To all whom t mag/'concerne' y Y Be it known that I, `CHAME D. SKINNER, a' citizen of ,the United States, residing at New Kensington, in the county of Westmoreland and `State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain'new and useful Improvements in Fare-Recording Mechanism, of'

which the following` is a `speciiication.-

My invention consistsof an improvement in railroad fare mechanism, and isparticularly designed to provide means for registering or recording the fare of each passenger, providing a visible indicator `and check, with means preventing unauthorized access to collectedor deposited tickets, etc.` The device in certain preferred forms is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which: Y

Referring to Sheet 1, a main rectangular casing 2 is mounted on top` of a seat back A and contains a collecting drawer 3. Above the casing 2 is a top 4, hinged at 5 at one end and adapted to be locked by lockV 6 of the drawer at the other end. Upon unlocking, the drawer may be drawn out by its end handle 7 or the top may be swung upwardly on its hinge. 4

Each ticket receiving space l hasa sepa rately actuated opening and closing bottom 11 hinged to partition 10 at 12 and provided with a lever v13. Said lever is'connected by link 14:, pivoted'at 15, and at 16 toj'operating rod 17 extending vup through the top and provided ,with an operating button 18. By lifting rod 17, the trap door orbottom 111 is lowered to deliver the ticket e into the drawer 3, the door then being closed by thrusting the rod downwardly. Any suitable ticket may be used, but -I preferably usek one like that of Fig. 6, divided on the perforated or dotted 'line y, y.

-In use, the `conductor will take up the ticket from the passenger, -remove the right hand coupon f, and give it back to him, as a receipt. The left hand portion, bearing the destination, is then dropped throughthe f slot 19 of top 9, into the cavity? d, resting'on .the trap door 11,belowthe" top :9, v

and thus in visible position inside the par# ticular cavity d; The ticketV will remain in such'position until the passenger has reached his destination, when it may be dropped by the conductor into drawer 3, the device then being ready for another operation.

If desired, a clip 20 may be attached to the top of each cavity d, for temporarily holding the coupon f in convenient position.

The device, as above explained, is for separate use, and may, of course, be provided with one, two, or three ticket cavities d at each side of its longitudinal center, for use and observation from either side, depending on the arrangement of the seat backs A for travel in either direction.

I have. shown on Sheet 2 means for col-- lecting the contents of a series of collecting boxes, one series at each side of the aisle g of car G, and comprising a box for each seat. The boxes themselves are of the same general construction just described, but, instead of a drawer 3, the lower casing is formed as a common conduit 21 leading downwardly into a vertical chute 22. Such chute is located in convenient position at the end of each seat, for use with the seat back in either position, and each chute leads VVby which the several tickets may be delivered to .p a terminal Areceiving receptacleV '24 V,having a lock-controlleddoor ordrawer 25. *A conveyor belt 26 mounted onterminal vides for carrying f all of the tickets to- Wards one end and delivering them into the receptacle 24, for collection.`

Where three-cavity units are provided, the'capacity of each `double ,seat and one aisle or standing passenger is capable of being recorded, so that the maximum capacity of a car may be always counted. The device avoids the necessity of remembering the several Vindividual passengers of a car,.(thus greatly relieving and 'simplifying the work ofthe conductor, and at the same time ensuring against carrying `any pas- Senger beyond 'his destination, or permitting any dispute as to `payment of fare.
