Be it own that l, CHARLns l1. MAnsH, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Bridgewater, in the county of McCook and State of South Dakota, have invented new and Improved Door-Operating Devices, of
which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improved door operating device therefor, which apparatus is particularly adapted for use in connection with garages, etc.
In connection with garage doors,it is a wellappreciated fact that considerable objection has been noted, incident to the fact that in most structures of this nature, an operator of a'vehicle has been compelled to alight to open the doors, and to subsequently alight after passin through the doors, so as to close the pane s of the same.
Certain structures have been proposed which include a motor for operating the doors in a more or less automatic manner, but these devices for the most part haveproven extremely impractical, incident to the cost of installation and maintenance, aside from the fact, that due to their relatively complicated construction, danger has always existed that the parts would become jammed, or damaged in such a manner that the apparatus would ceaseto function. a
With this in mind my present invention f aims to rovide a door operating device by means ot which an operator will be able to cause an actuation of the parts of the same without alighting from the vehicle which he is operating, and will further operate in such a mer that. upon the approach of the vehicle, the operator may cause the doors to be automatically openfl, these doors be-. ingsubsequentlyclosed after the vehicle has passed through the door-way.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a novel construction of door and operating means thereof, which shall be extremely simple in the arrangement of its parts, so that the same may be installed at an extremely nominal figure, aside from the fact that practically no fear may be felt that the arts will refuse to function.
Still another object of this invention is the provision of a device, of the character stated in which the operating means preferably relies upon the movement or the vehicle to cheat an emanation of the parts thus overcoming the diiliculty incident to the use of an extraneous motor, complication of par s, etc.
Further objects of this invention will become apparent in the annexed specification taken in connection with the drawings, which latter illustrate one practical embodi ment of the same and in which; H

, It will be seen in Figures 1 to a that the reference numeral indicates a surface constituting a drive-way which drive-way has a door frame 11, of any suitable construction extending above its surface. Also a supporting rail 12 extends above the door.- way opening, and is supported by the frame 11, and panels 13 are provided which serve to normally close the door-way opening.
Gontrary to the conventional construction, however, it will be seen that these panels 13 are each preferably-provided with but a single hanger 14, which latter co-operates with a supporting rail 12, thus suspending ealnh panel adjacent its upper and inner. e ge.
lVith, a view of properly supporting the balance of the body, of each panel, it will. be seen, attention being invited to Figure 2, that l preferably employ ll-shaped members 14: for each panel, the body ofthese U- shaped members being rotatably supported 100 by brackets 15 fixed to the frame 11, the arms 16 of these members extending inwardly and having their ends attached to bracket 'll afixed to the inner faces of the till Illll to the position indicated in dotted lines in Figure 3, it being noted that incident to the will move to the extreme position indicated in dotted lines in Figure 3, 1. e., to a position at which the bodies of the panels will extend at right angles to the opening of the door-frame.
Now with a,,vievy of providing means which will serve to eflect this actuation, it will be noted, reference being had to Figures 2 and 5, that each of the members 14 has rigidly attached to its body an arm 18, and to one of these arms, the ends of cables 19 and-20am secured, the second arin having attached to it the enls of cables 21 and 22. A pair of main cables or flexible elements 23 and 24 are-provided, the former having its inner end terminating in the cable 19,
and also having the cable '22 secured in advance of this end portion. Both of the cables or flexible members 19 and 22 pass over suitable pulleys 25, and the said cable 22 as aforestated, is secured to the arm 18 26 and terminates in of the second member 14. The cable or flexible member 24 passes. around a pulley the cable 21 aforemt'ioned, it being noted in this connection that the cable 20 is attached to the body of the cable 24 short of its end portion 21.
Assuming that a pull 1s exerted upon the cable 24: it. will be seen that this will result immediately in the cables 21 and 20 becoming tensioned, and upon this 4 pull be continued it will be obvious that the members 1t and arms carried thereby will be moved to the position indicated in full lines in Figure 5, to the. position indicated in dotted lines in this figure. The movement in an opposite direction on the part of the panels may be subsequently efiected by a pull upon. cause a tension to be imparted to the cable 19 and the cable 20. The pull upon the former will cause themember 14 and the panel carried thereby to he s to its closed position and the pull upon 11: e latter will cause a similar action'on the part of the second panel by virtue of the fact that this cable is connected to the arm 18 of the second member 1d, Finally to provide means which result in the operation aforementioned, it will be noted, attention being invited to Figure 4:, that the cable 24 has its outer end split into two ortions 2d and 2%" these portions exten'ng in opposite directions the cable 23, which will in turn nee les along the drive-way 10 and hem connected Ulhus it will be obvious that a vehicle ma roll up to one or the striker members 2; and engage the same with its forward wheel. This will result in a pull being exerted either upon the cable the vehicle advances the same'will ride over the striker member, pressed to a position at which it will ofier virtually no obstruction of this passage. This pull will cause the operation of the panels aforementioned, and upon the operator reaching the opposite side of the door-way a similar engagement between one of thestriker members of the second set and the front wheel of the vehicle will cause the doors to close again. 1
Obviously numerous modifications of structure might readily be resorted to without in the least depart fiom the spirit of my invention, which I cl as:
