The invention has for its principal object to provide improved devices for effecting the tilting of the body selectively in the manner described and more particu-r larly to provide a four-point bearing and hinge support for the body with devices co-operating with Isuch bearing supports/'as will enable any two of them to be locked as hinge points while the other two are lfree for the tilting of the bodyin so far as may be' necessary. to eiect the .tilting towards one sidelor the other or towards the rear. In Carr ing out thisobject of the invention the body is provided with ball and socket joints at four remote points which are adapted lto be locked selectively in pairs to the wagon frame for the purpose of permitting the dumping operations described above. A feature of the invention, however, is that while the supporting joints are locked selectively in pairs, they are, as a matter of fact, connect-ible to and disconnectible from the frame as individual units.
A second object of the invention is to provide in a dumping wagon of the character described power operated devices for tilting the body and controlling means therefor which are positively locked against movement so long as the control elements of the supporting joints for the body are in certain predetermined positions.

vIn the illustrated embodiment the dumppieces 5 andv ball pieces 6 'retained therein by closing rings 8. The ball pieces 6 arepreferably formed with `flat webs 9 adapted to rest on upright supports 7= carried lwith the transverse sills-2. --lVith-in-eachof the. ball pieces 6 and overlying the-'web 9 is` mounted a locking key 11 of a length less than the length of a slot 10 formedf within the web 9 but greater than the width of said slot. This key 11 can be rotated to register with the slot 10 so that the ball piece 6 can be moved from its support 7 or the key can be rotated to extend across said slot and lock the ball piece on such support. Each of the points of support I, II, III, IV, for the body 1 is constructed in the manner described so that it will he clear that the body is supported by four hinge joints which are separately connectible to and disconnectible from the supporting frame of the vehicle.
One feature of the invention resides in hand operated means of a convenient character for locking the supporting joints selectively to the frame in pairs for the purpose of permitting the body to be tilted to one side or the other or to the rear as ma be desired. Such devices include for eacbV supporting joint a rotatable spindle 12 on which the key 11 is carried, journaled in the support 7 and having at bevel pinion 13 engaged by a bevel pinion 14 on the end of a transversely extending shaft l5 supported within the sill 2. As indicated most clearly in Figure 7 the front joints I, II have shafts 15 which canconvenientlybe alined'but which are independent of one another, and Figure 3 indicates that the rear joints III, IV have their shafts in similar relation.
Referring now to Figure 9 it appears that on the inner end of the operating shaft 15 for the points .I, II, III, IV are secured swinging arms 48, 49, 50 and 51, respectively. The lower ends of these swinging arms 48, 49 are engaged operatively lwith a groove 45 in-a collar 43 secured to a shifter rod 38, while the lower ends of the swinging arms 50, 51 are engaged operatively with a groove 55 in a locking segment 53 through which the shaft 38 extends slidably. The collar 43 is interrupted to receive a locking segment 52 having a groove 54 in line with the groove 4,5, the segmentv 52 being loosely supported on the shaft 38. The locking segment 53 is vinterrupted to receive a segmental collar 44 which isl secured tothe shaft 38 and is formed with a groove 46 in line with the. groove 55. Accordingly, it'will be clear that when the arms 48,.. 49 are engaged with the collar 43 the two shafts 15 controlling the respective keys 1-1 of the front bearing joints I,'II will be rocked upon axial movement of the shaft 38. With the shaft 38 in this angular position the lowel ends of the arms l50,51 will be locked against movement by the segment 53, so that the keys 11 for the rear supporting joints'` III, IV cannot be released. Under these circumstances the body is in condition for rearward tilting. If, now, the shaft 38 be rocked in a counterclockwise direction, as shown in Figure v10, the lockmg segment 52 will be engaged with the rlower end of the swinging arm 48 while the arm 49 willremain in operative engagement with the collar 43. Axial movement of the shaft 38 will thereupon cause the arm 49 to swing for actuation .of its shaft 15 for the key 11 Aof the bearing II, while the other arm 48 with its associated elements will be locked against movement. Meanwhile the lower end of the arm 51 will be found engaged with the collar 44 while the lower end of the arm 50 will be found locked by the segment 53. This condition will bring about unlocking of the two right hand supporting joints II, IV, as viewed in Figure 3, while the two left joints I, III, will be held locked to the frame. In that condition the body can be tilted for dumping to the left as shown in Figure 4. If, now, it be desired to tilt the body to the right, as indicated in dotted lines in Figure 4, the shaft 38 will be rocked in a clockwise direction, as viewed in Figure 9, for the purpose of engaging the locking segment 52 with the lower end of the arm 49 and the locking segment 53 with the arm 51. Meanwhile the arm 48 will remain engaged with the collar 43 and the arm 5.0 will be engaged with thecollar 44. Axial-movement of the shaft 38 will thereupon swing the arms 48 and 50 to unlock the two left hand joints I, III, while the arms 49, 51 will be locked against movement by the segments 52, 53.
A further feature of the invention, which will be found of especial convenience in motor vehicles, resides in the provision of a convenient hand lever for controlling the shaft 38, adapted to be mounted within convenient reach of the drivers seat. This lever is shown at 29 and gaged operatively with the operating rod 38. One convenient means for affording this engagement is illustrated in Figures 5 As shown there, the lever 29 is pivoted on the pin 30 to the housing 31 which is pivotally supported on a shaft 32. Thel lower end 34 of the lever 29 is forked and engages a Hanged hub 35 on the slidable shaft is adapted to be enshaft 32, one ange 36 of the hub extending downwardly and engaging the shaft 38. This shaft 38 extends into the housing 31 through a curved opening 39 which housing to swing freely about its supporting 32. The lower inner wall of the housing 31 is formed as a segment 40 with teeth adapted to be engaged by the teeth of a gear 41 carried with the shaft 38. Both the shafts 32 and 38 are journaled in fixed bearings 33 and 39. When the hand lever 29 is in its vertical position, as shown in Figure 6, and rocks rearwardly in the direction of the arf row, as shown in Figure 5, the supporting shaft 32 will be slid longitudinally and will cause axial movement of the shaft 38 through the' fork'36. In the median position of the operating lever 29 the parts will be in the position illustrated in Figure 9 and rearward dumping will be brought about. If now, the lever 29 is rocked to the left, as shown in Figure 6, it will swing with it the housing 31 about the shaft 32 as an axis, this rotative movement of the housing causing rotation of the shaft 38 through the engagement of the segment 40 with the gear 41. This movement will rock the shaft 38 in a counterclockwise direction until the;
parts assume the position shown in Figure l0. The shaft 38 can then be slid axially by rocking the lever 29 in the' usual manner. As pointed out before this will serve to rotate the keys 11 of the bearings II, IV for the purpose of .permitting'the body to be tilted to the left as viewed in Figure 4. After the body is returned to normal position where it rests completely on its four supports the lever 29 can be rocked to move the shaft 38 axially and lock all of the keys 11. When the lever 29 is rocked towards the right, as viewed in Figure 6, it is evident that the shaft 38 will be rocked in a clockwise direction as compared to its position in Figure 9 swinging movement of the lever 29 serving further toe effect the unlocking ofthe two left hand joints I', III, the joints II, IV remaining locked, for tilting of the body towards the "right,`as indicated: in dotted lines in Figure 4.
The invention is not to bevlimited to the power devicesfor actually effecting the tilting of the body, but as shown in the drawings a fluid pressure cylinder 24 is mounted under the vehicle frame and receives an actuating medium through a supply pipe 27 for the actuation of a sliding piston 25 connected through a rod 26 to an arm 23 f a bell crank 21 connected respectively through links 18 to the arms 19 of a bell crank secured to the underside of the body through a universal joint 20. With the power applied in the manner described, it is evident that the direction of tilting which the body will assume will depend entirely on which pair of supporting joints is locked by thewill permit the- `in dotted lines in `Figure 11. are locked and the joints I, III unlocked the bod will tilt to the right; with the joints I, I I locked and the joints II, IV unlocked the body will tilt to the left and with the joints III, IV locked and the joints I, II unlocked the bod will tilt to the rear. All of this tilting wi l take place under the inuence of power applied at the one point from the piston 25.
Another feature of the invention which may be of considerable importance has to do with the locking of the fuel control devices for the motor cylinder 24, so longI as the control devices for the various locks of the joints are not in predetermined relation. It is quite evident that it is not desirable and, indeed, may be dangerous to permit the motor. 24, 25 or its equivalent element,"to impress power upon the body 1 before the' joints are unlocked in the desired combination. To prevent any such premature application of power it is proposed, in accordance' with the invention, to mount the control lever 62 for the valve of the ymotor 24, 25 in such relation to the control lever 29 for the locking devices of the joints I, II, III, IV as to permit the lever 62 to be moved only when the ver 29 are in predetermined position.` Details of the precise means for carrying out this relation can be changed by one skilled in the art, but Ia suitable construction is illustrated in Figure 5. There, the lever 62 is mounted pivotally at 63 and by its movement controls the valve or other element for the motor 24, 25 or equivalent device. The lever 62 is formed as a bell crankand has its lower arm 64 normally resting against a qliadrant 65 which is secured to a shaft 66 on which is supported a arm has a slot and stud connection indicated at 68 with the end of the slidable shaft 32 upon which is supported the housing 31.

When thelever 29 has been rocked so as to move the shaft 32 and control rod 38 tothe position indicated Figure 5, it-is certain, as hereinbefore explained, that two of the joints will be unlocked and locked. In this condition it is safe to apply power to the body 'to tilt it. With the shafts 32 and 38 in-the position shown in dotted lines it will be clear that the arm 67 with the locking quadrant 65 will have been-rocked in a clockwise quadrant out of engagement with the end of the arm 64 and permit the fuel 62 to be manipulated.

The lever 57 may be engaged operatively by a spring 58 which serves to engage its end with the flanges 59 when the body ispmoved out of engagement with the end 6l. The operation of this simple lock will be apparent. When therbody 1 is out of engagement with the'end 61 of the lever 60, the opposite end 57 will be drawn into engagement with the flanges 59 of the rod 38 and lock the latter against further movement. None of the locking devices for the joints I, II, III, IV can therefore be manipulated until the body 1 is re- Stored to normal position resting completely on the four supporting joints, whereupon it will trip the lock 57 and release the shaft 38 for actuation in the manner hereinbefore described. f
We claim as our invention. l
1. In a dumping wagon, the combination of a frame, a body detachably connected to one of said two named elements, four supporting joints for the body, and locking devices operable selectively to lock said supporting joints in pairs in position while unlocking the remaining two joints.
2. In combination, a supporting frame, a dumping body, four ball and socket joints to support the bod carried with the body, and devices operab e selectively to lock said joints to the frame in pairs while unlocking theA other two joints for tilting of the body.
3. -In combination, a supporting frame, a dumping body, four ball and socket joints carried with the dumping body and adapted to support it on the frame, locking keys engageable with said balls to lock them to the frame, .separate shafts geared to said keys, and a sin le operating rod movable axially and angu arly and intermediate connections to rotate said shafts and operate -said keys in selective combinations of vpairs for the purpose of locking` certain of said keys while unlocking the others. k
4. In combination, a supporting frame, a ball and socket joints the dumping body and adapted the frame, locking `keys engageable with said balls to carried with for the purpose just men-l lOCk them to theA frame, separate shafts geared to said keys, a single operating rod movable axially and angularly and intermediate connections to rotate said shafts and operate said keys in selective combinations of pairs for the purpose of locking certain unlocking the others, and a hand lever operatively engaged with said rod for controiling its movements.
5. In combination with a frame, a dumping body, four ball and socket joints carried with the body and adapted to rest on the frame, keys to lock said joints to the frame, separate operating shafts for said keys, a single operating rod actuating said shafts, and devices carried with the rod and with the shafts and engageable selectively by rotation of the rod to effect actuation of the keys selectively for the purpose of locking certain of them and unlocking others of them.

In combination, a supporting frame, a dumping body, four ball and socket 'joints carried with the dumping body and adapted to support it on the frame, locking keys engageable with said balls to lock them to the frame, separate shafts geared to the. said keys, a single operating rod movable axially and angularly and intermediate connections to rotate said shafts and operate said keys in selective combinations of pairs for the purpose of locking certain of said keys while unlocking the others and power devices mounted on the frame and operatively connected to the body for tilting it.
7. In combination, a supporting frame, a dumping body, four ball and socket joints carried with the dumping body and adapted to support it on the frame, locking keys engageable with said balls to -lock them to the frame, separate shafts geared 'to said keys, a single' operating rod movable axially and angularly and intermediate connections to rotate said shafts and operate said keys in selective combinations of pairs for the purpose'of locking certain of said keys while unlocking the others, a hand lever loperatively engaged with said rod for controlling its movements, power devices mounted on the frame and connected to the body for tilting it, and operating means for said power devices operatively engaged with said control lever and locked against movement by said leverV so long as it remains in predetermined position.

In a dumping wagon, the combination of a frame, a body, four supporting joints for the body carried with one of said parts, locking devices operable selectively to lock said supporting joints in pairs' to the other of said parts while unlocking the remaining two joints, a `power device for tilting the body mounted on the frame, and universal connections between the body for vtilting the -body in any one of several directions depending onthe'selec; tion of locked and unlocked joints.
14. The combination for-.side vand end dumping, means for locking each side and one end of the .body with the chassis, and manually operable controlling mechanism for selectively releasing the locking means for permitting side or end `tilting action of the body. v
