Application filed August 31, 1922. Serial No. 585,458...
This invention relates to an implement de- I signed for use in bending the rubber engaging flange of a fruit jar cover to cause the same to closely engage the ar rubber to exclude air. 3
Another object of the invention istoproride a device of this character which may be easily moved around a jar cover to accomplish the purpose of the invention,.novel means being provided. for'holding the imple ment to its work. 7
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter cescribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, withoutdeparting from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view disclosing a device constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a front elevational view of the same.
Figure 3 is a detail view of the crimping roller.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the device embodies a shank 5. which has one end thereof bifurcated as at 6, to support the crimping roller 7.
This crimping roller is formed with a flange 8 and a crimping surface 9 adapted to be forced into engagement with the flange of'a jar cover to bend the same into close enfollowgagement with the rubber associated therewith.
Secured to the shank 5 is a supporting arm indicatedat lO'which has a right angled portion 11 adapted to contact with the edge of the cover to which the same is applied,
and which in the present showing is indicated at 12 to hold the device to its'work and permit the operator to force the roller into close engagement with the flange 13 of the cover. c
The handle 14 is secured to theshank and enables the operator to properly grip the implement to accomplish the purpose of the invention. V
1 In the use of the device, the implement is positioned in a manner as shown by Figure '1 of the drawlng, whereupon theoperator places his hand overthe' cover and at the same time gripsthe supporting arm, while the other hand of the operator may be used to press the roller into engagement with the flange of the cover. 7 i
W'hat is claimed as new is 1 In a tool of the class described, a shank having a cut out portion formed at one end thereof and having a handle formed at the opposite end thereof, a roller positioned within the cut out portion for contacting with the coverlof a fruit jar, a supporting armv extending laterally from the shank and at rightangles with respect thereto, said supporting, arm having a right angled eX- tremity adapted to engage'the cover under operation, said supporting arm adapted tobe gripped by one hand of the operator to hold the tool'to the cover.
In testimony that. I claim the foregoing my own, I have hereto afliXed my signature in the presence of two witnesses. EVERETT BARD. j
