Application filed January 12,1923. "Serial No. 612,221.
107mm it, may concern: 7 Be "5 known vthat I. Bnonrsnuv li: -\CZIIAR- snr. a citizen of Poland, residing at Detroit county of Wayne, and State of Mich 1 gan, have invented certain new and useful- Improvements in Beet Toppers of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in agricultural machines, particularly in beet toppers, and 1t 1s the prmcipal object of my inventlon to provide a plurality of reciprocating knives or cutters which will serve to sever the top of a plurality of beets With these and other ends in view my in-l vention consists in the improved construction, arrangement and combination'of parts more fully to be described hereinafter and then particularly pointed out in the claim. In the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a beet topper constructed according to my invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan View of the same. Figure 3 is a side elevation, partly in section on line 33 of Figure 4. V
Figure 4 is a front elevation of the ma-.
chine.
Figure 5 is a section on line 5-5 of Figure 1. 1
Figure 6 is a detail view showing one of the conveyors in top plan View, and
Figure 7 is a side elevation thereof. The machine comprises a frame or bed 10 on which is supported by a plurality of uprights 11, a table 12 carrying intermediate its ends a frame comprising pairwise arranged vertical end posts 13, the upper;
ends of which are connected by horizontal beams 14, while pairwise arranged horizontal upper beams 15 and lower beams 16 connect the pairs of end posts 13-. A crank shaft 17 is journaled with its ends in beams 14- and PIOJQCtS beyond the same.
To the crank armslS and 19 of shaft 17, I
the upper ends of links 20 and 21 are secured, to lthe lowerends of which are pivotally attached the frame bars 22 and 23for and 25. r I p I V,
The outer end of shaft 17 carries a pulley 26, over which a belt 27 is guided, which is also guided over a pulley 28 on a shaft 29 journaled in the machine frame and carthe exchangable knife blades or cutters 24 lying at its other end beyond the frame a sprocket wheel 30 and a drive pulley 31, adapted to be rotated by means of a belt or other suitable device from a motor or the belt pulley of a locomobile etc. A chain 32 is guided over sprocket wheel 30 and a sprocket wheel 38 on a shaft34 journaled transversely int-he machine frame, and shaft 34 carries on the opposite side of the machine frame a sprocket wheel 35, over which a chain 36 is guided, which is also guided over a sprocket wheel 37 on a shaft ournaled in the frame at one end, and in a vertical bar 39 within the frame at its opposite end. I Shaft 38 carries at its outer end beyond bar '39 a bevel gear 40 in mesh with a larger bevel gear 41' at the end of a shaft 42 journaled' in the machine frame and extendi'n'gbeyond the front wall of the same where it carries a pulleyr43, over which a belt 44-is guided, whichis also guided over a pulley 45 on a shaft-46 journaled in two of the front posts of the frame designated 47' and'48 in'the drawing. At its opposite end the shaft 46 carries a sprocketwheel 49, over which a chain 50 is guided, which is also guided over a lower sprocket wheel 7 51 on shaft 52 journaled in the frame between posts 47 and 48, and which carries at its opposite end a pulley 53, over which a belt 54 is guided, which is also guided over a pulley 55 on a transversal shaft 56 of an auxiliary conveyer 57 in a, frame composed of side bars 58' and 59. I
The conveyer 57 carries partitions 60, and brackets 61 and 62 are attached to one of the ends of bars 58 and 59 to allow an attachment of the auxiliary conveyer 57' to links 63 and 64; as best shown in Figure 4. V
'A small roller 65 is journaled between bars 58 and 59 for guiding the conveyer 57,
A conveyer belt 75 is transversely guided through the machine under the knives or cutters at one end over shaft 42, and at its opposite end over a shaft 76, while another conveyer belt 77 is guided in the front part of the machine over shaft 46 and a roller 78 journaled in the frame.
The machine operates as follows: 7
The beets are placed upon the conveyers 6G and 67 which will guide thebeets under the springs 73 and 74 when the machine is started by rotating pulley 31 on shaft 29 from a suitable motor.
Shaft 29 carries on the opposite side of the machine a pulley 28, over-which belt 27 is guided, which is also guided over pulley 26 on crank shaft 17, so that during the rotation of the shaft 17 the knives will execute a vertical reciprocating motion.
The rotation of shaft 29 will be communicated by means of pulley 28 and chain 32 to sprocket wheel 33 on shaft 34, over which the conveyers 66 and 67 are guided.
The beets 79 will be guided by conveyers 6G and 67 under the pressure of springs 73 and 74 under the knives 23 and 24 to be topped in an obvious manner. I
'Shaft 34 carries at its opposite end the pulley 35, which is connected by means of belt 36 to pulley 37 on shaft 38. Shaft 38 carries bevel gear 40 which is in mesh with bevel gear 41 on shaft 42, which will be' rotated and over which conveyer 75 is guided, which is also guided over roller 7 6 This conveyer 75 is directly beneath the knives and the conveyers 66 and 67 so that the cut oil tops of the beets will fall between conveyers 66 and 67 upon convcyer 75 and will be carried towards the side of the machine.
The topped beets will be carried along' on conveyers 66 and 6'; until they are are de cred by this conveyer to a collecteel, car or washer.
it will easily be seen that my invention may be varied in many ways without departing from the principles which are the basis of the same.
vertically reciprocating knives secured to' said shaft to operate upon the rotation of said shaft, a pair of spaced conveyer belts guided longitudinally through the topper adapted to receive the beets to betopped, the inner edges of said belts directly under and parallel to the cutting edges of said knives, a transversal conveyer belt under said knives for discharging the cut oil tops, a transversal conveyer belt in front of the ends of said pair of conveyor belts, links attached to the frame of the topper, an auxiliary conveyor adapted to be attached to said links to form a continuation of said last named transversal belt for discharging the toppcd beets. means for simultaneously operating said knives and con veyers to perform their respective functions. and a pair of strong leaf springs adapted to press the beets against said pair of con- ."QVQT belts to allow an operation of the knives for removing their tops.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
BRONISLAXV KACZMARSKI,
What I claim as new and desire to secure directly
