Application ledrSeptem'ber 13, 1,922. Serial No. 587,956.
p weight and material, which is cheap to make, strong and durable.
`My invention provides further a novel nosing bar, and novel means for supporting thereon a tread grating.
The novel features of my invention ar hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates the preferred embodiment of lmy invention,
Fig. l is a top view of two of my improved treads shown mounted on two stringers, which 'are broken away.
Fig. 2 is la vertical section on the line 2--2 of Fig. l, the view being enlarged.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the broken line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is` an enlarged vertical section on the line 4-4 of Fig. l.V
Similar reference characters designate similar parts in the different views.
l designates the usual twostringers, such as are commonly used in fire escapes, to which my inventionis particularly well adapted for use.
2 designates a nosing bar from the front portion of which extend rearwardly two arms 3, fastened by boltsv 4 to the stringers l respectively. The arms 3 are inwardly turned at their rear ends, to form the portions 5. Extending through the arm portions 5 respectively of the nosing bar and through the front portion of said bar are two transverse horizontal bolts or bars 6, which may be threaded and provided with nuts 7 at their rear ends.
Supported on the bars or bolts 6 is a tread grating 8, which is located between the arm portion 5 and the front portion of the nosing bar to which the rear and front sides of bybolts 9, or other `suitable means. It will be noted that the grating 8 at it ends terminates short of the stringers 1 and is wholly supported by the nosing'bar. As it is supported by the bars or bolts 6, the
n grating may have relatively shallow depth,
while affording sufficienty strength for its purpose.
terial, cost and weight.
By having the nosing` bar of substantially rectangular form, va very strong construction is afforded, which is rigid and furnishes secure means for attachment to the stringers and to the grating.
I do not limit my invention to the structure shown and described, as many modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, `mayr be made, withoutdeparting from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim is :i-
1. A stair tread comprising a nosing bar having a front portion and two arms which extend rearwardly and then inwardly toward each other, the arms vbeing adapted tobe supported by two stringers respec- Y tively, and a tread grating attached to and supported by said front portion and said inwardly extending portions of said arms, substantially as set forth. t
2. A stair tread comprising a nosing bar This construction alfords a maxi-V Y mum of strength with a minimum of ,maT
v the ktread gratingY` are respectively secured having a front portion and two arms which extend rearwardly and then inwardly t0- ward each other, the arms being adapted kto be supported Vby two lstringere respectively, two bars supported respectively by said inwardly extending portions of said arms and said front portion, and a tread grating supported on said bans, substantially as set forth.
3. A stair tread comprising a nosing bar having a front portion and two arms which extend rearwardly and then inwardly toward'each other, the arms being adapted to be attached to and supported by two stringers respectively, two bars supported `respectively by said inwardly extending Y portionsV and said front portion, and a tread v grating resting on said bars and attached at its front and rear sides respectively to said front portion and to said inwardly extending portions, substantially asset forth.
4. A stair tread comprising a nosing bar, arms adapted to be respectively secured to and a tread grating attached at its front two stringers, the rear ends of said arms l and rear sides t0 and supported by said extending inwardly toward each other, sub- 10 nosing bar,*substantially as set forth.` stanti-ally asset', forth.
5 5 A `nosing barl of the kind described? In'- tstimonywhereof I have 'signed my comprising a bar having a front portionv riame--to'this speeication. provided With two rearwardly extending.. n ,Y aVVH-illiLex-M L. PATTISON.
