Be it known that I, EMMET S. SoULn, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Bend, in the county of Pacific and State of VashinUton, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Hooks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a butt hook designed primarily for use in logging, but it is to be understood that a hook in accordance with this invention can be employed for any purposes for which it is found applicable, and the invention has for its object to provide in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a butt hook including a spring controlled manually releasable locking device associated with a guard for Securing the latter in cooperative position with respect to the bill of the hook, to close the latter thereby maintaining Ythe hook in coupled engagement with the article with which it is connected, or rather to prevent the breaking away of the hook, until the guard is released, from the article with which it is attached.

-Further objects of the invention are to provide a hook of the class referred to, in the manner as hereinafter set forth, which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, compact, readily assembled,

" thoroughly etcient in its use, conveniently Openedand closed when occasion so requires, and inexpensive to manufacture.

Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of 'the invention, but it is to be understood that changes. variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hook in accordance with this invention.

Referring to the drawings in detail, a hook in accordance with this 1nvent1on comprises a shank l, formed at one slde with a Serial No. 628,286.

lateral offset 2. The shank 1, near its inner end, is provided with an opening 3 for the purpose of connecting the shank l, to a line, chain, or other object. The shank 1, has extending from one side of its outer end the body portion 4 ofthe hook, and said body portion 4 is curvilinear in contour and terminates in a bill 5, which is spaced from the lateral offset 2 of the shank and which has its free terminus beveled, as at 6, and rnedially of the bill 5, at its free terminus, the bill 5 is formed withV a lug 7 having a beveled end 8.

The lateral offset 2 of the shank is provided with an inclined pocket formed of two different diameters, and that portion of smaller diameter of the ocket is indicated at 9, and the portion of Ilarger diameter at 10. The pocket opens at the outer end of the shank, is disposed at an outward inclination and is arranged whereby it will open outwardly with respect to the lug 7 of the bill 5. rranged in the reduced portion 9 of the pocket is a coiled spring 11, which abuts against the head 12, carried on the inner end of the shank 13 of a spring controlled locking member. Mounted against the shoulder 14. formed at the joinder of the reduced portion 9 with the enlarged portion 10 of the pocket, is a washer 15, against which abuts the head 12 of the locking member. The shank 13 extends through the washer 15.

A part of the wall of the portion 10 of larger' diameter of the pocket is threaded and engaging with said threaded wall is a peripherally threaded holding member 16 formed with a central bore 17, through which extends the shank 13 of the locking member.

The shank 13 permanently extends through the washer 15 and locking member 16 and is of such lengthV as to project from said holding member, for a purpose to be presently referred to. The spring 11, bearing against the head 12, normally maintains the shank 13 in its projected position. The locking member is shifted inwardly manually, against the action of the spring 11, so that when pressure is released from said locking member, the spring 11 will automatically shift the same outwardly, so that the shank 13 will be projected from the holding member 16.

The hook includes a pivoted guard with which the spring controlled locking member associates 'tor the purpose of securing said guard in cooperative relation with respect to the bill 5, to close the hook, thereby maintaining the latter in coupled engagement with the article to Which it is connected, or rather to prevent the breaking away of the hook, unless the guard released, from the article to which the hook is attached. The said guard consists of a body portion 17, having its outer end bifurcated, as at 1S, ttor the vpurpose ot straddling the lug 7. r1`he outer end ofi the body portion 17 is beveled as at 19, and when the body portion is in position, as shown in Figure 1, to close the hook, the said beveledend 19 opposes the beveled end 6 of the bill 5. Formed integralwith the inner end ot the body portion 17 is a pair of arms 20, between which eX- tends the offset portion 2 of the shank 1. The armsQOare pivotally connected to the offset portion 2, by the pin 21, which extends through the arms 20 and also the otfset portion 2. l

iThe body portion 17 is daring trom its outer towards its inner end and the sides thereof form a continuation of the sides of the bill v5. VThe arms 20 are of greater Width than the Width of the body portion 17.

The body portion 17 vis formed with a lengthwise groove 22, at its inner end, forming a clearance for the outer end of the shank 18 and also ivhereby the said outer end` of the shank 13 is protected by the guard. The groove v22 is formed in the guard at the outer side thereof and provides means whereby access can be had to the locking member to release the same.

The holding member V16 is detachable so that it can be removed when occasion requires and a new lock-ing member substituted Yif the locking member becomes damaged or broken, or to substitute a new spring 11 if desired. The locking member is shifted manually inwardly When it is desired to release the guard or shift the gu;` d to close the hook.

Although the preferred embodiment ot construction of butt hook is as shown and described, yet it is obvious that changes in the details of construction can be had which will fall within the light of the invention as claimed.

A. hook comprising -a shank, a body portion projecting therefrom and terminating in a bill, a guard pivotally connected at one end to the shank, said guard extending from said shank and having its free end cooperating with said bill to close the body portion, and a spring controlled and manually releasable locking device carried by the shank and cooperating With said guard for maintaining it in position to close the body portion, said guard having its outer side edge provided with a groove for the reception ot the outer end of the locking device When the latter maintains the guard in position to close the body portion.

A hook comprising a shank.y a body portion projecting therefrom `and terminating in abili, a guard pivotally connected at one end to the shank. said guard projecting from the shank and having its free end cooperating ivith said bill to close the body portion, and a spring controlled and manually rclcasable locking device carried by the shank and extending in and cooperating With said guard for maintaining it in position to close the body portion, and said locking device including removable means ttor detachably connecting it with the shank.

5. A hook comprising a shank, a body portion `projecting therefrom and terminating in a bill, a guard pivotally connected to the shank and cooperating with said bill to close 'the body portion, and aspring controlled and manually releasable loc-king device carried by the shank and extending in and cooperating .'vith said guard for maintaining it in position to close 'the body portion, said guard having its outer side edge provided vvith a groove for the reception of the outer end Voi the locking ydevice when the latter maintains the vguard in position to close the bodyportion, and said locking device Vinnio cluding removable means for connecting it with the shank.

A hook comprising a body portion provided with a .pocket opening at one end thereof, a body portion projecting from said shank and terminating in a bill extending towards the open end of the pocket, a guard pivotally connected to said shank, projecting therefrom and cooperating with detachabl y said bill to close the body portion, a coiled.
