Be it known that I, JoHN A'. CRIMP, citizen ofthe United States, residing at Ellensburg, in the county of Kittitas and State of lVashington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Methods of Producing Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention contemplates a new and improved method of constructing hand tire pumps or the like, wherein the base is cast about the cylinder' in a manner to pro vide an air tight joint between these parts, and at the same time provide an economical method of building or constructing said pumps.
One of the chief characteristics of the invention resides in making use of a shrink plug which is arranged within the larger' portion of the base, so that the amount of metal surrounding the lower end of the cylinder is more or less uniform, so that the g metal of the base grips the lower end of the cylinder with uniform pressure in a manner to provide a permanent air tight connection.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction, combination,V and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawing forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein Y Figure 1 is a sectional view through the pump cylinder and base.
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view therethrough.
Figure 3 is a detail view of the shrink plug.
Referring to the drawing in detail, 10 indicates the pump cylinder, and l1 the base therefor.
The improved method of building a pump consists in first inserting within the lower end of the pump cylinder 10 a core 15 which is designed to keep the lower end of the pump cylinder slightly iiared as illustrated in Figure 1. This core 15 has :a central depression which communicates with the lateral bore. which bore receives a metallic tube 16, which projects from the bore and through an opening in the cylinder 10 arrangedl in a suitable mold,- and moltenY metal poured in the mold to form the base 11. The shrink plug 14 occupies a position to lill the enlarged portion of the base which is necessary to provide for the hose outlet connection, and consequently, the position of this plug provides for a more or less unii form distribution of the molten metal about the lower end of the cylinder, so that the shrinkage more or less uniform to eii'ectively grip the lower end of the cylinder and provide a permanent air proof connection. It is practically impossible to run liquid metal about cold metal and have it shrink evenly unless the distance on all sides is even, and it is by reason of the use of the shrink plug 14 that such uniform shrinkage about the lower end of the cylinder can be accomplished, and at the same time provide the base of the pump with the necessary enlargement for the hose connection.
The method described also produces a pump which is very strong and durable. The lower end of the cylinder is provided with grooves 15 about the lower e-nd thereof, which grooves are filled with molten metal, thus anchoring the cylinder to the base and preventing the cylinder from moving or slipping up and down.
Ihile it is believed that from the foregoing description. the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described, and that such changes may be rcsortcd to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
What I claim is 1. The herein described method of producing a pump of the character described consisting of arranging a core within the lower end of a pump cylinder, associating a ,metal tube with the core in a manner where- 15 tube with the core with the tube projecting beyond the side of the cylinder, connecting a shrink plug with the exposed end of the tube, said plug constituting the hose Connec tion, providing the cylinder with grooves about the lower end thereof, and thence pouring molten meta-l about the lower end of the cylinder within a mold to form the buse, said metal filling said'groove and surrounding said plug in a manner whereby the metal is more uniformly distributed about the lower end of the cylinder for the purpose specied.
