Description
H. C. MANCHESTER OIL CUP FOR CROSSHEAD GUIDES Filed Jan. 20, 1925 ntented @251. Q,
HENRY C. IPIIANCHESTER, OF SGBANTON, PENNSYLVANIA;
OIL CUTE FOR CROSSHEAD GUIDES.
Application filed January 20, 1923.
Be it known that l, HENRY C. Manonns man, of Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna and State of iennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in tlil Cups for (Jrosshead Guides, of which improvement the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for lubricating the cross heads of steam engines and pumps, and its object is to provide an appliance of simple and inexpensive construction, which shall be readily adaptable for application to a cross head guide of any of the ordinary types, and will wholly eliminate the excessive loss now experienced by the accidental or unauthorized detachment of oil cups of the class which now stand ard.
'lhe improvement claimed is hereinafter fully set forth.
in the accompanying drawing: Figure l is a side view. in elevation, of a cross head guide, illustrating an application of my in rcntion; Fig. 2. a plan or top view of the same. with the cover plates removed; Fig. 3. a partial longitudinal central section, on an enlarged scale; and, Fig. 4, a view, in perspective of a cover plate. detached.
.l'n the practice of my invention, referring dcscriptively to the specific embodiment thereof which is herein exemplified, the detachable oil cup of ordinary practice. is superseded by an open topped oil chamber, '1, which is drilled in the top of an upper cross head guide bar, 2, and is adapted to be filled with waste, curled hair, or other 'iacking suitable for the reception of oil. ;\n inclined oil duct. 3, leads from the bottom of the oil chamber, into an adjacent vertical passage. 4-. which is drilled in the guide bar. Fla-id passage is threaded for the engagement of a pin. 5, having a tapering or conical lower end, and performing the functions of a feeder valve and a cover retaining bolt. The tops of the oil. chamher. 1, and the passage, 4t, are closed by a (:letachable cover plate, 6, which is held in position by the pin, 5, and an oil delivery duct, 7, controlled by said pin, leads from the bottom of the passage. 4, to the bottom face of the guide bar, 2. The cover plate is locked in position by a helical spring, 8,
which surrounds the pin, 5, and bears, at
Serial No. 613,891.
its ends, on the head thereof, and on the cover plate.
in the operation of the appliance, the oil chamber is packed with waste or other suitable material saturated with oil, which is allowed to seep into the feeder pin chambeiyand, by the adjustment of the pin therein, is caused to feed slowly or more freely, as may be desired, directly upon he cross head and guide, thereby providing the necessary lubrication thereof.
As shown in the drawing, the guide bar is provided with two of the appliances above described, that towards the left of the guide serving for the lubrication of the cross head and guide, and that towards the right, feeding into a swab oil pipe, 9.
It will be seen that the improvement effects a substantial saving, in preventing the accidental detachment or theft of a detachable oil cup. and that it is readily applicable, at slight cost, for the full performance of the function thereof.
l claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
11.. The combination, with a cross head guide bar. of an oil chamber, recessed in the top thereof; oil passages, leading therefrom to the bottom of the guide bar, and means for controlling the flow of oil through said passages.
2. The combination, with a cross head guide bar, of an oil chamber, recessedin the top thereof; oil passages, leading therefrom to the bottom of the guide bar; and an adjustable feeder pin, fitted in the guide bar and controlling the flow of oil through said passages.
3. The combination, with a cross head guide bar, of an open topped oil chamber, recessed in the top thereof; a feeder pin. controllin the flow of oil. therefrom to the bottom oi" the guide bar; and a detachable cover plate, closing the top of the oil. chamber. I
4;. The combination, with a cross head guide bar, of an open topped oil chamber, recessed in the top thereof; oil passages leading therefrom to the bottom of the guide bar; a detachable cover plate, closing the top of the oil chamber; and a feeder pin controlling the flow of oil through the oil passaqes, and securing the cover plate in 0 o position.
5. The combination with a cross head pin, fitted adjustably in said passage and guide bar, of an open topped oil chamber, controlling the flow of oil through the de 1'0v recessed in the top thereof; a feeder pin livery duct. passage, formed in the guide bar, adjacent to the oil chamber; an oil duct, leading HENRY C. MANCHESTER from the oil chamber to said passage; a Witnesses: delivery 011 duct leading from said passage B. E. MILLER,
to the bottom of the guide bar; and a feeder H. A. CARPENTER.
