. Application filedv J'u1y 16, 19720, Serial No. 398,657. Renewed Februar);r 6, 1922.
T 0 all whom t may concern Be it known that I, LUKE Esiins, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coal Harbor, in the county of McLean and State of f North Dakota, have invented new and useful ImprovementsA in Sickle Bars, of which the following is a specification. i j My present 'invention-pertains to sickle bars 'for embodiment in the cutting mechal@ nism of harvesters, binders and the like.' i
Practical experience extending through a period of many years has demonstrated that as a rule sickle bars break at the lastrivet hole of the malleableiron sickle Vbar head or adjacent to the said rivet hole. Experience has'also demonstrated that such breaks are caused by the lifting strain'imposed on the bar incident to operation of the machine, from vibrations aswell from heavy grass or strain presented tothe cutting mechanism. The vibrationsbring about crystallization of the steel and cause the rivets to wear and work loose, andthe break follows."
ThereforeV the object of my invention is the provision of a trussed sickle bar whichby reason oi'l itscharacteristics is not liable to break in practice. y
To the attainment of the foregoing the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described ,and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, hereby made a part hereof:-
Figure l is a front elevation of a sickle bar embodying my invention. i
Figure 2 is a longitudinal central section of a portion of the sickle bar on an enlarged scale drawn on the section line 2-2 of Figure 3. 3 is a plan view of the bar.
t@ Similar numerals of reference designate thickness. and the bar being provided at in- 75 Serial No. 534,594.
corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
My novel sickle bar is formed in one piece of malleable iron or other metal compatible with its purpose, and is peculiar in that it is provi.dedwith an intermediate portion of increased thickness, as indicated by l. One side 2 of the bar is straight, and the other side thereof is bellied as shown to afford the comparatively thick portion. It will also be observed that at the bellied portion side of the bar, the bar is tapered as indicated by 3 toward the end portions 32L of the bar which end portions 3a are straight at their sides opposite to the fiat side 2. At intervals in its length the bar is provided with rivet holes 4 for the connection of knives (not shown) as well as the bar head, (also not shown).
It is to be understood that the comparatively thick portion l oi the bar is to be of such relative size as not to interfere with free play of the bar.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by'Letters-Pat- .65 ent, is :e
As a new article of manufacture, a onepiece sickle bar Hat and straight at one side and havingat its opposite side an intermediate bellied portion, the ends of which are connected by inclinations with. the'end portions oi" the bar; the said end portions being oi one degree of thickness and the intermediate bellied portion of a greater degree of tervals in the comparatively thick portion and the end 4portions with vertically disposed apertures. y
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
LUKE ESKES.
