a T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL THOMAS NALKUP, citizen of the United States, and resident of NewYork city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have in vented certain new and useful Car Doors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in a car door, and particularly to such a door of an elevated or Subway railway car, and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide electrical means for opening or closing a door of a railway car.
A. further object of my invention is to provide electrical means for opening or closing a railway car door from a station platform.
My invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings forming part of this ap plication.
Fig. 1, is a diagrammatic view of a usual elevated city railway car with means for opening or closing a door or gate.
Fig. 2, is a detail of electrical means for opening or closing a door of a car.
Fig. 3, is a diagrammatic view of a usual subway city railway car' with sliding door and of means for opening or closing said door.
Fig. 4, is a detail of a sliding car door operating means.
1 is a railway car, and 1 and 1 are adjoining cars, 22 are doors or gates of the cars rigidly mounted on vertical shafts 4, which extend through the platform of the car. To the lower end of shaft l, at tacheda short arm 20 on which link 19 is slidably'mounted. Link 19 is pivoted to 17 the core of a solenoid 3, which when energized opens the door or gate as shown at dotted line, 2, and when it is de-energized, expansion spring 18 returns core 17 to nor mal position and closes door or gate 2. Solenoid 3, is caused to open the door or gate by an operator, located preferably on the platform of a station directly alongside a railway car, by pressing button 14. against resistance spring 15, into contact with conductor 16, thereby making an electric circuit through wire 13, third electric rail 10, shoe 6. wire 7 with resistance, solenoid 3, wire 8, shoe 5, fourth rail conductor 9, wire 13 which'is attached to push button 14.
'When the operator releases spring' push button 14, the solenoid is' de-energized and BX.
pansion spring 18 returns the core of sole noid to normal position which causes door or gate to be closed. 7
A, illustrates a subway car with sliding doors BB. A? and A are adjoining cars.
G is a rack attached to door B and'meshed with gear D operated by worm E .mounted on rotor of motor F, attached to the bottom of the railway car. An operator preferably on platform 0, alongside the car, pushes button S, closin an electric circuit through resistance wire third electric rail K, shoe J, wire M with resistance at T, .motor F, wire N, shoe G, fourth rail H, wire R attached to push button S. It is obvious that the car door is'closed or opened according to direction of rotation of rotor of motor,
and that it is desirable to use a reversible ficing its principal advantages.
lVhat I claim is new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a track and a car conductor bar alongside the track at a station, a power rail alongside the track to furnish electric driving energy, shoes making contact with said bar and rail, respectively, and carried by the car, an electrically actuated device for operating the door, con
ductors connecting said'device to both said bar and rail through said shoes, a conductor leading back from the bar to the power rail, and a manual switch in the circuit through said device.
thereon provided with a door, of a fixed 2. The combination witha track and car thereon provided with a door, of a solenoid for operating thedoor in'one direction, a spring for moving the door in the contrary direction, conductors making circuit through said solenoid from a com mon third power rail and back to the latter,
and a manually operable switch interposed. in the circuit.
3. The combination with a track, a power' rail alongside the track, a fixed conductor bar alongside the track at stations, a car upon the'tr'ack carryin shoes imposition to make Contact with both said rail and b'ar,respectively, an electrical door opening 'device connected with "both said shoes, a conductor leading back from said bar to said rail, and a manually operable switch in said conductor.
4. The combination with a railway track and power rail and conducting bar parallel thereto, a car upon the track provided with shoes in position to make contact with the rail and bar, respectively, an electrical car door actuating device, conductors for niing a circuit "from said rail "through said device and bar back to said rail, and a manual switch fixed at astat-ion and arranged to open and close said circuit.
In Witness whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
SAMUEL THOMAS WALKUP. Witnesses:
A. F. WO TMAN, FREDERICK 'STii'FFENs.
