--UNiTED sTQpES rar-Er ELLA M. Brianna, or LYoNsnEW Yon-Kfu COMBINED HEMMER 4ann TUCKER.
Application ilediy September 2U, 1930.v Serial No;`11r`v11,6`39.
To all whom t may concern.;
Be it known that I, ELLA M. BEADLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lyons, in the county of Wayne, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lImprovements in Combined IFIemmers land Tuckers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, yreference being had In the drawings: n
Figure 1 shows a top plan view of my attachment applied to a sewing machine and used asa hemmer. K y Y Figure 2 is an end view'of the r'device shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a plan view of my attachment in operation as a tucker.
Figure 4: is a top plan view of the left i hand end of the plate 13 shown in Figures 1 and 3.
Figure 5 is a section on the line 5**-5a of Figure 1.
Figure 6 is a section on the line 61--6a of A Figure 3.
` Figure 7 shows a modified form. of supporting device.
Figure 8 is a sectiony on the line 8a-8 of Fio'ure 3. Y
imilar referencecharacters throughout the several views indicatethe same parts.
In the drawings the numerall indicates the bed of the usual sewing machineprovided with the customary `'presser foot 2 and shank 3 therefor with which the needle l cooperates in sewing the seam 5 in the goods 6. Sewing machines are usuallyprovided with a set screw V7 on the bed to which may be attached the supporting device 8 Jfor my combined hemming and tucking attach- Y ment. As shown the support 8 is provided at each end with adjusting slots arranged substantially at right angles to one another and vin which are placed the' clamp yscrews 7'` andk9 respectively., g The clamping screw or""device 9' adjustably positions two` plates or` mem-k bers/10 andv 13 comprising lmy combinedl hemmer and tuoker. The slotted plate 10 Lis provided at itsright end with adownturned extension or'edge inthe form of a l work guiding hooky or gauge `11 which is shown as being perforated at 12 for'insertion of the prongs of lthe other plate 13. .It desired suitable graduations rmay be placed on the plate 13 in order'to indicate the relative position orn these two plates 10 and 13. At its lefty end plate 13 is yalso provided with a down-turned edge 121 adapted to serve as a gauge or guiding hook for the material in sewing,` but of less depth than hook 11 as is'indicated in Figure 2.
VProvided on the gauge 14 but laterally disposed relative tothe kplate 13 "is an up-y ployed to turn'in the edgey of the goodsv when the ldevice is used as a hemmer. By
rhaving the turningy lip 15 "disposed at the .side of the plate 13 the turning lip will not turn or hem the goods nor prevent thefhook ltserving as a gaugewhen the attachmentk is used'as a tucker. f y y Those standard makes of'm'achines which are not supplied with the clamp screw 7 are .provided with some similar clampingmeans on the presser foot, and in these machines it will be desirable to use some form of support as shown in Figure 7, which is provided turned lip li'which is adapted to be 'emwith a groove 16 for the reception of the clamp screw on the presser foot and with anothergroove v1'? on its other end for the reception of the clamping means 9.
In operation as a hemmer Figure 1 shows the arrangement of parts from which their y co-operation will be readily seen. The
. width of the hem depends upon the separation of the gauges 11 and 14'. In order to change the position of the seam 5 relative to either edgeof the hem the device 'as a whole may be k'moved along the suppiortby meansl of the adjusting clamp 9 orby means of moving the support 8 relative to the lclamp screw 7. Figure 3 illustrates the arrangement of parts whenthe attachment is used fortucking. Figure 5 represents a section throughy fthe goods after sewing hem 18. In operation as atucker the spac-v ing of the gauges 11 andpl relative to one another determines kthe l'separatim of the tucks 19 while the distanceof the gauge` 11 7 'roin the needle 4: determines the size of the tucks. From Figure 3 it will be seen Y thatthe single adjusting or clamping means the positionof these platesv inrespect to theV needle. Y
Amongthe advantages'. o1' my combined heinming and tucking attaclimentfniay'be mentioned the fact that because lthe turningV lip is llaterally disposed to the plate 13 the lip 'is not in the'waypof the goods when the device functions as a tucker. instead of ihaving several adjustments to vary the size of thetuclts as well as the spacing thereof, a single ad]usting or clamping means 9 is afforded to take' care of both adjustments,
`both the gauges 11 and la.
which means controls the' adjustment of p I The easiliT adjustable support 8 affords a readyV and simpliiiedmeans of moving the .Combined heminingand tucking attachment along Vas well as transversely lof the seam.
llclaim as my invention: 1. A combined hemming vand tucking attachment for sewing machines comprising pair of Overlapping plates, downward -eXteIlSlOIls on the overlapping portions of the Vplates vforming work guides, r`one of Asaid plates being slidablycarred in a `slot in the `downwardextension of theother plate with vsaid, Y extensions Vj in A n adjustably` opposed relation, a folding lip on-one of said Work Vguides disposed laterally ofsaid plates.y and a device for adjnstably clampingsaid overlapping plate portionstogether.
- 2.1i. combined hemming and tucking Y attachment 4for sewing machines comprising pair of overlapping plates, downward extensions vonthe overlapping portions ol the plates forming work guides, one oic said plates being fslidably carried in a slot in the downward extension of the other plate with said extensions in adjustably opposed relation, `and means adjustably supporting each'oic said plates.
3. A. combined `heinining and tucling attachment forsew'ing machines comprising a' pair of overlapping plates, dowi'iward extensions on the overlappingportions Voit the plates forming work guides,v one oi' said platesr being slidably carried in a slotfiiiA the' downward extension of the other plate with said extensions'in adjustably opposed relation, a supporting arm for attachment to the sewing 'machine7 vand a device 4adjustablT connected with'said arm and with each of Asaid plates forclaniping the plates together'and to saidv arm.
.4. Inra tuckixng ,attachmentthecombina-` tionvwith aslotted plate provided with` a down-turned Yedge forming a gauge ad `jacent one end,. of:y ai second slotted plate adjustablv secured tosaidrst plate which projects through the downfturnedilange ot Ysaid first plate rand is provided adjacent one end with a down-turned edge or.;s`eco'nd igauge in spaced cooperation withfthe Yfirst :mentioned gauge, and an adjustable' clamping4 device adapted to secure the plates ,together in adjustablv spaced relation.
ELLA M. BEADLE.
