Be it known that I. AI'PUST E. HOEF'I, a citizen of the United States. and residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bands for Film lleels, of which the following is a specitication, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to moving picture film reels and the like, and particularly to a resilient band adapted to be employed in connection with said reels for the purpose of securely holding a tilm in position thereon for covering such film as well as for reinforcing the periphery of the side members of the reel, and the object of the invention is to provide a device or band of the class specified which is simple in construction, etticient in use and constructed as hereinat'ter described and claimed.

The invention is fully disclosed in the lollowing specification, of which the accoun panying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable ret'erence characters in each of the views. and in which I Fig. 1 is a side view of a film reel showing a film mounted thereon with my improved band holding such film in position and part of the construction being broken away;

In Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, I have shown at 5 a film reel of the usual form and construction and comprising disk-shaped side members 0 joined centrally by a hub and bearing portion 7 upon which a moving picture or other film 8 is adaptedto he wound and located between the side disk members 6 of the reel, as clearly shown.

In the practice of my invention, I provide an open or split annular band meniber 9 composed of resilient material, such as spring steel and the like, and the end portions of which are turned inwardly upon the band to forn'i cylindrical or beaded members 10, which facilitate the use of said hand. In practice. the band 9 is adapted to be sprung outwardly and passed over one of Serial No. 560.499.

the disks 6 of the reel and into the space between the separate disks and plaeedupcn thetop of the film 8 wound on said reel in the manner shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, and it will be noted that the transverse dimensions of the band 9 are approximately the same as the distance between the inner faces of the disks 6 of the reel, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and when the band is in use orin place it serves to hold the film 8 in proper position on the reel and to form a protective covering theret'or to prevent or insure against fire to a great extent.

It will also be apparent that by reason of the transverse dimensions of the band 9 the same will serve to reinforce the disk 6, said hand serving to hold said disks in proper position and prevent the crushing or inward binding thereof which is experienced on the handling oi said reels and in shipping the same from place to place and throwing the same about. The cylindri -al or beaded end portions it) serve to prevent the marring of the film 8 and also facilitate the detachment of the band 9 from the reel whenever desired.

In Fig. 4 of the drawing, I have shown a slight modification in which the end portions of the band 9 are overlapped as shown at 11. and one end portion of the band is provided with a cylindrical or beaded member 12, while the other end portion of said band at a predetermined distance from the end thereof is cut out as shown at- 13, and a cylindrical or beaded member 14 is formed from the cut-out portion of the band. Vith this form of construction it will be apparent that the entire exposed surface of the film may be covered with the exception of the cut-out portion 13 of the band thus materi ally reducing the exposed surface over the construction shown in Fig. 1 of the drawmg.

It will be understood that while I have shown the end portions of the band 9 separated in Fig. 3 of the drawing that said end portions will normally abut due to th: tension of said band. and by reason of the resilient qualities of the band the same may be used on films occupying greater or less space on a given reel, and while i have shown certain details of construction for carrying my invention into effect. it will be apparent that I am not necessarily limited to these details, and various changes therein and modifications thereoi may be. made. within the scope tit) of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A band for holding films upon reels, said band being composed of resilient material of approximately the same transverse dimensions as the film employed and substantially circular in form and adapted to be located between the side members of the reel and to serve as an inclosure for the film thereon, the end portions of said band being provided with outwardly turned and exposed beaded members serving as finger pieces, one of said beaded members being located at one end of the band, and the other at a predetermined distance from the other end of the band.

2. A band of the class described composed of a strip of spring metal of approximately the same dimensions throughout and fashioned into approximate cylindrical formation, one end of said band being provided with an outwardly turned projecting member, the other end portion of said band being normally overlapped by the first named end portion of the band, and said last named end portion of the band being provided at a predetermined distance from the first named end portion of the band with an outwardly projecting member.

3. A band of the class described composed of a strip of spring metal of approximately the same dimensions throughout and fashioned into approximate cylindrical formation, one end of said band being provided with an out-\vardlv turned projecting member, the other end portion of said band being normally overlapped by the first named end portion of the band, and said last named end portion of the band being provided at a predetermined distance from the first named end portion of the band with an outwardly projecting member fashioned from the material of said band.

4. A band of the class described composed of a strip of spring metal of approximately the same dimensions throughout and fashioned into approximate cylindrical formation, one end of said band being provided with an outwardly turned projecting member, the other end portion of said band normally overlapped by the end portion of the band, said last named end portion of the band being provided at a predetermined distance from the first named end portion of the band with an outwardly projecting member fashioned from the material of said banal and both of said members forming finger pieces to facilitate the manipulation of said band.
