i T 0 all whom it may concern: der segments suitably secured tothe ends 10 Be it known that I; STUART FLEMING, a of the cylinder by the screws '14 threaded".
subject of the King ofGreat- Britain, of'the into longitudinal holes in the ends of such city of Owen Sound, in the county of Grey, cylinder segments. The segments 13 are e in the Province of Ontario, Canada; have mortised into the ends 10 as shown at 16, 0
invented certain new and useful Improve- (Fig. 2).; 17 is a cylindrical member joinments in Zinc-Plate Cylinders for Offset ing the bossesll together and formed in- Lithographing Presses, of which the followtegrally therewith, the cylinder ends 10 be in is the specification. ing mounted on such bosses 11 and being 1 y invention relates to improvements in preferably circular inshape. f zinc plate cylinders for offset lithographing The interior of one. end of each segment 13 presses and the object of the invention is is bevelled off as is shown at 181 (Fig to devise a cylinder having a plurality of the other end of each segment being subsegments on which are mounted independent stantially rectangular and the outside corner 1 zinc plates. A further object is to provide rounded off.
means'for readily attaching the zinc plates 19 is an annular web inserted between the to the segments of the cylinder and a further member 17 and the cylinder segments 13 object is to construct a cylinder in which and designed to give strength to the centre a plurality of separate and distinct lithoof the cylinder segments. 20 are the zinc 20 graphing jobs can be run off at the same plates carrying the lithographing matter,'
time instead of having to, do these jobs eachof said plates being hinged atone end separately. A still further object'is to conto a, plate 21 as is shown at 22' (F ig. 4). struct a cylinder which will permit of the The plate 21 is preferably constructed of ,use of rolls of paper instead of sheets which light gauge steel and. hasfa longitudinal 25 have hitherto been employed with oflset lithslot 23 therein to permit thelplate to extend l ographing presses, on each side of the'annular web-19.; 24; My invention consists of a zinc plate are holes in thebottom edge'of the plate 21 cylinder constructed and arranged substanthrough which the cap screfws30 {pass when tially as hereinafter more particularlydethe plate '21 is'firmly secured between a scribed and illustrated in the accompanying. flattened surface on the shaftf29 and the drawing in'which: p binding plates 31, by tightening the heads Fig. 1 represents a side elevation of a of the cap, screws 30 whichscrew into the portion of an-oifset lithographing press 'shafti29 against thebinding' plates 81. I 20. 27, is a rod extending through the afore Fig. 3 is an end view of one of my c-ylinsaid sockets'for hinging the plates 20 and'21 ders, and f together. f. ,95 Fig. 4"is a detail in plan of one of my 28 are ratchet 'wheels mo-untedon the zinc plates, showing the -means of attachshafts 29 and extending longitudinally ment to the cylinder segments. through thec yl'inder between themember 17 Like characters ofreference indicate cor and the cylinder segments 13. 30 are cap 1 is the frameof the press. .2 is a paper shafts 29. and to carry the binding plates roll. 3 is the paper adapted to be wound off 31, said shafts 29 being freely mounted in the roll 2 over the-rollers 4t and 5- and be the ends 10 of the cylinder. I g i tween the feedroller 6 and the printing; 32 are pawls'pivotally connected to the roller 7. 8 is myiz'inc plate-cylinder s'uitends 10 and adaptedjto engage 7 the teeth ably mounted in bearings 9 inthe frame 1. 5 of theratchet wheels 28 as is shown in Fig.
'10 are the ends of the cylinder provided 3. 33 are squared ends, onthe shafts 29 to with the bosses ll'and shafts 12 by. means which a boxspanner can be japplied for 10f which'the cylinder. is mounted in the the purpose ofturningisuchshafts. 34: are.
bearings 9 of the "frame 1. 13 are the cylin 'shaftsffreely mounted in the ends 10 and ex 11 responding parts in the different views: screws adapted to be threaded into the" 100,
tending longitudinally through the cylinder between the segments 13 and. the member 17,
' nut 41.
On reference to Fig.3 of the drawings it will be seen that the cylinder segments 13 do not abut each other but are spaced apart a certain extent. This permits of the plates 20 and 21 being inserted therebetween as will hereinafter appear. n
The Zinc plates 20 are applied to the cylinder segments 13 as follows: V
The upper end of the zinc plate 4:2 is bent over into the position shown in Fig.3 and inserted between the tapered end 18 of the cylinder segment 13 and the plate on the shaft 34.
By unscrewing the lock nut ll the threaded screw 39 can be tightened up by applying a box-spanner'thereto. As the inner end or the screw 39 engages the boss 11 of the member 17, by turning the bolt 39 the arm 36 will be forced away from such boss. When this occurs the shaft 34 is turned and with it the plate 35 which is pressed firmly against the turned'over end 42 of the'zinc plate 20. Thus theend ofthe Zinc plate is held firmly between the plate 35 and the tapered end 18 of the segment 13. I l
The upper-"edge of the plate 21, which plate is fastened to the shaft 29 as described above, extends through an opening between the cylinder segments 13. The sockets 26 on the lower edge of the plate 20 are inserted between the suitably spaced sockets 25 on the upper edge of the plate 21 as described above, and the rod 27 is inserted through the sockets, thus connecting 20 and 21.
The zinc plate now being firmly attached at both ends-the shaft 29is turned by applying the box-spanner to the'squared end 33 thereof. This draws the plate 21 taut and with it the zinc plate 20 so that such zinc plate is drawn down tightly onto the surface of the cylinder segments 13. I
All the zinc plates'are applied to the different segments in exactly the same manner as described aboveandconsequently it will *be seen that such construction will enable any one of the zinc plates to be changed without interfering with the other plates.
From the above descriptionit will be seen that I have devised a zinc plate cylinder to which different segments can be"applie'd independently, said segments containing different lithographing matter thus enabling the operator to do a plurality of jobs at the same time. V
. Hitherto 1n ofi'set printing presses the zinc plates only extended for a certain portion of the circumference of the cylinder and the remaining part of the circumference was wasted. In my devicel make use of a plurality of segments suitably spaced apart giving a printing surface of the entire circumference of the'cylinder, except for a small space between each segment which corresponds with and represents the bottom and top margin of the adjacent forms being lithographed.
Hitherto it has been the practice to use the paper stock in sheets of the required size, and this is essential where onlyxonc segmental zinc plate is used on the cylinder.
in my cylinder however where i use zinc plates for the entire circumference of the cylinder the paper stock may be used in rolls, thus efi'ecting a considerable economy in paper as well as saving much time in handling the same.
What I claim as my invention is:
