IMPROVEMENT IN RAILWAY-RAIL JOINTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,270, dated February 10, 1874; application filed November 22, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLPHUS J OIINSON, of Uhricksville, county of Tuscarawas and State of Ohio, have invented certain Improvements in Rail-Joints for Railways.
The following description, taken in connection with the accompanying plate of drawings hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification, wherein are set forth the nature and principles of the invention, by which the same may be distinguished from others of a similar class, together with such parts thereof as are claimed as new and are desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States.
My invention relates to that class of fastenings or couplings which are made use of for connecting the joints of rails; and the nature thereof consists in certain improvements in the same, hereinafter shown.
In the accompanying drawing, which i1lintrates my invention and forms a part of the specification thereof, Figure l is a side elevation of the rails with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal horizontal section taken in the line a a, Fig. 1.
In the said drawing, A A designate two rails to be secured together, in each of which are cut oblong apertures, through which pass the wedges B and the key-pieces O. D indicates fish-bars, secured to each side of the rails, and provided with apertures for the reception of the said wedges and key-pieces, which are secured together by the pins (7, which fit in receptacles formed by cutting semieylindrical slots in the same, as shown in Fig. 2. In the key-pieces are cut the slots h, the sides of which are beveled, so that when the wedges. c are driven in the key-pieces are caused to tighten against the fish-bars. The apertures in the rails are larger than the apertures in the fish-bars, in order to give the rails an opportunity to expand.
Having described my invention, I claim- The combination of the rails, fish-bars, keypieces, wedge-pieces, and pins, all operating together as described.
