FREDERICK e. rear, or new roan, iv. v. I
CONTROLLING VALVE FOR HYDRAU LIC OIL STORAGE AND DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS.
Application filed February To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRnoEmoK G. FARR, a citizen of the United States of America, residin at New York city, in the countyof New 01k and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Controlling Valves for Hydraulic Oil Storage and Distribution Systems, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to hydraulic oil storage and delivery systems and has particular reference to the construction of the controlling valve, being an improvement upon my former Patent No. 1,286,971, dated December 10, 1918. It is the particular object of the present improvement to avoid the drainage of the displacement liquid from laterally-extending portions of the conduit therefor, thereby avoiding the necessity of refilling such portions when delivery of oil is made. To this end the invention consists in the construction as hereformer patent inafter set forth.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical central section through the valve;
Figure 2 is a section in a plane at right angles to Fi re ,1.
is the va ve casing which at one end is connected to the supply conduit B for the water under pressure and at its opposite end is connected to the drain conduit D is acentral chamber within the valve casing which is separated from end chambers E and F respectively connecting to the conduits l5 and C by ported partitions G and H. l and J are valves preferably of the pocket type for controlling the ports in the partitions G and H and these valves are mounted on a common stem K by which when one valve is seated the other valve is withdrawn from its seat. L is an operating lever which engages a yoke M on the valve J for actuating the same, said lever being fulcrumed at and passing out from the chamber F through a slot 0 in the wall thereof. The construction as thus far described is essentially the same as that of my above referred to.
When the valve is connected into a hydraulic delivery system, the chamber D is connected with the conduit which extends to the bottom of the storage tank and through which water is delivered for the G. through the conduit 9, 1922. Serial no. 535,422.
displacement of oil. Thus, whenever the lever L is raised to seat the ,valve J and unseat the valve 1, water under pressure from the conduit B is delivered into the chamber D and through the connected conduit such as P extending to the storage tank. On the other hand, when the lever L is lowered, seating the valve 1 andunseating the valve J, the water is permitted to drain from the chamber D into the chamber F and drain conduit C. It frequently happens in tire installation of such apparatus that the conduit 1 must extend laterally for a considerable distance to the bottom of the tank. ere this is the case with the construction of valve shown in my former patent, there is nothing to prevent the draining out of all of the Water in the lateral portion of the pipe P, so that when the lever is reversed, it is necessary to refill this pipe before edecting displacement of oil from the storage tank. With my improved construction such defect is avoided by locating the ported partition H, through which communication is established, between the chambers D and F above the level of the conduit P. This will form a trap which will hold all of the water in the lateral portion of said conduit and will permit the drainage of Water which is above the level of the partition. Therefore, whenever the valve 1 is opened, there will be a practically instantanfious delivery of water efilgecting a corresponding displacement of 01 In order to obtain the desired relative location of the partition H andthe conduit P, the latter is coupled to a portion Q, the casing which extends downward at one side of the chamber F. This provides full area for the passage of the liquid and at thesame time locating the conduit 1? below thartition H, as above described.
' at I claim as my invention is:
1. A valve comprising a casin formed of a single piece of material having parallel alinement ported partitions divlding the same into inlet and outlet chambers and an intermediate chamber, a delivery connection before extending downward m into the storage tank, on
o at
to said intermediate chamber arranged below the level of the partition separating the same from said outlet chamber, and valves for alternatively closing the ports of said partitions.
2. A valve comprising a casing divided llltl by ported partitionsinto an inlet chamber in its upper portion, an outlet chamber in its lower portion and an intermediate chamber, valves controlling the ports in said partitions,
alternatively seating the same, and a delivery connection for said intermediate chamber means within said valve casing for trapping the liquid in said delivery conduit from draining into said outlet.
t 4. A valve comprising a casing divided by so arated orted partitions into an upper inl et cham er, a lower outlet chamber and an intermediate chamber for connection with a delivery conduit, valves having a common stem for controlling said ported partitions and alternatively seated thereon, and an extension of said intermediate chamber down- I ward below the partition between the same and the outlet chamber to which said deliva common valve'stem for said valves bersand an intermediate chamber, a delivr ery connection to said intermediate chamber arranged below the level of the partition separating the same from said outlet chamber, valves for alternately closing the ports of said partitions, and a common valve stem for said valves.
6. A valve casing formed'of a single piece' of material having horizontally disposed ported partitions dividing the same into inlet and outlet chambers and an intermediate chamber, a delivery connection to said intermediate (hamber below the level of the partition separating the same from said outlet chamber, valves for alternately closing the ports of said partitions, a common valve stem for said valves, and means mounted within said outlet chamber for actuating said valve stem.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
