Description
` Carriers,V of
Patented Sept, lill, 'ltl amiral-in E. nar/rica, or cnnsrns, souri-r caserma.
Guarana canaries.
Application filed June 25, 1922. Serial No. 571,693.
To a-ZZ whom-Macy concern: A
Be 1t known that'l, EDWARD E. Laarron,a citizenot theUnited States, and resident ci Chester'. in thecounty o-iC-hester and State.-
oi' South Carolina, have invented certain new ancluseful lmprovementsvin Curtain fication. j My invent-ion relates to curtainV carriers 4tor vehicles provided with tops, and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein describedand claimed.
As fis well known, ftops for automobiles and like vehicles ordinarily include side curtainsdetachably secured at their upper endsto longitudinal bows or associated :trame members ot the body and detachably secured 'at their'lower ends'to the doors ot the automobile at theupper ends or the latter. ln stormy and rainy weather, `it is ordinarily necessary' to detach the side" curtains -from fthe doors when the doors are opened and to again secure the curtains tothe doors whenV the latter are closed. ln consequence,con-
sid-'arable inconvenience, `:labor and VannoyanceV are occasioned by the necessity of repeatedly detaching and attaching the side curtains to the doors of' the vehicles uiniier fr ibi t1 ift" livr un avoia Le nea ier conci `ions. ,rcieoi ci,
the curtains are likely to be torn and ren` dercd unseri'i'ceable or unsightly because of Ythe wear thereon resulting,f from the 'frequent adjustment thereof with respect to the 'support to which attached. Y j. VIt is therefore an object or my invention to provide asimple eiiicientiineans for sup'- porting curtains above the doors of anauto I mobile or? like vehicle so 'that the doorsand the side curtains'can be swung from open toV closed position or vice versa without the necessityot .detaching,T any part ofthe sido curtains trom a support. y
A further object of my invention is to provide a device .oit the character described which is adapted to he operatively applied to aiitomobiles-havilio; tops or conventional or ordinary construction without a change Vin the construction ot the latter' being required.
A still further object of my invention is to provide an attachment or the character described which :incliidesmeans 'for removably supporting a side'curtain in a desired position in respect to a door of an automo! bile'or other vehicle, whereby the Vcurtain so supported-can' be detachedrirom the vewhich the following is a speci-- hicle and folded in lthe usual manner tor storage in a small space when not in use.
A still further object ot my invention is. to provide an attachment et the characterV described which includes means 'for normally holding` a' curtain supported thereon substantially in vertical alignment withv a door with which associated when the latter-is in closed position, and for yieldinply resistingmovement of the curtain from closed to open position.
Other objects and advantages will be ap* parent from the following description. and the novel features of the invention will be particularly outlined inthe appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing', forming a part et this application, in which Figure l is a side elevation ci' an automobile body and top with portions broken away to show a 'practical embodiment or the invention operatively applied thereto,
Figure is an enlarged perspective view ot the attachment applied to the longitudinal bow of an automobile top`r Figure 3 is a view showingin elevation the outer tace or a bracket included in the attachment. Y A
Figure 4 is a side elevation ot a flexible conncctorincluded in the attachment,
Figure'i is a sidefelevation ot: a section otra curtainsupporting member included in the attachment,
- frFigure 6 is view similar to Figure 5 and includes side curtains il adapted to be arranged above the upper ends or doors 4: when the top Q is operatively applied. The doors l are attached to the body by hinges, not shown. to swingi outwardly trom closed toward open positions, as is usual.
An attachment embodyingr the invention in the form now preferred by me, includes a bracket 5 comprising a vertical plate portion or arm 6 adapted to be attached by screws 7 or the like tothe inner side ot a longitudinal bow 8 ot the top 2, or like support. The bracket 54 alsoincludes a hori Zontal plate portion 7 having; on the 'upper face thereof an upstanding stud projection l0. i
A sleeve 11 rotatably fitting thestud 1l) and resting' at one end upon the horiaontal portion ot' the bracket 5 is formed integrally with a rod-like extension or shank l2, which extends at right angles to the axis ot the sleeve 11 and is `thus horizontally disposed Whenpthefsleeve 11 is mounted upon thestud in the manner described. The
bracket 5 is attached to the bow 8 in position Yat to substantially align the stud projection axially with the vertical axis about which the Vdoor 4 swings. iWhen the sidecurtain is attached at Vits lower end to the door l in any suitable known manner, as by means of buttons, the door and the side curtain will swing in unison from closed to open position, or vice versa.` Y
The side curtain 3 is normally maintained in closed position, or in other words in ed fe? wise alinenient with the door 4; when the latter is closed byf means oi a spring' loi which lis connected at its other endy by coil formation which is secured at one end by means or screw 1G to the bow S at an appreciable distance 'from the bracket 5 and means of a flexible connector 17 throuifh screw eye 18 extending` from the juncture ot the' sleeve 11 and shank 12 ait an angle tothe shank 12. The' arrangement is such that swinging movement oit the shank 12 and ot Vtherod 13 and the ycurtain vsi'ippfnted thereon' outwardly about `the axis of the studprojection 10 is yieldingly resisted bythe spring 15.
space. The bi'aclretbniay remain-permavtains 3 the rod 13 is detached from the 7 v i shank 12 and the side curtain may be rolled thereabout'-solas totaire up but little nently attached to the bow 8 and the "11 and associfdedparts may be lett in applied position whejn theside curtains 3 are not in use without detrimentally afectinf';
terferingl with freedom of movement within the automobile. i
Obviously, my invention. is susceptible of embodiment in forms other than that illus-V trated in the accoinpanying drawings, and l therefore consider as own all medidotions 01'?A the forni oi the device herein closed,V which fairly fall within the scope ot the appended claim.v i
l claim An atta chmentoi the character described 4m the appearance of the top'or in any way inV so 'Y comprising` abracket having a vertical pori tion adapted forgattachment toV a lixed part ot' a vehicle top and al horizontal portion having an opstanding stud projection there on, a slecvero'tatably mounted upon the upstandingr projieetion and having' a horizontal shank extendingtherefrom, a stiffening' rod having; a socket or bore adapted to slidably receive said shank Vsaid rod .being adapted to support aside curtain of avehicle topbat the upper end of the latter,;and spring' moans arranged between the sleeve andthe lined part of 4the vehicle top'for yieldinqlv resisting* rotation of the sleeve in apdirection outwardly from the bodv of the. vehicle about the axis theupstanding"projection and fortending to cause rotation of the Sleeve in a direction inwardly ot the vehicle body,
