Description

NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE IVILIIIAM L. GIBSON, OF EIIMIRA, NEW' YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-STGVS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,386, dated February 10, 1874,: application filed November 8, lS'B the accumulation of combustiblegases within the oil-chamber, and the consequent danger of the explosion of the apparatus.
In the accompanying drawings, IligureI represents a plan, and Fig. II a vertical section, through the line a' g/,Figz I, of appa- `ratus arranged according to my invention.
Fig. III represents a pla-11 of the lower part of the apparatus separately.
The base or body ofthe stove is constructed in two halves, A B, the lower portion of the rim B'2 ofthe upper' half o1' pan B fitting within the rim of the lowerportion A, as shown at A. The lower half A is divided into two parts, c b, by a partition, a2, the part a forming the oil receiver or chamber, while the part b serves as an air and ventilating space, the top of which is formed by the bottoni Bl of the upper half or tray B, which is arranged to contain water for the purpose of keeping' the lower part of the apparatus cool. C represents the oiLwick tubes, which are secured to the bottom B1 of the tray B 5 and O are ratchet or notched wheels, operated by handles or levers, for raising and adjusting the oil-wicks.
The wicktubes l, when the parts are -in position, as shown by Fig. II, pass through compartments l, in which the ratchet or notched wheels O are arranged. The bottoms and sides of the compartments E are provided with holes or apertures D E', by means of which` any gases generated within the oilchamber a are conducted to the chamber b, from which they escape freely by a series of holes or apertures, b, formed in the side of the chamber b, into the atmosphere.
F F represent a series of projections, attached to the bottom of the pan B, for the purpose of supporting the chimneys and cooking apparatus employed. G G are wate-rjackets surrounding the wick-tubes C, for the purpose of keeping the same cool. cl is the nozzle or mouth, secured by a screw-plug through which the chamber a is supplied with oil.
In. use, the upper tray B should be kept filled with water sufficiently to allow it to rise in the water -jackets G nearly to the level ot' the top of wick-tubes, in order that the wick may be kept cool, and be prevented from charring at the burning-point.
Having thus described my invent-ion, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a stove in which heat is obtained by the burning of kerosene or other hydrocarbon oils, the combination, with the oil-chamber a, of the compartment E, provided with apertures 1) E and chamber b, constructed with perforations b', substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
The foregoing is the specification of my invention, signed by me this 18th day of Sep' tomber, 1875i.
