Description
Oct 9 1923. V
S. STEPHENS PRINTER'S QUOIN Filed April 21. 1922 Imenifow fiamuei sie a Patented @ct. 1%23 few-w s M PHENS AND WICKERSI-IAM QUOIN' PORA'IION OF IVIASSACHUSETTS.
COMPANY, or nos'ron, rvrnssaon'nsn'rrs. a conrnrnrnns onorn.
Application filed April 21, 1922. Serial No. 555,839.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, SAMUEL S'rnrnnns, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of ll lassachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Printers Quoins, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to quoins for printers use and operating means therefor.
.ln order that theprinciples of my invention may be clearly understood 1 have in the accompanying drawings disclosed embodiments thereof wherein are represented a preferably metallic quoin adapted to be expanded to meet the varying requirements of practical usage.
in said drawings,-
Fig. 1 represents a plan view of a quoin according to one embodiment of my inven tion;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof partially broken away and showing the expanding cam with the lower portion of the key inserted therein;
Fig. 3 on a smaller scale shows the quoin and expanding key in operative position;
Fig. 4: is a plan view similar to Fig. 1 of another form of quoin;
Fig. 5 is a side elevation thereof, and showing the lower portion of the key inserted.
Referring specifically to the drawings, in Figs. 1 to 3 there is shown a quoin typifying one embodiment of the invention, said quoin being composed of two blocks; or members 1 and 2 herein respectively termed for convenience of description upper and lower members. Said quoin may be and herein is shown as of the general type disclosed in the Letters Patent to Wickersham, Patent Number assess. Preferably such 'members are metallic and one of them,
herein the lower, may be provided with a projecting portion or tongue shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 adapted to be received within a correspondingly shaped recess or opening in the other member.
Said members 1 and 2 are adapted to be expanded by any suitable spreading device. Herein such device,as best seen in Fig. 2, is provided with cam portions 3, 1 and 5,
the outer portions 3 and t being adapted to cooperate with the lower member 2 and the intermediatecam portion 5 being adapted to cooperate with the upper member 1. The cam is provided with a suitable opening 6 extending centrally therethrough and herein shown as rectangularin form and adapted to receive the shank 7 of the operatingkey 8. By means of said key the expanding cam may be turned to spread the members 1 and 2 to the desired extent depending upon the degree of rotation of said spreading device and in opposition to the coil springs 9 shown in dotted lines in Fig, 1, herein employed to maintain said members normally compacted. Said springs 9 are con tained within recessed end portions of said members 1 and 2 and engage ears 10 upon said members.
It is highly desirable that the quoin may be carefully adjusted to a predetermined position, and furthermore that the degree of separation of the members may be readily determined at any time, or that the members having once been expanded and their position subsequently disturbed may be again reset to the same position.
In accordance therewith I have provided means herein consisting of a register mark 11 upon the quoin and adapted to cooperate with a scale 12 upon the key. Said register mark 11 is stamped or otherwise provided upon the upper faces of the members 1 and 2 extending diagonally across the same and in alignment with a diagonal of the squared opening 6 in the cam. A. similar register mark may be and preferably is provided upon the opposite or under surfaces of the members 1 and 2. The portion of said register mark upon one of the members 1 and 2 and herein that portion upon the lower member 2 is distinguished as by a zero or other suitable mark. Cooperating with the register mark 11 upon the quoin is said scale 12 upon a collar 13 carried by the lower portion of the operating key. Said scale 12 is shown as formed by longitudinal parallel lines or indicator marks upon the periphery of said collar 13equally spaced and preferably numbered consecutively. When the key is in operative position the zero mark of the scale will coincide with the register mark 11 upon the quoin. The degree of expansion of the members 1 and 2 may then be numbered.
read off upon the scale carried by the key as said key is rotated to expand the quoin.
Referring now to Figs. l and 5 I have shown another embodiment of my invention wherein the quoin having the members 1" and 2 is provided with a graduated scale or indicator let with which is adapted to cooperate a register mark upon the operating key 8 Herein I have shown said scale 14 as formed by radially arranged marks upon the upper faces of said members 'l and 2 surrounding the squared opening in the cam for receiving the operating key. A similar scale may be provided upon the opposite or lower faces of the members 1'" and 2. Said radial marks are preferably equally spaced and consecutively In this form the operating key is inserted with the register mark 15 in c0- incidence with the zero of the scale 14 and the degree of expansion ofthe members of the quoin may be read ofi upon the quoin itself.
Having thus described my invention, it
will be understood that although specific terms are employed they are used in a generic and descriptive sense and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the in vention being set forth in the following claim.
Clain1'- A printers quoin comprising in combination a pair of opposed rigid members adapted to be expanded and compacted relatively to each other, resilient means for compacting said members, a rotatable cam member intermediate said opposed members for expanding thesame, a key for rotatably adjusting said cam member, radially positioned graduated indicator marks, and a cooperating register mark, the oneupon said key and the other upon said opposed members whereby the extent of expansion thereof may be readily determined in reruns of angular movement of said key.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
' SAMUEL STEPHENS.
