By utilizing the tops of gear teeth for forming the printing surface, substantial means for imparting rota y movement to the digit wheel i afforded, the form of the cooperating transfer wheel being such as to avoid injury to the printing surface. By using transfer wheels which arealways directly geared "to 'ieir asso'cimed ci i w ieeis a soiu e uniformity in the functioning of the head as a ing transfer wheels with a locking ratchet wheel upon one face thereof and a releasing disl; upon the other face thereof, said di'slr upon a wheel of lower denomination will be presented adjacent the ratchet wheel of the transfer wheel of next higher denomination so that both said ratchet wheel and said releas disk may co-operate with a single pawl havingno small parts thereon.
It is not my intention to limit the invention to the precise details of construction shown in the accompanying drawings, it

Having described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to have protected by Letters Patent, is r 1. A numbering head embodyin therein a sequence of digit wheels each iaving a plurality of gear teeth thereon, the tops of said teeth being formed as a printing surface, and said wheels being independently rotatable about a common axis, and means for progressively actuating said digit wheels comprising. a sequence of transfer wheels independently mounted to rotate about an axis counter to that of said digit wheels,
one transfer wheel being associated with each digit: wheel, and each transfer wheel in ing gear teeth thereon adapted to 'co-operate with the gear teeth upon the digit wheel with which it is associated, one of the teeth of each ofsaid transfer wheels being laterally extended to engage the teeth of the digit wheel of next higher denomination,
and means for actuating the transfer wheel associated with the digit wheel of lowest denomination.

A numbering head embodying therein a sequence of digit wheels each having a plurality of gear teeth thereon, the tops of said teeth being formed as a printing surface, and said wheels being independently rotatabl about a common axis, means for progressively actuating said digit wheels comprising a sequence of transfer wheels each independently mounted to rotate about an axis counter to that of said digit wheels, one transfer wheel being associated with each digit wheel, and each transfer wheel having gear teeth thereon adapted to cooperate with the gear teeth uponthe digit wheel with which it is associated, one of the teeth of each of said transfer wheels being laterally extended to engage the teeth of the digit wheel of next higher denomination, and means for actuating the transfer wheel associated with the digit wheel of lowest denomination, locking means cooperating with each of said transfer wheels excepting the transfer wheel associated with the digit wheel of lowest denomination, whereby it is held against movement, and releasing means carried by each digit wheel of lower denomination operative upon said last named means to release said means and permit the rotation of the transferwheel with which it cooperates and its associated digit wheel when the extended tooth of the wheel carrying said releasing means is in a position to operatively engage said lElSll'IlilIllOtl digit wheel.
