- c. N. BARTON CUTTING LINK FOR COAL CUTTING CHAINS Filed Dec. 15 1919 B5 I H U, WWW/#1952720,
Patent Oct. 2, 1923.
FF 311E.
CHARLES N. BARTON, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
CUTTING LINK FOR COAL-CUTTING CHAINS.
Application filed December 15, 1919. Serial No. 344,841.
To all whom it may concern Be 1t known that I, CHARLES N. BARTON,
A a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Cutting Links for C oal-Cutting Chains, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cutting links for coal cutting chains, and has for one object to provide new and improved means for locking the cutting bit a into position in the bit carrying link of the chain. Another object is to provide means for locking the bit into position which will be immediately released when the holding pressure is released so that the bit itself may be readily withdrawn. Another object is to provide a single means for selectively tightening up and settin the bit holding wedge or releasing the wedge so as to permit free withdrawal of the bit.
My invention is illustrated more or less diagrammatically in accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sketch of a cutting bit link.
Figure 2 is a sketch along the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a side elevation.
Figure 4 is an end elevation of my improved form of locking wedge.
Like parts are indicated by like characters. 'A is a bit holding link adapted to form a part of a coal cutting chain and will be pivoted in that chain by means of pivots A A which pass through open links of the chain A A. Only occasional links of the chain are adapted to hold the cuttting bit. The other links being merely ordinary block links like the base of the bit holding link al ternating with open side links as shown.
The bit holding link has a hollow block B projecting laterally therefrom made up of a stirrup like part B through which passes the cutting bit B I B is a seat or chamber ad acent'thest1rmp 13 adapted to contain a locking wedge B. This locking wedge B is adapted to engage the under side of the bit B and to be thrust thereagainst by the set screw B as itslides along the floor B. This wedge is held loosely in the socket by a pin lit which is free to, slide in the latteral slots B, but
which holds the wedge against withdrawal from the seat.
The back end of the wedge is provided with an overhanging semicircular flange member C adapted t engage a groove (3 in the (end of the setscrew, the relation of the parts being such that when the set screw is set in the wedge it is moved forward to clamp the bit and when the set screw is rotated in the opposite direction to draw it out, first the pressure on the wedge is released and then the enlarged end of the set screw engages the flange and draws the wedge away from its locking position. This leaves the bit unsupported on its lower side so that it can drop down, be loosely held in the stirrup, and be easier disengaged.
The importance of this, is, that if the wedge is forced into place and then left there, coal dust and the like will be packed in about the wedge looking it in position and then when the operator comes to release the pressure on the wedge in the hope of withdrawal the bit will still be wedged or locked in place, and he will have to knock the bit loose. He would, of course prefer to knock the wedge loose and not knock on the delicate and expensive tempered bit, but the wedge is buried inside the link and the operator can do nothing but try to knock the It will be evident, while I have shown; in
the drawings an operative device, still many changes might be made both in shape and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I wish, therefore, that my drawings be taken in a sense diagrammatically. 7
