Be it known that I, JOSEPHVSHUBERT, a citizen of Poland, having first papers for United States citizenship; and resident of Braddock, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wheeled Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wheeled toys and more particularly to a manually prop l d h led oy ha n e p l-?an s of an aeroplane, and has for one of its objects the provision of a toy of this character that will be provided with suitable driving mechanism adapted to be operated by the operator@ feet and an improved and novel steering mechanism. v
A still furtherobject it to provide a toy of the character described having the novel combination, Construction and design of parts described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan of a toy constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure. 1 is a fragmentary top plan of the forward end of the toy, partly broken away to show the propeller driving mechanism and other working parts.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the toy.
Figure 3 is a front elevation of the toy.
Figure 4 is a rear elevation of the toy.
Referring more particularly to the drawings the numeral 1 designates the body o-f the-toy as a whole, which is in the form of a narrow bar and has a pair of outwardly lowered forward legs 3-3 in which is journaled a tractor wheel aXle 7 having supporting tractor wheels 8 secured thereto. A supporting and steering wheel 16 is mounted on an axle 17 journaled in suitable bearings in thelower end of a post 13 pivotally mounted in the body 1 adjacent its rear end. A seat 10 is also secured on the body 1.
A pair of wing members 40 and 43, held in vertical spaced relation by uprights 42, are secured to the body l adjacent its forward end and project laterally -therefrom.
A substantially rectangular casing 30 having a mesh front wall is secured to the forward end of the body and resembles a radiator such as used on some forms of aeroi planes.
A cross bar 5 is arranged between the legs 3 intermediate their ends to stiffen them and also to form a support for the forward end of? a bar 6 which parallels the body bar 1 and serves to support a crank shaft 18. The rear end of the bar 6 is supported on a bracket 6 secured to the under side of the o b r he cr nk h f-t r t es pe l 8 a each end adapted to be operated by the occupant of the seat 10` to propel the toy. A sprocket 19 is secured on the crank shaft 18 and is connected to a s'procket 19? on the aXle 7 by a drive chain 20 to transmit the power from the crank shaft 18 to the axle 7.
A rearwardly inclined steering post or column 24 extends through and is journaled in the body bar l and is provided with a hand wheel 21 at its upper end. A short transverse bar 25 is secured to and projects outwardly from one side of the steering post adjacent its lower end. A second transverse bar 27 is mounted in a suitable aperture in the wheel post' 13 and extends outwardly at each side thereof. A connecting rod 26 eX- tends between the bars 25 and 27 and is pivotally connected to each.
A rudder member 47 is pivotally mounted on a bracket member 45 extending froni the rear end of the body bar l. cross bar 47 is secured in spaced relation to the lower or bottom face of the rudder 47 and a connecting rod 46 extends and bar 47 and is pivotally connected to each of the bars. It will thus. be apparent that any movement of the steering post or column 24 will be transmtted to the wheel 16 and rudder 47 so as to cause a simultaneous movement of the wheel 16 and rudder 47.
A brake drum 29 is mounted on the axle 7 adjacent one of the legs 3, and a brake band 29 is mounted around the drum 29 and adapted to be operated by a pedal bar 28 between the bar 27' oof which extends rearwardly into aposition readily accessible by the operator-s foot.
The operation of the toy will be readily understood. The operator will be seated in the seat lO and will operate the pedals is by his feet, thns propellng 'the tractor wheels 8 by means of the drive connection consisting ot' sprockets l9 and 19 and chain 20. i
As the tractor wheel axle T is rotatedthe propeller 36 will be caused to smultaneously rotat e due to the drive connection consisting of pulleys 39, 32 belt 38, counter-shirit 32 and beveled gears 33 and 34.
The toy is readily steered by the operator turning the hand wheel 21 on the steel-ing post or column 2% in the usual manner, which 'post is connected to the single rear steering wheel 16 and rndder 17 as hereto-' fore described.
I claim 2-- A riding toy in the form 'of an aeroplane comprising a body portion having a seat intermediate its ends, wings projecting laterally from said body adjacent its forward end, a rudder member pivotally mounted at the rear end of said body, a
par of combined supporting and tractor wheels mounted on an aXle journaled in downwardly extending legs adjacent the forward end of saidbody, a single combined supporting and steering wheel mounted on a pivoted post adjacent the rear end of said body, means connecting said post and said rudder member to cause nnson o' movement thereof, a propeller wheel mounted on a horizontal sha'l't journaled in the forward end of said body, a erank shaft jonrnaled in said body at a point below said seat and intermediate the seat and the tractor wheels, pedals on said crank shaft to provide for the rotation of said shaft by the operator when in the seat, a sprocket on said crank shaft, a second sprocket on said tractor wheel aXle, an endless drive chain trained over said sprockets, a countershaft journaled in said body and geared to said horizontal propeller shaft, a exible driving connection between said tractor wheel said countershaft, a steering post positioned forward of said seat and adapted to be Controlled by the operator, and a rigid connecting rod pivotally connected to said steering post and said pivoted steering wheel post, all substantally as shown and i'or the purposes described.
