Application filed'lilarch a, 1922. Serial 1%[54'53755 7 To all ta/tam. it may concern Be it known that L'FRANK FELIX Hon- LANin'a ci'tiz'en of the United States, residing at Corpus Christ in the county of Nueces and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improiemen ts in HemstitchingAttach-.
ments tor Seivin Machines, of which the sisting of movable arms, one or more of which inay be brought into operative position for causing a greater or lesser separation or two pieces ot-goods, or of the folds of a hem, to produce heinstitching oi'di'ffer'ent Widths, the said arms being also capable of s\ vi nging entirely outof action to permit oi the device being used inpicoting.
Another -object is to provide such" an attachment Which When applied to the presser toot of a machine, extends to "the rear of the-sameian'd tends to keep all Weight direct l V beneath the presser foot and to prevent the attachment from working off, the layers of goods passing smoothly over and through the device, between a separating loar of even thickness and the mainjbody of the attachment, in perfect alinement and uniform spaced relation, to produce a perfect and regular stitch. v v o A full and complete understanding oi? the invention may be obtained from a consideration of the followingdetailed description taken in connection with the accompanying:
drawing forming a part'of this speci'iication,
it being understood that hile the drawina; shows 'a. practical tormo t' the invention, the latter is not to be confined to'strictcontormift'yjthe re'wfith, but may be changed or modified, so long assuch changes :or modifica tions markno material departure From the salient features thereofas specifically pointe'd'out in the appended claims.
In the dra vvingin Which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several figures;
Figure 1 is a sectional view taken transversely through' thehed plate ot a sewing machine, showing the cloth feeder, presser foot and needle fear": in elevation, the in; proved attachment being applied to, the"v presser'ifoo't.
attachment removed" from the machine "th presser foot being indicated in dotted li n s Figure? is a detailperspective view otthefl; I
Figure 3 is an enlargeddetail sectional view of the device, taken on the line 3-3 of FiQure 2.""
F 4 is a 'similarview, taken onthe line of Figure 2.
the "drawing, there is shown the bed plate lot a sewing nachinewhich is indie save-Aer the structure of anumber of Well known makes of sewing'machines on the market; The bed plate su italoly supported overthe usual meehanism' offth e machine, of Which only the cloth feeder 2 is shown including the actuating bar 3 and crank mo tion for the same. Insuperposedrelation to the clothj feeden': a presser foot"5,'of or: dina ry construction, i s' emplo'yed, the same being carried by the bar 6 mounted; for
clamping actiondin thefhead 7' of the'ma chine arm loc'ated above and in spaced relation to thehed plate l. The needle bar 8 projectsin theusualmanner fromthe lower end of the head 7, and is s'uitably 'mounte'd therein to have the necessaryv'moveinent for imparting reciprocatory'niotionto the needle, allot which forms no part ofthe present invention."
The improved hemstitchi'ng attachment comprises a base plate '10 formed of a strip of thin m'et'al, preferablysteel, and considerably longerethan Wide,' ,.one end of the stri being bent under as] at 111 to lie flat against the loiver face otwhat constitutes the forward end'of the lease plate, fand;thc opposite ,or rear end beingbent upwardly to form anarrOw' tlangel'Qextending en 1 tirely across the same; Adjacent to its front end, the base plate 1s further provided with upstanding sidewalls l3, formedibv provide" V V v v 190 ing o'n[the base plate integral outstanding WlflgS, which are turned upwardly 1n perpen dicular relation'to the base plate andfe'xtend inachine, is provided with. a, set screw .lel-
passing through the same and adapted to extending, bifurcated portion of the pr'esser hind against ,someiportionof the forwardly Y foot 5, the said set screw serving to adjust the base plate forwardly or rearwardly to bring certainparts to be described in proper relation with the machine needle 9.
Threaded. into the base plate at the longi tudinal center line thereof, and adjacent'to the upstanding flange 12 formed at the rear end of the same, is a binding screw 15 trav- --ersing a slot 16 provided longitudinally in a transverse rear bar 17 forming one branch of an adjustable U shaped bracketlS, the said rear bar having its rear edge in contact with the flange 12 throughout the length 7 of the; latter, so, as to prevent any lateral play of the bracket with respect to the base The bracket l8 comprises, in addition to the rear bar 1L7 aifront, cloth-separating bar 19,
arranged parallel to the rear bar'and joined to the same by a connecting bar 20, which is bent intermediate its length to bring the said 7 front bar in a lower plane than the rear bar 17, and slightly below the upper surface ,l igure 2 of the drawing.
of the-base plate,- the rear or inner edge of the separating ba-rl9 being in spaced relation to the front, roundededge of the baseplate, to provide a space 21 for the free passage of the upper layer of cloth in a man ner to beexplained.
At the intersection of the front bar 19 and the separating bar 19, or' to bemoved into an out-of th-eeway position, as illustrated in The separating bar 19 is providedfwith a needle opening 24 for the passage of the needle 9 and connecting with a slot 24; extending to the rear edge of. the bar forthe escape of the thread in a well known manner, as the goods are fed rer-irwardlyby the serrated cloth feeder 2.
The swinging arms 22 are likewise provided 7 with needle openings 25 to be brought into alinement with the aforesaid opening 24c,
and likewise provided with communicating slots 25 tobe alined with the slot 2%, When the arms'are in use, for a like purpose.
The base plate 7 carrying the adjustable bracket 18 may be positioned upon the presser foot'of the machine in a forwarder b ckward direction to bring the needle opening or openings in'proper posit-ion with relation 'tothc needle 9, by means of the set screw 14, which maybe brought to bear at the proper point along the forwardly exending, bifurcated portion of said foot. In "ike manner the opening 24 of the clothvsepa lating bar'l19 may beadjusted laterally by means ofthe'set screw 15, to properly position tlie same for the passage of the swung into alined relation to the bar 19, the perforations 25 will register properly.
In using the device for narrow .hemstitching or for oiceting, the front cloth separating bar alone isutilizcd and when wider hemstit-ching is being done, one or more of the arms 22 may be swung into alinementwith the bar as may be found necessary, it being understood thatjwhile only two of. the,
said arms are illustrated 'inv the drawing, more may be supplied with'the attachment and used,,when extra wide hemstitching; is
desired" The lower layer or strip dof cloth or needle and, of course, when the arms 22 are 7 fabric is placed upon the bed platel in the usual manner, the serrated iipper surface of the feeder 2 coining into contact with the same. The upper layer or strip '2) is placed over the bar 19 together with the-in terposed'arms 22, if the latter are to be used, and the strip 6 is thenpassed downwardly through the slot or space 21, beneath the j'll'QSSel' foot 5, to be held" firmly against the lower strip or layer,-when the said foot is depressed in the usual manner, the feeder then acting to feed bothflstrips in a rearward direction when the machine is operated. The rounded forward edge'of the base plate 10'serves to guide the'up'perlayer beneath the presser without damaging the same, and
the needle passes up and downthrough the more or less spaced layers or material caused bythe interposed bar andarms, the stitches will free themselves from the latter through the respective slots 24-? and 25 as will be seen; i
From the foregoing itlwill be seen that a simple, cheaply manufactured and'efficient hemstitching-attachment for sewing machineshas been provided, which may be easily and quickly applied to; the'presser foot of an ordinarymachine in a manner to avoid obstructing the view of the operator, and that the same may be readily adjust-ed forwardly or backward or in a trans-o verse direction to position the parts properly with relation to the machine needle, and further that bylsimply swinging one or more of the arms into position, hemstitching of different widthsmay be done.
