder 7 and pressure head l5; the nuts 10 are screwed down to the desired level; the air is let out or the cylinder il through pipe 56 until the head rests on nuts 10 and the nuts l1 are then screwed down on the head.
Having' described my invention, Iclaim:
l. In combination with a hydraulic testing apparatus, including a pressure cylinder and a press head, a piston in said cylinder, a rod secured to said piston and said press head, and means to exert pressure on either side of said piston, means for raising` and lowering the pressure cylinder and press head of said apparatus, and means itor securing'said cylinder at different elevations whereby said vcylinder and press head inay be adjusted to accommodate various, sizes or Work.
2. ln combination with a hydraulic testing apparatus, including a pressure cylinder and a press head, a piston in said cylinder,
a rod secured to said piston and said press head, and means to exert pressure on either side oi said piston, and adjustment means for raisingand lowering the pressure cylinder of said apparatus, said adjustment means including a compressed air cylinder, piston, and a piston rod, the piston rod being connec-ted to the pressure cylinder, whereby said cylinder and press head may be adjusted to accommodate various sizes o'll work.
3. In combination with hydraulic testing apparatus, including a pressure cylinder and a press head, a. piston in said cylinder, a rod secured to said piston and said press head, and means to exert pressure on either side of said piston, vertical rods on which the pressure cylinder is adjustably mounted, a plate mounted on said rods above said cylinder, a compressed air cylinder, piston and piston rod 'mounted on said plate, the piston rod being connected to the head or' said pressure cylinder, whereby said cylinder and press head may be adjusted to accommodate various sizes of work.
in testimony whereof l ailix iny signature.
FRANK l". M LLS.
