To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, MATTHEW S. CUM- Nn'n, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, county and State of New York, and FREDERICK \V. GErssnN- HAINER, a citizen of the United States, and
a resident of Freehold, Monmouth County,
and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vheel-Trimming Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in a trimming device for a inding wheel and is particularly adapted or use in trimming a grinding wheel used in making mas-- r tools slidably mounted and angularly adjustable for obtaining variable angle therebetween and independently operable to permit operation thereof from a common control member to accurately trim a grinding wheel surface to form a definite angle.
' A further object is to provide a simple construction in a device of this character which will permit a relatively wide range of angular adjustment of the cutter slides with relation to each other without interfering with the common control handle or other connections. For this purpose each I cutter slide is carried in an independent housing on a support 'sliably mounted on a semi-circular-lik e track having its vertical axis normal to the axis of the grinder, and by having the .cutter slides function independently by a common control member comprising a pivoted feed arm cam having two eccentric slots therein, each guide carrying a pin to move an arm pivoted at one end and slidably engaging a slot in one end of each of the respective cutter slides.
Still another object is to provide a trimming device independently and angularly adjustable with reference to a grinding wheel above a horizontal axis normal thereto.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character in which the trimmers may function when the grinding wheel is e ther in an operative or inoperative position, and further to provide a mounting which permits the grinder to be moved from anoperative position to an inoperative poslt on wlthout interfering with any other ad ustment or parts. This is accomplished by having the trimming device adjustably earned on a base, rotatively mounted, which also supports the grinding wheel.

In Figure 1 a master thread gage l is shown rotatably supported between the center 2 and the dead center 3 carried by the tail stock 4 mounted on the base 5 of the machine. A. bed 6 is carried on the base 5 and is moved longitudinally thereof by suitable means not shown, on guider 7 and bearing faces 8. Slot-ted grooves 9 are pro vided on the bed 6 to engage adjusting nuts and bolts 10, which positions a table 11 on the bed and permits adjustment longitudinally of the bed. A screw 12 threaded in the table 11 is provided with a handle 13, a graduated scale 14 and a shoulder 15 at one end thereof, said screw operating to move a slide carriage 16 on a guide 17 laterally of the table 11 on which is adjustably fixed a grinder holder rest 18, longitudinally adjustable on track 19 by a screw 19'. The upper surface of the rest 18 forms part of a circle having its axis normal to that of the grinder axis and has a raised guide 20 which fits a slot 21 on the under side of a grinder holder 22 which also has a surface slidably engaging the remaining portion of the circle. A bolt 23 passes through the rest 18 and engages the holder 22 to keep it positioned. A. bracket 23 extends from one side of grinder holder 22 and rotatably carries the grinder 24 on the shaft 25 in the bearing 26, said grinder 24 being driven by a suitable power means through a pulley 27. A trimmer leaf- 28 s carried by the grinder holder 22 and 1s pivotally carried at the pin 29 on a bracket arm 30 which in turn is carried by the grinder holder 22 in an are shaped groove 22' by means of a screw 73 and a holding wedge shaped piece 74 engaging the threaded end of the screw 73 and adapted to slide in the groove 22'. This construction permits the trimming points to be adjusted angularly about an axis normal to the work, independently of the grinder. Thus either the trimmer and the grinder may be angularly adjusted about an axis as a unit, or the trimmers may be so adjusted mdependently of the grinder and the work, the lower face of the trimmer leaf has a curved contour to rest on the corresponding upper surface of the grinder holder 22. A trimmer carrier 31 is slidably carried in a groove 32 in the leaf 28 which guides a tongue 33 of the carrier 31. A collar 34 carried by the leaf 28 guides a screw 35, having a head 35' in a threaded hole 36 in the trimmer carrier 31 to move same radially of the grinder in the tongue and roove connections 32, 33. Rigid with the trimmer carrier 31 are two posts 37, 38 and a bracket arm 39. Pivotally supported upon the posts 37 38 are the arms 40 and 41 respectively; pivotally supported at the point 46 of the bracket arm 39 are cam plate 42 with its handle 44 and the corresponding cam late 43 with its handle 45. The two cam plates 42, 43 have the same shape and are mounted one over the other but the topplate has an eccentric slot 47 therein which guides a. pin 48, said pin bein carried by the arm 40; the bottom cam p ate has an oppositely disposed eccentric slot 49 therein which guides a pin 50 carried by the other arm 41. On the upper side of the trimmercarrier 31 is a semi-circular guide 51 having a groove 52 therein, the axis-of the semicircular guide 51 being normal to the axis of the grinder 24. Trimmer supports 53, 54 each having a recess 55 in the bottom thereof are guided on the cove 52 and are adjustably secured in position by screws 56 and nuts 57 which are guided in the groove 52. On the trimmer supports 53, 54 are carried the trimmer bar guides 58, 59, respectively, in which trimmer bars 60, 61 are slidably carried. Each bar is secured in its guide by a set screw a'i'l'i'ich is carried by the guide bar and which enters a oove 63 in each trimmer bar. Cutting points 64, 65, such as diamonds, are carried atone end of each of the bars 60, 61, by ofi'set arms 66, 67, respectively, in such a manner that the points will be in salinement, one on each side of the grinder. It is thus seen that while the trimmer bars are in different horizontal planes, the trimming points are in one plane. In the opposite end of each trimmer bar 60, 61 is a slot 68, 69 which slidably receives one end of each of the arms 40, 41, respectively, so that either one of the trimmer bars may be independently successively moved to a functioning operative position by turning the handle 44 first in one direction and then in the opposite direction around the pivot point 46. F or example, if it is desired to move the trimming point to an operative osition, the handle 44 is turned to the eft or clockwise, which will move the arm 41, pivoted on post 37, through the action of the pin 48 carried by arm 40 and guided in the eccentric slot 47 in the cam plate 42, the trimmer bar 61 will then be moved in its guide 59 to functioning position. It is apparent that both the trimmers may be moved nearer the grinder by turning the screw head 35' which will slide the trimmer carrier 31 as a unit in the desired direction. lit is to be noted that the above arrangement is an extremely simple one for moving the trimmers by acommon control member and this without a complicated lever connection. Suitable caps and dust protectors are furnished at 70 at each end of the guide bars 58, 59.
U11 the inder holder rest 18 are suitable graduations 71 to cooperate with a guiding mark 72 on the guider holder 22 to facilitate the adjustment of these parts. The trimmers move with the grinder and maintain the same relative position thereto. if it is desired to move the grinder to and from thework the handle 13 actuates the screw 12 to move the slide carriage 16 laterally of the work. Provision is also made for moving the grinder from an operative position to an inoperative without changing the adjustment of the parts by rotating the trimmer leaf 28 about the pivot point 29.
Another very desirable feature of the above flexible arrangement is that the grinder may be trimmed either in a functioning or non-functioning position.

taneously by properly positioning the trimmer points and actuating the handle 44. When the handle is reciprocated each trimmer will function simultaneously on different surfaces of the grinder and will move in opposite directions in so doing.
The invention upon which this application is based is broader than the specific form of mechanism which has been shown and described for the purpose of illustrating the invention and we thereforeintend no limitations other than those imposed by the appended claims. \Vhat we claim is:
1. In a wheel trimming device, a plurality of dressing tools angularly disposed with relation to each other and movable in intersecting paths, and common control means manually operated for simultaneously actuating said dressing tools in opposite directions with reference to each other.
2. In a wheel trimming device for a grinding wheel, a pair of trimmer bars angularly arranged, a point for each bar, and common control means for actuating said bars simultaneously in opposite directions with reference to each other, said points being movable through intersecting paths.
3. In a wheel trimming device for a grinding wheel, a pair of trimmer bars angularly arranged, a point for each bar, common control means for actuating said bars simultaneously in opposite directions.

4. A trimming device for a grinding wheel comprising a plurality of trimmer bars angularly disposed in different planes, guides for said bars, means to permit independent angular adjustment of said guidesv in a plane normal to the plane of the grinding wheel, said means including a groove for positioning said guides, said groove forming the are of a circle having its axis normal to and in line with the center of the grinding wheel.
6. A trimming device for a grinding wheel comprising a plurality of trimmer bars angularly disposed, independently movable guides therefor, a control means for simultaneously actuating said bars, and a pivoted base for said grinding 'wheel and said trimmer bars.

A trimming device for a grinding wheel comprising a plurality of trimmer bars angularly disposed, independently movable guides therefor, a control means for simultaneously actuating said bars, a pivoted base for said grinding wheel and said trimmer bars, and means to permit angular adjustment of said grinding wheel and trimmer with reference to the work.

A. trimming device for a grinding Wheel comprising aplurality of trimmer to a functionin bars angularly disposed, independently movable guides therefor, a control means for simultaneously actuating said bars, a pivoted base for said grinding wheel and said trimmer bars, and means to permit angular adjustment of said grinding wheel and trimmer with reference to the work, said means including a support for said base, said support forming an arc of a circle having its axis substantially coincident with the plane of the grinding wheel.
9. A trimming device for a grinding wheel comprising trimmer bars angularly disposed in different planes, independently adjustable guides therefor, a common control means for successively actuating said bars to slide within said guides to be moved position. v

A trimming device for a grinding wheel comprising trimmer bars angularly disposed in different planes, independently adjustable guides therefor, a commtiiiacontrol means for successively actuatii ig' said bars to slide within said guides to be moved to a functioning position, said means including a pivoted arm, said arm being in sliding engagement with one of said bars to move it in either direction, a pivoted plate having an eccentric slot therein and a pin carried by said arm and guided in said slot.
11. In a trimming device for a grinding wheel, a. plurality of trimmer bars angularly disposed in different planes, independently slidable guides therefor, and means for simultaneously actuating said trimmer bars in opposite directions relative to each other.

In a trimming device for a grinding wheel, a plurality of trimmer bars angularly disposed in different planes, independently slidable guides therefor, a means for simultaneously actuating said trimmer bars in opposite directions relative to each other, said means including a pivoted plate, a handletherefor; oppositely disposed eccentric slots therein, pivoted arm members slidingly engaging the end of the trimmer bars, and a sliding connection between said arm members and said slots so that when said plate is moved the trimmer bars are moved in relatively opposite directions.
13. In a trimming device for a grinding wheel, a plurality of trimmer bars angularly disposed in different planes, independently slidable guides therefor, a means for simultaneously actuating said trimmer bars -in opposite directions relative to each other,
a groove for said guide forming part of the are of a circle having its axis normally in alinement with the plane of the grinding wheel, a pivoted arm slidingly engaging one end of each of the trimmer bars said arm also forming part of the arc of a circle having its axis in alinement with the plane of the grinding wheel so that the guides may be independently moved without disturbing the connection between the guide and arm.

In a trimming device for a grinding wheel, a plurality of trimmer bars angularly disposed in different planes, independently slidable guides therefor, means for simultaneously actuating said trimmer bars in opposite directions relative to'each other, and a base carrying said grinding wheel and the trimmer bars, said base being pivoted to permit the grinding wheel to be moved to or from the operative position without disturbing the relative adjustment of the parts.
15. In a trimming device for a grinding wheel, trimmer bars angularly disposed, guides therefor, and common control means therefor independent of the grinding wheel and adapted to alternately position the bars in operative relation to the wheel.
16. In a trimming device for a grinding wheel, trimmer bars angularly arranged, guides therefor, 21 common control means for said bars independent of the grinding wheel,
- and a means arranged to permit thewheel to be trimmed either in a functioning or non-functioning position.
17. In a device of the character described for trimming a cutting tool, trimmer bars and guides therefor through which said bars operate and mechanism for causing said bars to operate on opposite sides of the cutting tool and in opposite directions relative to each other from common control means either successively or simultaneously.
18. In a device of the character described.
for trimming a cutting tool, comprising trimmer bars and guides therefor, a mechanism for actuating said trimmer bars to function on opposite sides of the cutting tool from a common control means either successively or simultaneously, said mechanism including a pivoted arm in sl1d1ng connection with said trimmenbarg-and a,
means for independently changing the angularity of either one of the trimmer bars relative to the cutter and to each other.
20. A trimming device for a tool comprising a plurality of trimmer .bars angularly disposed in difierent planes and movable in opposite directions with reference to each other, guides therefor, a support for said guides, means to move said support radially of the tool and means for adjusting saidsupport about an axis normal to the axis of the tool.

A trimming device for a tool comprising a plurality of trimmer bars angularl'y disposed in different planes, guides therefor, a support for said guides, means to move said support radially of the tool, and means carrying said support and arranged to permit the movement thereofindependent of the tool around an axi normal to the axis of the grinder.
22. A trimming device for a tool comprising a plurality of trimmer bars angularly disposed in different planes, guides therefor, a support for said guides, a bracket pivoted at one end of said support, a holder for said bracket, said bracket and holder having a connection therebe'tween arranged to permit movement of said bracket around anaxis normal to the axis of the grinder.
23. A trimming device for a tool comprising a plurality of trimmer bars angularly disposed in different planes, guides therefor, a sup-port for said guides, a bracke't pivoted at one end of said support, a
holder for said bracket, said bracket and holder having a connection therebetween arranged to permit movement of said bracket around an axis normal to the axis of the grinder, said connection including a groove forming .an arc of a circle having its axis substantially normal to that of the grinder.
