Description

Oct. 2 1923. 1,469,422 I o. LUSCII-IER I CLOTH TRIMMING DEVICE Filed June 16. 1922 0.5007 [ll/ache?- I 2" (ice, is,
" i v (1L0TH-TPVIM IVICIIAT GDEVICE To (rZZwIwmt'If may conccmri- 1" Be itknown that 1, Oscar Lusorrnn, a
citizen of the United-States America, residing at New London, 1n the county of New.
London and State of Connecticut,-l1ave invented certain new and useful improve- 111811 08111 Clothliamnnng Devices; and I do lereby declare that the following is a .full, clear, conc se, and exact descriptlonqof the invention, such as will enable others skilled in'the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same. v I i This inventlon relates to improvements in cloth trimming cevices for use upon sewing machines, having for an object to provide a novel form of cloth trimming device and holder for the knife or cutting blade thereof capableof being adjusted both horizontally and vertically whereby knife may be properly positioned to cut or trim the cloth before the stitching ofthe same, 7 Another and equally important object of the invention is to provide the blade holder for the device which may be formed in a single casting or similar operation, having a portion of the same shaped to present a slid-- able hanger arm whereby horizontal adjustment of the knife may be effected, while another portion thereof is provided with means for adjusting the knife.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter. In order that the invention and its mode of operation may be readily understood by persons skilled in the art, I have in the accompanying illustrative drawings, and in the detailed following description based H thereon, set out one possible embodiment'of the same.
In these drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation. of the improved trimming device:
Figure 2 is a similar view taken at substantially right angles to the Figure 1; and,
Figure 3 is a detail inperspective ,of the improved knife holder.
Having more particular reference to the drawings, in connection with which like charactersof reference will designate corresponding parts throughout, A represents a.
fragment of the usual head of a sewing machine arm, the same being provided with a depending hanger 1, having a presser foot 2 adjustably connected thereto as at 3, while the reciprocalneedle bar 4 is also received in said head A and is adapted to carry Applicationifiled nine 16, 1922. seriaino'. 568,844; i T
V "on its lower 'end'fa suitable needle A re:-
ciprocal trimmerubar '6 ;is likewise movably mounted in the head'A and hasaright an gularly disposed shoulder 6 formed on its lower end, the purpose of which will behereinafter described. V v ,i v 1 The invention; may be stated to-comprise a holder generally indicatedby theinumeral '7, comprisinga body portion having a right 'angularly disposed longitudinally. slotted hanger arm 8 formed integral with .one end' thereof, said hanger arnl: being substantially right angular in cross sectionin shapesand having an under cutportion 9 therein; One side of the forward endport-ionof the body 7 is provided'with a vertically disposedfseat 10 which'in turn is adapted to, receive the upper or shank portion of a knife or cutting blade ll'therein, said cutting blade having its shank portion bifurcated, as at 12 and adapted to receive securing screws 13 therein, these screws, inturn, being engaged in suitably arranged screw threaded openings formed in the inner side of the seat 10.
Thus, it will be understood that means are provided for securing the knife blade-11 in formed on said lowerend of the trimmer bar.
whereupon a securing screw 14 ispassed through the longitudinally disposed slot in said hanger indicated, for the purpose of convenience by the numeral 15, into engage ment with a screw threaded openingformed in the lower portion of the trimmer bar' 6.
Obviously, by tightening the screw 14, the
hangerarm together with the body portion of the knife holder will'be secured in a horizontally adjusted position. 7
It is to be noted that, the arrangement of the cutting blade or knife 11 is such as to cause disposition of the same forwardly of the needle 5 and in proximity to the forward or free extremity of the pressure foot 2.
Hence, said trimmer knife will function during operation of a machine to trim or cut fabric prior to the stitching of the same by the needle-5. Because of the juxtapositioning of the cutting edge of the knife 11 with relation to the forward or free extremity of thepressure foot 2, it will be likewise under respect to the needle 5 may be varied, such as 7 conditions or preference may dictate.
l urthermoreg to efl'ect vertical "adj ustnient I of the knife ll, the Screws 13 may be loosened and the knife moved either upwardly or downwardly; whereupon said screws may be retightened upon the bifurcated portion 12 of thecutting blade or knife 11.
fDuring operation o-fthe trimmer, it of course will be understood that the reciprocal "trimmerbar 6 will be reciprocated at the 20 rate of speed sutlicient to cause the bevelied 7 cuttingedge ot -the trimmer knife 11. to be -e'ngaged with the fabric in a manner to quickly and evenly sever or trim' the same.
The extent of engagement of the bevelled cutting edge of the knife may as her-embefore stated, be varied by vertical a'd ustn1ent curing screws 13. i V V lManifest-ly the construction shown is capable of considerable modification, and
such modification as is within thcscope of my claim, I consider within the spirit oi my invention. 1
lclaimi A trimmer blade holder coi'l'iprising a substantially right angular body portiomlsaid body portion having a vertical recess formed in one of the side walls thereof adjacent its forward end for ustably receiving a trimmer blade, a right angular-1y disposed hanger arm heingright angular in 01-05mm tion, the lower wall of said hanger arm being formed integral with the upoer face adjacent the rear endof said body portion, one face of the'vertical 'wall of said hanger arm having a longitudinally extending recess therein and the vertical wall of said hanger arm having a longitudinally extendmy; slot therein. r
a In W tness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
