RUDOLBH HOFFMAN, F KANKAKEE, ILLINOIS,

nssIGNoa 'ro snails, Rona-ook .arm
C0., 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF NEW YOE:
Application led October 6, 1920. Serial No. 415,177."
To all whom imag-0mm.' i
Be it known that I, RUDOLPH HOFFMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kankakee, in the county of Kankakee and State of Illinois, have 'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cook Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates in general to cook stoves and more especially to the means for upon the stove.
The principal aim of the invention is to provide an improved built-in hinge construction vwhich is particularly adapted for use in a stove constructed of sheet metal in that swingably mounting the oven door vor doors- -it obviates the necessity of employing any castparts. v
A further object of the invention 1s to 1 provide a construction of simple character,
efiic'ent in operation, durable and( presenting a neat and ornamental appearance.
The objects 'of the invention thus generally stated, together with other andv ancillary advantages, are attained by the construction and arrangement shown in the accompanying drawings forming part hereof in which Fig. 1 is aperspec'tive view of a cook stove embodying the invention. ,Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view' through the stove and through the hinge at one side of one of the stove ovens. Fig. 3 isa fragmentary perspective view of the stove. frame to which the hinge is applied.
Fig. 4 isa fragmentary perspective view of the lower corner ofthe door embodying certain portionsof the hinge. Flg, 5 A1s. a
perspective view of Vone of the hinge plates detached. Fig. 6 is a vperspective view 'of a housing'for the hinge parts. Fig. 7 is a fragmentary sectional view through the oven door 'j amb and a portion of the hinge. Figs. 8 and 8a are fragmentary perspective vlews 'illustrating details of the hinge construction. Fig. 9 is a fragmentary transverse secltional view, showing in particular the location of the door counterbalancing means.
The stove to which the invention is herein shown as applied, comprises two superimposed ovens 8 and 9 each closed by means of .a door 10 andl mounted for swinging movement upon Jthe stove by means'of hinges designated generally 11'. The stove Vto which the'invention is particularly applicable, is
constructed almost wholly of sheet metal.A
Thus the oven section proper is made from sheet metal and has la forward frame 12 having an intermediate cross bar 13 dividlng the oven section into the two compartments providing the ovens 8 and9. The
oors 10 are also constructed' for the most part of sheetmetal as particularly set forth f lthedoors 10. If desired, these jambs may beshaped to provide rabbet grooves 18 for `the reception of the outer inner edges of the doors and thus-forman effective seal when the doors are in closed position.
The means for swingably mounting the doors 10 for the ovens 8 and 9 are the same in` both cases so that only one hinge 'construction need be described. Such constructioncomprises a hinge member 19 rigid with the door and a hinge plate 20 secured to 'the door frame.
The hinge member 19 consists vof a sleeve 21 mounted upon a projecting portion 22 of one of the reinforcing bars 17, herein the bar 'for the lower portion of the door frame 14. To this'end, the bar 17 vfor the side portion of said frame 14 is apertured as at 23 and through this aperture the portion 22 extends beyond the outer lchannel wall ,.15 ofthe door frame. Said portion 22 carries sleeve 21, the latter being made of an' internal diameter to fit snugly over the portion 22. The sleeve is retained in position by bending the portion 22 at right angles, providing-an arm 24 which preferably extends upwardlyin the closed posi- .tion of the door,` for a purpose which will later appear. fThe plate member 2O is secured tothe .side bar of the frame 12 of the oven, as.
by means of bolts 25, and is shaped to provide a bearing 26 fitting neatly over the sleeve 2 1 which latter constitutes a journal for the door.
For the purposeof counterbalancingthe weight of the door to prevent its suddendescent into its open position, I preferably provide spring means consisting of a coiled outer 'channel walls lll@ gas
i which secure "the ing the spring means externally of the ovenit is removed from the intense and consequent injurious heat of the oven. To permit of the swinging movement of the arm 24 inwardly beyond the frame 12, the latter is apertured as at 29, the plate member 20 of the hinge being also cut away as at 3Q for this purpose. Preferably the spring means for the door is so arranged that when the door is swung into its open position (broken lines Fig. 2) the arm will be swung into or slightly beyond dead center with referenceto the spring 27 so that in this position the spring vmeans shall not effect 'a closing of the door.
For the purpose of-limiting the downward swinging movement of the door the bars 17 at the sides of the door frame 14 are provided with downwardly' extending fingers.. 31. Each fingerA is adapted, as the door is swung into vits o'pen position, to enter aA slot 32 (Figs. 3 and 7) the upper wall of which is so arranged as to form a stop 33 with which the finger is adapted to engage when the door reaches its horizontal position.
For/the purpos'e of enclosing the hinge parts, I provide a housing 34 shaped to permit of the swinging movements of the arm 24 land of. suicientlength to enclose the hinge Aplate 20. Preferably the housing is secured in position by means of the'bolts 25 plate 20 in position on the frame 412. .l To facilitate the operation of the door from its closed to its open position and vice versa, it maybe provided, as is usual, with a handle 35 of any preferred construction.
Itwill be seen that I have produced a v builtsin hinge construction which may be constructed without the use of castings;v
which is of .a simple character so that it may be cheapl manufactured; which is eflcient in' operation, and which presents, a neat and ornamental appearance. Whilefthe invention isl herein set forth with considerable particularity, it is contemplated that various changes may be made in the details of construction a'nd arrangement without departing from the `spirit and scolpe of the invention as expressed `in the" owing claims.
I claim as my invention: 1. vIn agcook stove or the like. the combination with a door frame, of a door constructed of sheet metal and having aframev with a pair ofrelative'ly fiat lateral projecltions one at each side near the lower edge of the frame and rigid therewith, means at opposite sides of the stove frame forming bearings, and cylindrical lmembers on the outer ends of said projections forming journals adapted to engage in saidkbearmgs.
