w. Boss HUMIDIFIER n Filed April 7, 1922 mmuu Y Z'NvE/v TOR:
WILL/AM BOSS. BYW M ,A T TOR/VE.' YS
Patented oa. ae, i923.
WILLIAJE'BGSS, OF ST.`PAUL, MINNESOTA.
HUMIDIFIER.
Application led April 7,
' To allee/wm, t may concern.'
Be it known that I, WrLLrAM Boss, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul. in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Humidfiers, of which the following is a specification.-
My invention relates to humidifiers for use particularly in connection with steam radiators or hot wate` radiators, and an object is to provide eflicientmeans for keeping the air in the rooms containing the radiators in moist condition. Particular objects are to provide a humidifier| which may be conveniently and economically manufactured,
which may be readily installed in place upon a radiator, which will insure rapid evaperation of water, and which will act to collect dust which is carried upwardly by the current of hot air rising from theV radiator.
The full objects and advantagesof my invention will appear in connection with the detailed description, and the novel features embodied in my inventive idea will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate one form in which my invention may be embodied, Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of the humidifier. Fig. 2 is a view of the humidifier in vertical longitudinal section showing it inV place upon the top of a radiator. Fig. 3 is an end elevational view.
Fig. 4; is a view of the humidifier in verticalV transverse section showing it in place on the top of a radiator. Fig- 5 is a view in horizontal section on theline 5-5 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary sectional view of the fabric which I employ. Fig. 7 is a fragmentary plan view of the fabric.
As shown in the drawings, I provide a casing 10, the front portion of which is provided with a bottom 12 to constitute a water receptacle. The rear wall of this receptacle is constituted by a partition 14; which is spaced forwardly from the rear wall of the casing so as to provide a vertical passageway 16 for the hot air rising from the ra- Y diator.V A plurality of horizontal ro'dlike supports 18 extend .above the water receptacle from front to rear, these supports having end portions 2() which are bent downwardly at'right angles for Vsecuring 'the supports 18, these end portions .being preferably soldered to the front and rear walls of the 1922. serial No. 550,543.
casing 10. The fabric 22 having a width substantially the saine as that of the water receptacle is folded back and forth over the supports 18 so as to have'portions extending down to the bottom of the water receptacle and other portions extending horizontally above the receptacle, these lower por tions and upper portions being connected by vertical portions of the fabric as will be ap-l parent from Fig. 2. I provide a cover 2a for the casing 10, this cover having a periph eral depending flange portion, the rear of which when the cover is in place forms an upward continuation of the rear wall of vthr-r casing whereby a deflector is formed. The front portion and the forward side portions of the peripheral flange are provided with perforations or slots 2 6'as shown in Figs. 1 and3 for escape of the moistened air. The cover may be securely held in place by horizontal supports 28, the end portions of which are bent downwardly at right angles and soldered to the casing at the two ends of the latter. The front portion of the water receptacle is provided with a shield 30 within which is a fioat 32 to which is secured a vertical rod 34, the upper end of which is bent forwardly so as to extend through a slit 36 in the cover flange and is provided lwith a head 38 upon observing which the amount of water in the receptacle is indicated.
The operation and advantages of my invention will now be apparent. The humidifier is placed on top of the radiator R so that the rear wall of the casing in connection with the rear flange of the cover constitutes a defiector which in use will engage the wall of the room or the window ledge L as shown in Fig. 4 and cause the hot air rising from the radiator to pass up through the passageway 16 and then'forwardly through the device from which it escapes through the Slots 26. The fabric which I employ is preferably one having a pronounced nap as shown in Figs. 6 and 7. Moisture is drawn up into the fabric by capillarity and is quickly picked up by the forwardly passing current of air impinging upon the projecting nap. At the same time particles of dust carried by the air are retained. On account of the solid top portion of the cover, the moistened air is forced .to pass out into the room through the slots 26 and the cover may be utilized as a support for various articles. The water receptacle'may be filled through any one ot the pertorations 26 without removal of' the COVGI.
I claim:
1. A humidifier comprising a i casing adapted to rest upon the top of a radiator, arwater receptacle constituted by the'torward portion of said casing, the rear wall ot said casing` being` substantially parallel to and o t thesaine height as the rear wall ot said water receptacle whereby a vertical passageway 1s formed for heated air from the radiator, a plurality ot rods having horlzontal portions extending above said water 4 receptacle between the front and rear thereof for supporting. a fabric with portions thereof extending down into said water re` ceptacle andA having` downwardly bent endsV Ywater receptacle constitutec't by the forward yportion of said casing, the rear wall ot said casing being substantially parallel to and ofthe same height asrthe rear wall of said water receptacle whereby a vertical passageway is formed for heated air from the radiatorya plurality o rods having horizontal portions extending above said water receptacle between the front and rear thereof for supporting a fabric with portions thereofextending down intorsald water receptacle and having downwardly bent ends secured to said casing, a cover V'for said casing orcausing theheated, air passing through said pas# l s ageway to i'rnpinge upon said fabric, said cover having peripheral dependingA front, rear'and end flanged: portions, the rear flanged portion forming an upward continuation of the rear wall of said casing, and the front hanged portion and enda'langed portions being provided with perforar-tions for the escape of moistened air, and two rods at the .ends of said-casinghavingV horizontal portions located above said first-nientioned horizontal portions and havingdownwardly bent ends secured to said casing whereby a support for said cover is formed.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature.
