To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL R. JERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Somerville. in the county of Middle'sex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Eyeglass Beceptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in metal eye glass receptacles and has for its object to so form the metal members of a receptacle of th character mentioned that a lining secured upon the inner surface thereof and provided for the purpose of improving the appearance of the interior of the re ceptacle and also for preventing injury to the eye glasses located therein will be protccted around its edg in a manner to prevent said edge from becoming loosened and consequently detracting from the appearance of said receptacle.
In the manufacture of eye glass receptacles it has heretofore been the practice, so far as I am aware where the casing is constructed of metal, covered upon the exterior and lined upon the interior, to so form the main body member and cover therefor that when the lining is applied, that the edge of said lining is exposed, and under the constant handling which the receptacle receives, said lining soon becomes loosened, especially along that portion of the edge of th cover which is engaged by the fingers in raising said cover, and when said edge does start to loosen, if it is not repaired immediately, the edge becomes frayed, rolls inwardly and the entire interior of the casing resents such a bad appearance that a new receptrui-le is necessary.
It is the object, therefore, of'this invention to so form the body member and cover that when the lining is applied, the edge thereof will be protected in a manner to mak it impossible for the fingers to contact with said edge and thereby eliminate the beforcmentioned injurious consequences, while at the same time providing a receptacle of greatly increased strength.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the claims thereof.

Figure 1 is a plan view of an eye glass receptacle embodying the invention, a portion of the liningthereof being broken away to more clearly illustrate certain parts located therebeneath.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail section of a portion of the main body member as taken on the line 2- of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail section of a portion of the cover as taken on the line 33 of Fig. l.
Fig. a is a sectional view similar to Fig. 3 but illustrating a modified embodiment of the invention.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings, referring particularly to Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, 5 represents an eye glass receptacle having a body member 6 and a cover member 7, the latter being hinged t 8 in the usual well known manner to said body member. A spring 9 is secured at one end in anysuitable manner to the body member (3 and at its other end to the cover 7 and said spring acts to hold said cover closed upon the body member in the usual well known manner. The body member 6 is provided with a pocket 10 into which the lower portion of the ey glasses may project for the purpose of holding said glasses within the body member.
The body member 6 at the opposite sides thereof is provided with narrow inwardly,
turned flanges 11, while the cover 7 is provided with a similarly formed flange 12 which extends around three sides of said cover. The entire outer surface of the re ceptacle 5 is covered with covering 13 of suitable thin sheet material, preferably leather or a material resembling leather, said material being secured to said receptacle in any desired manner, but preferably said covering is secured adjacent to the edge portions of both the body member 6 and cover 7 by means of a suitable adhesive material. The edge portion of the material 13 adjacent to the flange 11 is folded around said flange at 14 and terminates beneath said flange as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2. The edge portion of the cover 13 adjacent to the flange 12 of the cover 7 is folded around the edge of said flange at 15 and terminates beneath said flange as clearly illustrated in 'Fig. 3. The interior of the receptacle 5 is covered with a single piece of lining material 16, preferably velvet, said l1n1ng be mg secured 1n any suitable manner to the inner surface of both the body member 6 and cover 7, but preferably a surface 17 located adjacent to the flange 11 of the body member 6 is secured to the latter by a. suitable adhesive material, and an edge portion 18 of said lining 16 abuts against that portion of the covering 18 which is located upon the under surface of the flange 11, while the exposed surface of said lining which is located adjacent to the flange 11 is located approximately flush with the edge of said flange. In like manner a portion 19 of the surface of the lining 16 located within the cover T extending around the edge of said cover adjacent to the flange 12 thereof is secured to said cover by a suitable adhesive material. and an edge portion 20 of said lining abuts against that portion of the covering 13 which is located upon the inner surface of said flange 12 and the exposed surface of said lining adjacent to the flange 12 is located approximately flush with the edge of said flange. By securing the edge portions 18 and 20 of the lining 16, as hereinbefore described, there are no edge portions of said lining left exposed where contact therewith by the fingers in handling the receptacle can act to loosen said edges from either the body member (3 or the cover 7. the result being that the life of the recep.
tacle is greatly prolonged, while at the same time the flanges 11 and 12 greatly increase the strength of the receptacle.
In Figure at I have illustrated a modified embodiment of the invention in which 21 represents a portion of a cover constructed of a suitable metal. as, for example. silver or aluminum, which does not require an outside covering. The cover 21 is provided with an inwardly turned flange 22 formed similar to the flange 12 hereinbefore described. A lining 23 of suitable material is secured to the inner surface of the cover 21, as by an edge portion 2% thereof being stuck to the inner surface of said cover by a suitable material and an edge 25 of said lining abuts against the inner surface of said flange 22 in such a manner as to protect said edge. In this instance. the exposed. surface of the lining 23 is located approximately flush with the edge of said flange and it is, therefore, impossible for the fingers to accidentally loosen said edge during the ordinary handling of the receptacle.
lVhile I have illustrated and described both the body member 6 and cover member 7 as being provided with flanges upon their respective edge portions for-the purpose of protecting the edge of the lining, a satisfactory receptacle may be provided if the cover only is provided with a flange to protect the lining for the reason that normally it is the edge of that portion of the lining which is located within the cover which receives the hardest usage and is the most liable to become loosened, and it is submitted that such a construction is not only within the spirit of the invention, but also falls within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. An eye glass receptacle comprising, in combination, a body member, a cover member. one of said members being provided with a flange at the edge thereof, a covering for the outer surface of said members, said covering extending over the flange of said flanged member and terminating upon the inner side of said member and a lining for said members, the edge of said lining withi said flanged member abutting against the portion of the covering located upon the inner face of said flange.
2. An eye glass receptacle comprising, in combination, a body member, a cover mem her. one of said members being provided with a flange at the edge thereof, a covering for the outer surface of said members, said covering extending over the flange of said flanged member and terminating upon the inner side of said member and a lining for said members, the edge of said lining within said flanged member abutting against the portion of the covering located upon the inner face of said flange and the exposed surface of said lining adjacent to said flange being approximately flush with the edge of said flange.
