CLAYTON HOBERT, F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BEDSPRING SUPPORT.
Application filed March 1, 1922, Serial No. 540,090. Renewed September 22, 1923.
To all 207mm it may cancer 1w the foot, and 3 the side ie it known that I, CLAYTON Honnnr, a citizen of the United ,States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedspring ingis a specification. v
My invention relates to bed springs, and particularly to auxiliary spring mechanism adapted to advantageously reinforce the yielding bed bottom as hereinafter fully set forth and clearly defined in the claims.
Among the objects of the invention is to provide improved resilient supporting means for the intermediate portion of the bed spring. j
A further object is to provide a supporting means which will have an equalizing action when one side of the bed bottom fabric is depressed, and a still further object is to provide a supporting means of the nature described which may be adjusted to take up any sag in the bed bottom fabric and, if desired, to even raise the intermediate portion of the bed bottom. fabric above the normal plane.
iVith the foregoing and other objects in view as will be hereinafter more specifically brought out, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Fig: 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of a bedstead with the invention applied thereto,
Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the trans verse bed bottom fabric supporting bar showing fragments of the bed bottom fabric. and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view taken through Fig. 2 on the line 4-4- t-llGIBOf.
Referring to the accom 'ianying drawing, reference numeral 1 designates the head, 2 rails of a bedstead. The bed bottom. fabric 4 is mounted in any well known or desired manner as upon a supporting frame 5 with usual risers 6. This bed bottom fabric while illustrated as beingof woven fabric, may known constructions, such/es wire coils, links or the like. and intact h bcttom Supports, of which the follow-,
be of any of the well fabric forms no part of this invention, but to the contrary the invent-ion is intended as an attachment for all forms of bed bottom fabrics.
At any desired point between the ends of the bottom fabric is arranged a transverse supporting bar 7, the same being attached to the 'bottom fabric by means of straps 8 passed through end slots 9 in the transverse bar andsecured by blICklQS 10. While two straps 8 are illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, one at each end of the bar 7, it will be understoodthat in some iases it will be desirable to employ other such straps in the intermediate slots 9 of the bar 7, or it may be preferable to employ a single strap to extend entirely across the bar 7 looping in an obvious manner through all of the slots 9 and engaging with certain of the bottom fabric.
Depending centrally from, the transverse ar 7 is a post 12, preferably braced by members 14: extending from the post to pertions of the bar 7 and this post is circular in cross-section and has its lower end threaded as indicated by reference numeral 15 to receive a nut 16. This nut is pro vided with a circular flange .17 equipped at intervals with apertures 18 regularly spaced apart and with certain of which the inthe strands of nor ends of pairs of coil tension springs 19 and 20 connect. The outer ends of the springs of the pair 19 connect with apertures 21 in the ends of plates 22, and similarly the outer ends of the springs of the pair 20 are attached to a like plate 22. 7 Each. of these plates 22 is provided at each end with an aperture 24 through each or which passes a strap 25, and these straps are passed around the side rails of the bedstead and secured by buckles 26.
The bar 7 with its post 12, braces 14.- and nut 16, as well as the plates 22 may be constructed of aluminum for lightness, though other metals will serve where lightness is not a factor, and the straps 8 and 25 may be of leather, fabric or metal.
In use, when a person sit-s on the edge oi the bottom fabric, one end. of the transverse bar will be depressed, thereby throwing the thecombination Witha side-bar bedstead the post 712. When a' person is lying in the bed the full benefit of the springs on both sides will be had to prevent undue sagging or uneven depression of the bottom fabric.
Thus it will be seen that there is not only an equalizing action, but should the bottom fabric become permanently stretched this objection may be overm'nne or neutralized bysimpl'y adjusting the nut 16 to increase the resistance of the springs19 and 20.
hat Iclail'n is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a side-bar bedstead and a bed bottom, of a bed bottom supporting device comprising a transverse element'having a single depending portion, a; nut threaded thereon, and springs connecting said nut and the side bars of the bedstead. V
2. In a device of the character. described, the combination with a side-bar bedstead and a bed bottom, of a bed bottom supporting device comprising a transverse elementhaving a single depending portion, a flanged nut threaded on the lower end thereof, and tension springs connecting said nut flange and side bars of the bedstead.
3. In a device of the character described,
and a bed bottom, of a bed bottom supporting device comprising'a transverse element having a single depending central portion, a flanged nut threaded on the lower end thereof, the
flange having apertures therein spaced at intervals, and tension springs en 1 gaged with flange apertures on each side of portion; and with the slde the depending V bars of the bedstead.
l. In a device of the character described,
the combination \i'ith a sidebar bedstead and a bed bottom, of abed bottoriisupport 111g device .comprlslng a transverse elementhaving a. depending central portlon, means for attachingthe transverse element to the bed bottom, a flanged nut on the lovver end of the depending portion, the flange having apertures therein spaced apart at regular inter'vals, a p a1 r of tension springs having their In testlmony whereof I aflix my signature.
