PEEKSKILL,
NEW YORK.
SPRING STYLUS MOUNTING FOB PHONOGRAFHS.
Application filed July 7,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUS A. BROWN, a native of Austria, and who has applied for citizenship of the United States of America, and a resident of Peekskill, in the county of W'estchester and State. of New York, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Spring Stylus Mountings for Phonographs, of which the-following is a specification.
The object of the present inventionis to provide an improved form of stylus arm mounting for a reproducer, that is constituted by a plate spring doubled sharply on itself at one portion; and a further object is to pro vide such a spring member in which the axis or bend of the structure will 'lie approximately in the plane of the diaphragm.
In the accompanying drawing showing one embodiment of my invention, Fig 1 is a front elevation.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation partly in section.
Fig. 3 is an end elevation.
Figs. 4 and 5 show the spring member detached.
Fig. 6 shows the stylus arm and attached bracket.
Fig. 7 is a partial View enlarged through the spring and stylus arm.
Figs. Sand 9 show slight'modifications of the spring plate.
The reproducer may be of the usual or conventional form, the frame 2 having the usual diaphragm 3 that is located a short distance within the outer plane of the frame. The stylus arm 4 is attached by one end to the diaphragm, and secured at its other end to a bracket 5, having an extension 6 arranged to carry the usual stylus needle 7.
A spring member denoted generally by 8 has two. portionsattached respectively to the bracket 5 and the frame 2. As shown this spring comprises a bottom strip portion 9, and a top strip portion 10' connected by a U-shaped portion 11, integral with both plates, that isgiven a rounded bend so that these plates are slightly spaced apart, see Fig. 7. The upper plate 10 is suitably secured to the bracket 5 as by soldering. and
this plate may have an angular bend 12,
1922. Serial 1%. 573,425;
14, to secure this bottom plate to the frame 2. The upper plate 10 extends longitudinally or in the direction of the frame, andfhas its extremities bent downwardly at 15 and- 16 to engage the flatfaces of the frame at this portion.
These extremities are provlded w1th openings such as slots 17, 18 and.
It will thus be seen that the bracket carrying the stylus arm andneedle are rigidly secured-to the spring plate beyond the bent extensions, while the ends of the extensions This will produce a resllient portion that can vibrate adare securedto the frame.
jacent the bend 11,.wliich is substantially in the plane of the diaphragm 3. By this means the. strain at the connection of the stylus arm with the diaphragm is substantially-perpendicular to the diaphragm and will not tend to loosen the connection with the diaphragm; that is somewhat angular in other constructions and tends to extend thi'sconnection and injure the diaphragm.
In'Fig. 8 I show a slight modification in which the bend corresponding to the bend tionssubstantially parallel, one bar ofthe' strip being secured'to thereproducer frame, the other bar portion being secured to the stylus arm bracket at it'smiddle part, said latter bar having slotsat the end portions,
and screws passed through each said slotted portion into the frame.
2. A stylus arm mounting, comprising a flat'strip of resilient sheet-metal substantially H-shaped, the middle connecting portion being bent to bring the tWo bar portions substantially parallel, one bar of the strip being secured tothe reproducer frame, the other bar portion being secured to the stylus arm bracket at its middle part, said latter her having slots at the end portions, and
screws passed through eachsaid slotted portion into the frame, said bar portion also having a short extension on this free longitudinal edge that is reduced at the middle portion. a
