ADJUSTABLE BAND.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I KNUT E. ENGLUND, a citizen of the Unite 'States, and residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Bands, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to adjustable bands and particularly to devices of this class designed for use in securing suitably flexible or other tubings in connection with suitable supports, and the object of the invention is to provide a device of the class specified which is so constructed as to permit of the mounting of said band in connection with a suitable support by hand, and by the use of a suitable tool, such as a screw driver, when excess pressure is required; a further object being to provide improved means for retaining the separate parts or end portions of the band together and for reinforcing and strengthening one end portion of the band; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a band of the class and for the purpose specified which is simple in construction, efiicient in use, and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts 0 my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Fig. 1 is a transverse sectional View through a flexible tubing mounted on a suitable support, and indicating the method of mounting one of my improved bands thereon.

Theinvention shown and described herein is an improvement on that shown and described in a patent granted to me on the 2nd day of May, 1922, No. 1,414,731 in which a tool of spec1fic construction was employed for coupling the end portions of the band together. The present invention relates to a band of the class under consideration which is so constructed asto avoid the necessity of the use of a specific tool and in connection with which a screw driver or similar tool may be used for the purpose of securing the end portions of the band together.
For the purpose of illustratin one use of my improvement, I have shown in Figs. 1 to 4, a part of a pipe 10 on which is mounted a rubber tubing or hose 11 which is secured on thepipe by one of my improved bands 12. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, the band 12 com rises two ring members 13 closed or .joined shownat 14 and said end portion of the band is provided with a plurality of spaced teeth or projections 15, which are substantially arc-shaped in form in cross section and which are formed by roviding a number of transverse cuts in t e band 12 or the end portion 14 thereof, and pressing one edge of said end portion adjacent to each cut outwardly to form the teeth or projections 15. It will be noted that the teeth or p-rojections 15 are joined to the body of the end portion 14 of the band through sections of substantially the same area as the width of said teeth or projections to form a strong and durable projecting member. The other end portions of the ring members 13 are open and are joined and reinforced by a transverse plate or clip member 16 preferably of greater thickness than the material employed in the band 12 and the end portions of the ring members 13 are secured to the plate or clip member 16 by welding, riveting, or in any other desired manner.
The plate or clip member 16 is provided with a downwardly or inwardly directed and preferably pointed lip or flange 17 which overlaps the ends of the ring members 13, and the lip or flange 17 is adapted to interlock .with the teeth or projections 15 to securely hold the end portions of the band together. The plate or clip member 16 is at one end as also provided with an upwardly or outwardly directed part 18 which forms a finger piece to facilitate the attachment of the band to a suitable support by hand, and to also form a bearing against which a suitable tool may be placed and operate in moving the plate or clip member into position to engage the teeth or projections 15.
It will also be noted that the end portion 14 of the band is provided with projecting members 19 which are adapted to extend beneath the other end portion of the band or the ring members 13 to form a continuous annular compression body of said band, when mounted on a suitable support, and the members 19 are preferably slightly tapered. t
In the use of my improved-band 12 as shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, it will be noted that the band is applied to the tubing 11 by hand, which result is accomplishedby pressure of the thumb upon thepro ectmg part 18 of the member 16 and 1t stronger pressure is required for securely sealing the connection between the tubing 11 and the pipe 10, a screw driver or other tool is placed beneath the member 16 and in engagement with one of the teeth'or projections 15 beneath such member as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, after which the screw driver or other tool is moved to the ri ht to advance the end portion of the ban 12-, provided with the member 16, longitudinally of the other end portion thereof so that the lip or flange 17 will engage another tooth or projection as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing and this operation will be repeated until the band 12 has been securely wrapped around the tubing 11. In order to remove the band, all that is necessary to do'is to place a screw driver or other tool beneath the end portion of the band provided with the clip member 16 to pry the same u wardly and the end portions of the band Wlll then spring apart.
In Fig. 5 of the drawing, I have shown a slight modification of the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive in which I substitute for the plate or clip member 16., a similar part 20 which is formed integral with the end portion of the band by folding said end portion backwardly upon the band, and fashioning the folded part 21 to form a lip 17 similar to the lip 17 in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, and the part 18 is formed from the free end portion of the band. In this construction, the band 12 is also made solid instead of being provided with the separate ring member 13, and an aperture 22 is provided in the band in juxtaposition to the part 18 to permit of the insertion of a screw driver or other tool. The other end portion of the band will be of the same construction as shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive.
In Fig. 6 of the drawing, I have shown another modification in which the part 18 is formed by cutting a section 23 from a solid band and bending it upwardly and downwardly and this operation forms an aperture 24 in the band 1n juxtaposition to the part 18, the same as in Fig. 5 of the drawing. With this construction, the free end portion of the band is bent downwardly to form the lip or flange 17.
The construction shown in Fig. 7 is prac tically the same as that shown in Fig. 6 with the exception that the part 18 is formed by pressing or fashioning the material of the band outwardly to form said part and in this construction, an aperture 25 is also provided in juxtaposition to the part 18, and the free end portion of the band is proyided with a lip 17 as in Fig. 6 of the drawmg.
In all of the forms of construction shown, the part 18 of the band serves as a finger piece and backing against which a suitable tool may operate in mountingthe band in a suitable support, and this structure also serves to reinforce and strengthen the band at this point and it will be noted that the parts 18 in Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawing will be riveted, welded or otherwise secured together. It will be noted that my invention is not necessarily limited to the specific use herein set out as the same may be used for many other purposes and constructed of lighter or heavier material, depending upon the us to which the band is to be adapted and while I have shown certain details of construction for carrying my invention into efl'ect, it will be noted that I am not necessarily limited to these details and various changes therein, and modifications thereof may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

1. A unitary sheet metal band of the class described, one end portion of which is provided with a plurality of spaced projecting elements and the other end portion of the band being provided at its end with an in-. wardly projecting lip formed from the material of said band and adapted to pass over the projecting elements on the other end portion of the band, and to engage one of said elements for securing said end portions together.
2. A unitary sheet metal band of the class described, one end portion of which is provided with a plurality of spaced projecting elements and the other end portion of the band being provided at its end with an inwardly projecting lip formed from the ma terial of said band and adapted to pass over the projecting elements on the other end portion of the band, and to engage one ofssaid elements for securing said end portions together, and said band being prov ded ad acent to the last named end portion thereof with an aperture through which a suitable tool may be passed for moving said last named end portion longitudinally of the othenend portion of the band.
3. A unitary sheet metal band of the class described, one end ortion of which is provided with a plura ity of spaced projecting elements and the other end portion of the band being provided at its end with an inwardly projecting lip formed from the material of said band and adapted to pass over the projecting elements on the other end portion of the band, and to engage one of said elements for securing said end portions together, and said last named end portion of the band being provided with an outwardly projecting part by means of which said end portion may move longitudinally of the other end portion.
4. A unitary sheet metal band of the class described comprising a metal strip, one end portion of which is provided with a plurality of spaced projecting teeth formed bv pressing predetermined portions of the strip outwardly and the other end portion of the strip being provided with an integral inwardly projecting lip adapted to engage the projecting teeth on the other end portion of said strip.
5. A unitary sheet metal band of the class described comprising a metal strip, one end portion of which is provided with a plurality of spaced projecting teeth formed by pressing predetermined portions of the strip outwardly, and the other end portion of the strip being provided with an inwardly projecting lip adapted to engage the projectlng teeth on the other end ortion of said strip, and said last named end portion of the band being provided with an outwardly projecting integral part.
6. A unitary sheet metal band of the class described comprising a metal strip, one end portion of which is provided with a plurality of spaced projecting teeth formed by pressing predetermined portions of the strip outwardly, and the other end portion of the strip being provided with an inwardly projecting lip adapted to engage the projecting teeth on the other GIId POItIOII of said strip, and said last named end portion of the band being provided with an outwardly projecting part, adjacent to which said end portion of the strip is apertured.
7. A unitary sheet metal band of the class described comprising a metal strip, one end portion of which is provided with a plurality of spaced projecting teeth formed by pressing predetermined portions' of the strip outwardly, and the other end portion of the strip being provided with an inwardly projecting lip adapted to engage the projecting teeth on the other end portion of said strip, and'said last named end portion of the band being provided with an outwardly projecting part, adjacent to which said end portion of the strip is apertured, and the first named end portion of the stri being adapted to be overlapped and he d in position by the last named end portion thereof.

11. A band of the class described. one end portion of which is provided with a plurality of spaced projecting teeth formed by pressing predetermined portions of the band outwardly, and'the width of said teeth being substantially the same throughout their length, and the other end portion 'of the band being provided with an inbetween the end portions of said band into which a suitable tool may be placed to engage one of said .teeth to advance the last named end portion of the band longitudinally of the other end portion thereof, and' said last named end portion of the band being provided with an outwardly projecting part, adjacent to which the band is apertured.
12. A band of the class described, one end portion of which is provided with a plurality of spaced projecting teeth formed by pressing predetermined portions of the band outwardly, the other end portion of the band being rovided with an inwardly projecting-lip a apted to engage the projecting teeth on the other end portion of said band, and said last named end portion of the band being provided with an outwardly projecting part, adjacent to which the band is apertured.
