a, citizen of the United States, and a resident of the c tyof Newark and ,State ol ,New.Jei'- soy, have invented a, certain new and useful Means for Distorting. Tubes, of which chines, and has for, its object theproduction of efiicient meansfor. forming a'slight, obtuseangle at one end of the tube and sn'nul; taneously expand ng the opposite end thereof, by means of a single, rigid-core andcoil; by means of devices movinglongitudinally of thej tube. further ob ect of theinvent on s the provision of nieans'forbending and eXpan sion of'tubesfol the character described,
singlelin, construction, thoroughly reliable and eflicient in its purpose, positive in opera tlon, easily man pulated andlnexpensive of manufacture.
With these and other'objects in view, to be more fully set forth hereinafter, the invention consists in thenovel construction, combination of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described infthe specification and illustrated in theaccompanying drawings considered together or separately.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receivlng a variety of mechanical expressions, one of which for the purpose of illustrating the invention, is shown in the accompanying drawings.
The invention will be first described in connection with the accompanying drawings illustrating one embodiment of my .invention, wherein similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and then more specificallv defined and indicated in the appended claims.
In the drawings,-' 7
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional viewof an apparatus for carrying out the process, the section being taken on the line 22 of Fig. 2; v
v Fig. 2 is a plan view of a portion of the device; and
Fig. 8 is a side elevation of a tube after,
the bending and expanding operation.
The process may be carried out in any form of machine havin a'reci rocatin 'tool carrying element. f'An ordinary punch press may be employed i i i The reciprocating head 1 01 1101; an appaw ratus is shown. The head carries a SPQClZL j tool having a' portion 2 'a'dapted to enter the tubebefore the latter is expanded, a portion 4; oi greatei chameter nd adapted toexpand the .tube to the 'diam'eter {desirecLI-that is, a

ranged at ani angle to thefplate corres'pjonding. totheiangle to be given the end'of the tube.
vise niembers is a pair of die imeinbersjlQ; each of whichis provided'witha semi oylindrical groove, llfand the-groovesf when the' 'die members are positioned, forni' a cylindricalv b'oreoi a diameter ac'lapted;,. t0 receive the tube to be bent; The lower end of the bore idgiVii the. anglejt whichthe tube is tobe bent; Thefa-nnular space between the boss :9 anfd the wall-1 ofthe'bore is adapted tofl'jre'ceive the end of the't'ube. I
The upper end of the dieis counterbored as at 12, and a split ring 13 is carried inv the counterbore, The bore of the ring 13 is of the ring is chamfered as at 14.
The die is positioned in axial alignment with the special tool carried inthe head 1. A straight section of tubing is placed inthe bore Preferably, the lower end of the tube is beveled as at 15 in'order' that one portion may engage between the boss 9 and, the wall of the die. a t
a The head 1 is moved downward and the equal to that of the die,"and the upper edge portion 2 of the tool enters and expands the continued movement of the head will engage I the shoulder 5 with the top of the tube and r 75 Resting. n the plate,"8, and' b tw V I gitu'dinal movement.
force the latter downward ai'id finish the" bending operation. The ehamfer 14 of the ring 13 Will give a finish to the expanded portionof thetube.
".lVhen the bending and expanding opera 7 Inaccordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, I have described the princi- 15 ple of "my invention together with the apparatus which I now consider to; represent thebest embodiment thereof, but I desire it understood that my invention is not confined to 'the particular form of apparatus herein shown and des ribed, the same being merely r illustrativaand that the invention can be carried out in other ways without departing frpm the spirit of my invention, and, therefore, I claimibroa'dly the rightto employ all equivalent inst'ru 'nentaliti es coining Within the 'scope'of the appended claims, and, by means ofwhich'objects of my invention are attained, andithenewresults accomplished,
. as herein set i tortln as it is obvious that the particular embodiment herein shown and descrlbed is only one of many that canbe em- 7 ployed to attain these objects and accomplish these results.
s Having now described my inventiomiwhat I 7 claim and desire to secure by Letters 7 Patent is 1.- Anapparatus forbendin tubes, which comprises a die member adapted to receive 1 the tube, a rigid, integral core carried in the 'die and at an angle to the major portion of the axis oit the die,,and means movable in this 9th day of May, 1919, p I V ANTHONY vAssELLr" the direction longitudinally of therdie, for moving the tube relatively to the die and 'core to expand the tube andbend one end of the tube to an angle tothe axis of the major portionofthe tube. 2. An apparatus for bending tubes com:
prising separable die members adapted'to be. I V
placed together toforni an angular, tubular chamber," a base plate adaptedto support said die members, said base plate; having a boss which projects into but is spaced from the Walls of said annular chamber formed bythe" die members when" said die 1 members are position-ed ,on said "plate iivis'e members for holding saiddi'e members and said plate rigidly together and a reciprocating plunger adapted to enter a tube to be bent and to force it into saidfehamber and over said boss.
3'. An apparatus for bendingtubes com-V prisings'eparable die inembers adapted to be placed together to form an angularytubular chamber a base plate adapted tosupport and position said die members under the plunger of a press, said base plate having an integral boss which projects into but is spaced from the walls of said angular cham ber formed by the die members when said die members are positioned upon saidplata V vise-members for holding said die members and'said plate rigidly together, anda mov able stepped mandrel adapted to -enter the tube to be bent and toi'orce it into said chamber and over-said boss.
