i. EVERETT RAILWAY CAR COUPLER UNCOUPLING DEVICE Filed Dec. 23, 1920 Patented NovllS, 1923.
e urg ee RAILWAY-CAB-COUPLER UNCUUPLING DEVICE.
Application filed December 23, 1920. Serial No. 432,718.
To all "10720771 it may concern:
7 lie it known that I, Inn Evnnn'r'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sayre, in the county of Bra lford and State of Penrk sylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Railway- Car-Coupler Uncoupling Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to produce an inexpensive, simple and eflicient railway car coupler uncoupling device and with this and minor objects in view, this invention consists in the parts and combination of parts as will be hereinafter more fully set out;
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a portion of the end of a car, with parts broken away, illustrating this uncoupling device in position.
Figure 2 is a view in end elevation of Figure 1. i
Figure 3 is a view in side elevation of Figure 2, partly in section, illustrating in dotted lines the uncoupling position.
Figures 4 and 5 are enlarged detail views in plan and end elevation respectively of the pin lever.
Figures .6 and 7 are enlarged detail views in end and side elevation respectively of the pin lever engaging end of the hand lever.
The car body is 01 any approved construction. The reference numeral 1 indicates the end sill, 2 brackets oi a standard make secured to the end sill, and 3 the coupler head secured to the car.
The hand lever at is journaled in the brackets 2 and retained therein by means or" filler blocks and cotter pins 5. The outer end of the lever 4 is deflected downwardly inside the corner plate 6 as at 7 tooa point below the under face of the end sill and thence outwardly toward the side of the car as at 8, thus forming a crank handle which may be operated either by the hand or foot of the train men to rotate the lever 4. V The inner end of the lever 4: is bent outwardly to form a crank 9 and then down wardly at right angles as at 10 w1th a vertical closed eye 1.1 on its lower end.
The locking pin lever 12 is of a diameter adapting its inner, portion to pass through the locking pin 13, the inner end of the lever being bent to form a hook 14 to prevent the lever t'roin becoming accidentally disengaged :t'roni the locking pin.
The outer end of the locking pin lever 12 may be flattened and bent to form a hook 15 which is adapted to engage the eye 11 of the hand lever as more clearly shown in Figure 1.
In the embodiment shown more clearly in Figures 4 and 5 the lever 12 is bent outwardly as at 16 thus forming a seat in which one side of the eye 11 is positioned when the lever is in the position as shown in Figure 1.
In use the locking pin 18 is raised from locked position by operating the crank on the outer end of the lever 4, thereby elevating the crank 9 which carries with it the locking pin lever to the position shown in dotted lines in Figure 3.
The connection between the pin lifter and the horizontally rotatable rod lies in a vertical plane and allows of the reciprocation of the coupler as in draft and bufiing, in a horizontal plane and has at all times a positive operating lifting connection upon actuation of the operating handle independent of the vertical relation of the coupler.
What I claim is:
l. A railway car coupler uncoupling device comprising a horizontally rotatable rod having an operating handle at one end and a crank having a downwardly bent portion terminating in a vertical eye at the other end, and a pin lever adapted to slidably engage the locking pin at one end and having a vertical flattened portion at the other end adapted to be engaged in the eye.
2. A railway car coupler uncoupling device comprising a horizontally rotatable rod having an operating handle at one end and a crank having a downwardly bent portion terminating in a vertical eye at the other end, and a pin lever adapted to slidably engage the locking pin at one end and having a vertical flattened portion at the other end having a hook at its extremity adapted to engage one side of the eye and an oil set portion terminating in'an eye at the other portion between the hook and the body end, and a pin lever adapted to slida bly 1 adapted to engage at the other side of the engage the lockingpin at one end and haveye. ing the other end adapted to operatively 3. A railway car coupler uncoupling deconnect it to the eye of said rod so that the vice comprising a horizontally rotatable rotation of said rod lifts said locking pin at rod having an operatinghandle at one end all times I and a crank having a downwardly bent IRAEVERETT.
