which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an adding ma chine which includes a carriage carrying a J rotary platen, and adapted to be automatically reciprocated endwise, as in a so-called shuttle machine, when such reciprocatlon is desired, the type of machine to which the invention relates being well known under the name of the ales adding machine.
A machine of this type includes well known mechanism whereby the machine may be converted from an adding to a non-adding machine, and vice versa. In the Wales machine this conversion is effected by the simple operation of shifting a d changing the height of a convertlng cross shaft which is adapted, when shifted downwardly, to render the adding mechanism operative, and, when shifted upwardly, to render the adding mechanism inoperative, the machine being operable in one case to print and add, and in the other case to print without adding. In Figures 1 and 1 I show the usual converting shaft 8, through the shifting of which the machine is converted from an adding to a non-adding machine, and vice versa, said shaft and the mechanism (not shown) with which it cooperates being well known elements of the Wales adding machine. Since my invention is embodied in the mechanism hereinafter described, for shifting theshaft 8, I do not deem it neces sary to show and describe the elements with which said shaft cooperates.

The mechanism in which the present i.n vention is embodied, is organized to cause the machine to add when the platen is at one end of its reciprocating movement, and is in position to permit the printing of figures on the edge portion of the record sheet, at the right hand of the operator, and to render the machine incapable of adding when the platen is at the opposite end of its reciprocating movement, and in position to permit the printing of figures on the portion of the sheet at the left hand of the operator. To accomplish this result the carriage cam 16 is provided at one end with a segmental cam 67, arranged to contact with, and displace a trundle-roll 68, constituting an element of mechanism for swinging the latch-arm w to either of the positions shown by Figures 1 and 1*. Said ,mechanism, as here shown, includes a movable bearing piece 69 at the upper side of the base plate 12, carrying the roll 68, a slide 70, at the lower side of the base plate, and rigidly connected with the bearing piece by a rivet 71, which is movable in a slot (not shown) in the base plate,
the bearing piece 69 and slide 70 being guided by studs 72 and 73, fixed to the base plate and passing through slots 72 and 73*.
spring 80, attached at one end to the slide, and at its opposite end to a stud adjustably connected with the lower end of the lever 79. Said lever is pivoted at 81 to a fixed ear 82, on the frame d, and its upper end is connected by a link 83 with the swinging end of the latcharm w. The function of the spring 80 is to press the roller 68 toward the axis of the carriage cam 16, and hold it in the path of the cam .67. I provide means, however, for rendering the spring inoperative to perform this function, said means being embodied in a rotatable member 84, journaled in the lower end of the upright lever 7 9, and carrying the pin 80 with which the spring is connected, said member having a knurled knob 85 by which it may be turned to locate the pin 80, either in the position shown by Figures 2, 3 and 8, to exert tension on the spring 80, and render it operative, or in the position shown by Figure 4-, to slacken the spring and render it inoperative; A stop pin 86, on the. lever 79, cooperates with a stop finger 87 on the member 84, in main taining tension on the spring.
It will now be seen that when the spring 80 is operative. contact of the cam 67 with the roll 68 will cause the latch arm 10 to swing forward to the position shown by Figurel, and hold up the converting shaft- 8 in the non-adding position, and that when the cam 67 recedes from the roll 68. the
spring 80 moves the latch arm to permit the shafts to drop to its adding position. When the spring; is made inoperative, as indi cated by Figure 4:, the latch arm remains in the position shown by Figure l.
I claim:
1. An adding machine comprisingin comhination a platen carriage, means including a step-by-step rotated carriage cam, and a lever cooperating therewith to reciprocate the carriage, a shiftable converting shaft adapted to occupy either an adding or a nonadding position, a latch detachably engageable with the converting shaft to support the latter, and automatic means actuated by the rotation of the carriage cam for disengaging the latch from the converting shaft.
2. An adding machine con'iprisingr in combination a platen carriage, means including a step-bystep rotated carriage cam, and a lever cooperating therewith to reciprocate the carriage, a shitftahle converting shaft adapted to occupy either an adding or a non-adding position, a latch detachably engageablo with the converting; shaft to support the latter, automatic means actuated by the rotation of the carriage cam for disengaging the latch from the converting" shaft, and manually operable means for rendering said automatic means inoperative.
3. An adding machine comprising in combination a platen carriage, means including a step-by-step rotated carriage cam, and a lever cooperating thert-zwith to reciprocate the carriage, a. shiftable converting shaft adapted to occupy either an adding or a non adding position, a latch arm adapted to maintain said shaft in its non-adding position, and automatic means actuated by the rotation of the carriage cam for movinc' said latch arm to and from its operative position.
4-. An adding machine comprising; in com bination a platen carriage, means including a step-by-step rotated. carriage cam, and a lever cooperating therewith to reciprocate the carriage, shiftable converting; shaft adapted to occupy either an adding or a non-adding position, a latch arm adapted to maintain. said shaft in its non-adding position, a segmental cam on the carriage ain, an 'lmechanism intermediate of the segmental cam and the latch arm for imparting movement from the cam to'the latch arm to shift the latter to and from its operative position.
5. An adding machine comprising in (70311- binatiou a platen carriage, means including a step-hy-step rotated. carriage cam, and a lever cooperating therewith to reciprocate the carriage, a shiftahle converting shaft adapted to occupy either an adding or a non-adding position, a latch arm adapted to maintain said shaft in its non-adding po sition, a segmental cam on the carriage cam inechan'sm intermediate of the segmental cam and the latch arm for imparting nioi'eient from the c in. to the latch arm to shift the latter to and from its operative position, and manually operable means for rendering said intermediate mechanism inoperative.

8. An adding machine comprising in combination, a rotary platen; a. movable carriage therefor; norn'ially operable mechanism including a hand lever for rotating the platen sttm-by-step. and carringe-reciprocating mechanism including a carriage cam, a lever oscillated by said cam, a lever-eng a ing in mher on the carriage, a gear coaxial with the cam and independently rotatable, one-way rotating connections between the coaxial gear and the cam, and means for reversely rotating the coaxial gear including a gear reversely rotated by the hand lever, and an intermediate gear.
