Description

Non B3, B923.
M. BROWN INNERSOLE Filed June l0 1921 Patented Nev. 113 i923 earner casina.
MAX BBUWN, F BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
INNOLE.
Application led June 10, 1921. aerial No. 476,465.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, MAX BROWN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Boston, county of Suolk, Gommonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in lnnersoles, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters A'on the drawings representing like parts in each of the several views.
Ylhis invention relates to innersoles of vshoes and boots and more particularly to an improved composite innersole produced of a plurality. of layers oi' specially selected materials. A. principal object ot the invention is to provide an innersole that exhibits qualities of strength and insulation against moisture and cold in a high degree while being inexpensive and produced throughout of materials easily and cheaply obtained. The foregoing and other objects and advantages of the invention will more fully appear from the following detailed description, and the distinctive features of novelty will be pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure l is an elevation of an innersole embodying the invention with portions of the successive layers broken away to better show the interior construction;
Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof; and
Fig. 3 is an elevation of the innersole.
ln carrying out the invention l provide two layers 10, 11, kof a light or medium weight felt, preferably about atwenty pound grade. rlhese telt layers are saturated with asphaltum or a like waterproof `cementitious binder and they are pressed together with an intermediate layer 12 of stout burlap, the
to asphaltic coating ofthe felt la ers uniting firmly and strongly with the bres of the -burlap To the -outer yside of the burla layer 10 is applied a layer 13 of paper pre erably of a stout grade such as kraft paper.
ce r[his constitutes the outer side ot the inner sole. To the surface of the felt layer 11 a fleece lining layer 14 may be applied. rll`hese 1a ers when united and pressed together are allI held strongly by the adhesive bond of the' asphalt with which the felt layers 10, 11, are loaded, so that the innersole thus produced is a unitary mass, the several la, ers or lamin of which are strongly ad erent. Among the advantages of the composite innersole thus produced, are that the burlap with its stout crisscross threads imparts strength to hold the stitching in the assembling of the innersole, while the telt layers provide insulation against heat and cold, and the asphalt serves the double purpose of a cementitious binder and of providing complete insulation against moisture. 'llhe outer paper layer 13 protects the outer surface of the felt layer 10 and together with the eece lining 14 applied to the iayer 11, preventsany exposure of the asphalt coating as the innersoles are handled in the shoe shop. l am aware that the invention maybe embodiedin other specific terms without departing from 'the spirit or essential attributes thereo, and l therefore. desire the present embodiment to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference being had to the appended claims rather than to the foregoing description to indicate the scope of the invention.
nHaving described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to. secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An innersole comprising two asphaltsaturated layers of felt adhesively secured together with an intermediate loyer of burlap, to constitute a composite unitary inneri sole.
2. An innersole comprising two telt layers loaded with waterproof cementitious binder and adhesively secured thereby with an intermediate layer of strength giving burlalp or the like.
3. n innersole comprising a plurality o layers ofelt loaded with waterproof cementitious binder adhesively secured with an intermediate layer of strength giving burlap, and with protective layers applied to the outer surfaces ot said felt layers.
ln testimony whereoi', l have signed my name to this specilication.
BRWN.
